STUDY GUIDE FOR MODULE NO. 3

INTRODUCTION
MODULE OVERVIEW

This module exemplified content knowledge and application of the concepts, principles, methods, and
strategies of remedial instruction.

MODULE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In this module, challenge yourself to:


1.Recognize frameworks and theories regarding the contents, form, and steps in preparation of an English
Proficiency Test (EPT);
2.Integrate competencies in the K-12 English Curriculum in preparing a proposal for EPT
3.Analyze a given EPT whether it conforms to the frameworks and theories discussed; and
4.Create an EPT proposal based on the frameworks and theories discussed.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TEST

The English proficiency test is a test which is often conducted to determine the general English proficiency of
an individual. This test is an essential requirement for any international student seeking admission into any
college or university in the Philippines.
English proficiency test Philippines will test the use of English of an individual including speaking, writing,
listening, and reading. However, so as to get true and accurate results, it is important to make use of testing
materials that are reliable and of high quality.

An English Proficiency Test (EPT) shall be administered to teacher applicants by the Bureau of Education
Assessment (BEA). The respective Division Testing Coordinators shall coordinate with BEA regarding the
conduct and schedule of the exam in their division, which should be within February to March.
DepEd Order No. 7, s. 2015 (Hiring Guidelines for Teacher I Positions)
The total percentage score obtained by an applicant shall be multiplied by the weight of fifteen (15) points, as
follows:
Percentage Score = 98% or .098
Weighted Points = 15
Rating – .98 x 15 = 14.7 points

English Communication Skills – 10 points for applicants of the ACADEMIC track and CORE SUBJECTS; and
5 points for the TVL, ARTS, and DESIGN, and SPORTS tracks subjects

English communication skills will be measured through the English Proficiency Test (EPT) which shall be
administered to applicants by the Bureau of Education Assessment (BEA). The respective Division Testing
Coordinators shall coordinate with BEA regarding the conduct and schedule of the exam in their division, which
should ideally be within December to January.

Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or Cambridge English: Proficiency is an English language


qualification, offered by Cambridge English Language Assessment, to show achievement of an extremely high
level of English. The CPE test began in 1913 and was the first English as a Foreign Language qualification to
be provided by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES).

The Cambridge English Proficiency proves that a candidate is fluent in English and can read, speak, listen and
communicate in English speaking environment. The test is set at Level C2 of the Common European Framework

of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Referring to this level means a candidate can:
Have good knowledge of the language to read and interpret academic material of more advanced than the
average speaker, including PG and PhD programmes
Discuss, negotiate and persuade efficiently at senior management level in international businesses
Converse about complex or sensitive issues
Jot down confidently on any subject.
CPE is acknowledged and accepted around the globe by many corporate and educational institutions as
evidence that a candidate has become proficient in English to an exceptional degree.

The CPE exam consists of four papers, which tests the 4 language skills- Listening, Reading, Writing, Use of
English, and Speaking.

SUMMARY

PROFICIENCY is the state or quality of being proficient; skill; competence. Being proficient is being competent
to a specific field. English language has been the lingua franca and is widely used up to now. Doors of
opportunity and success are widely open to those who are proficient in speaking the language. In fact, some
people even enroll themselves to a special class to improve their English proficiency. With this, we must make
reforms and adjustments on how the English language will be prioritized in schools, as part of our drive for
global competitiveness.
