Introduction to civil engineering drawing

Civil engineering drawings are technical civil language drawings that show the information
regarding construction buildings and the land with the site details. Civil engineering drawings
help us understand the images of construction projects and a better way of construction. These
drawings will help us understand the concept and technical visualization of the actual
construction of the structure beforehand.
They provide the information about specific data like work plan, foundation plan, column and
plinth beam, and excavation detail to Engineers and workmen at the site to construct as per the
drawings. These designs are presented in ARCHIcad, Autocad, STAD PRO, E-tabs, Revit, etc.

Following are the vital concepts of civil engineering drawings:

Architectural Drawings
An architectural drawing shows the overall view of the building, including rooms, elevations and
square footage. Some architectural drawings also include furniture and other detailed
information. They usually communicate many technical elements of a building. Architectural
drawings are used by engineers and architects to communicate to contractors who are all
involved in the construction of a commercial or residential project.

Architectural drawing is prepared by architects taking under consideration the requirements of a

client it will contain how a building is oriented, what will be the size of building, height of
building, number of floors as per client requirement or we can say architectural drawing shows
roughly how a structure will look like, it provides information to structural designer on the basis
of which further process will continue.

It follows sets of convention and requires skill to prepare a drawing which represents the
structure from various views such as front view, side view, back view all comes under section
view, and also contains top view, bottom view, which comes under plan.

It include the following

1. The layout plan

A plan diagram is the basic architectural diagram. Also known as the floor plan, this drawing
shows a scaled version of the building as a vertical orthographic projection. It represents the
boundary of construction and all the project details, as seen on the ground. It’s the most
important element that is necessary during setting out.
2. Section plan:
Section plan is a cut cross-section of the building which shows the internal properties of the
structure. It assumes as a finished building is cut vertically cross-section. General convincible
details like the slab ,window and door levels etc. are shown here.

3. Elevations –The  entire side of a building, from ground level to the roofline, as viewed
perpendicular to the walls on that side of the building. Front, rear, and sides of a project are
usually shown. design elements, materials and colors to be used on exterior finishes, roof top or
other exterior mechanical and HVAC units are visible from here.
 Structural Drawings
These drawings are used to more clearly define the structural materials used to support a
structure. Contractors must know the correct materials, placement, grade and reinforcement plan
to maintain a safe and legal building site. They include Beams, Columns and Foundation Details.
The column is the vertical structural member design that carries load mainly in compression.
Beam equally shows the horizontal reinforcement details. The drawings contain all the
information in detail regarding size of structural elements, it’s reinforcement detail, and almost
everything that is required to complete the construction. Structural drawing deals with the load

bearing members, and it doesn’t have any connection related to non-load bearing members, and
to prepare structural drawing skill set is necessary which is possessed by structural engineers,

Following are the points regarding structural engineering drawing-:

·   It provides the size of each and every structural element of structure and also the materials to
be used to construct the structure.
·   It provides the reinforcement details of every structural element.
·   It provides the foundation depth, i.e., at what depth from ground level foundation will be
placed.
·   It also provides the detail regarding the development length, soil bearing capacity, and all
other minor details regarding finishing, flooring etc.

Further structural drawing can be divided into its components- general notes, plan, section,
elevation and details,

· General notes include all the bylaws and codes which has been followed while designing
building, loading which has been taken, and other minor things.

·   Plan gives the detail about the floor, roof slab and other structural elements that comes in it.

·  Elevation gives the view of exterior walls of the building and height of building can be worked
out using it, also it contains all the structural elements that does not comes in plain view.

· Section contains those elements in plain view which can’t be seen in plain drawings.

 Drawings of Water Supply and Drainage connections of building:
The water supply and drainage arrangements in the building are essential for their correct
installation, operation, and efficient function.
Plumbing and sanitary system of pipes fixtures appliances for providing water supply and
drainage to the building.

Electrical, fittings, HVAC, Finishing drawings.

These detailed drawings are used to explain in finer detail the location of different materials used
in construction. Convenient drawing templates help civil engineers quickly create plumbing and
electrical diagrams that follow code requirements and communicate to subcontractors the proper
installation of these materials. The finished drawing details the drywall, hardwood, tile, granite
and other materials used to finish surfaces. This drawing captures the interior and exterior design
of the building. Once you’re ready to tackle a civil drawing for yourself, shop for drafting

Some of the conventional Signs and Symbol of Civil Engineering:
Conventional signs and symbols of civil engineering drawings are employed to represent
particular item like stone, brick masonry, sanitary fixture, electrical installation.
