DISCUSSION
An electric motor is any device that converts electricity into motion or electrical
energy into mechanical energy. They operate based on the principles of
electromagnetism, which demonstrate that a force is applied when an electric current
passes through a magnetic field. This force induces a torque on a coil of wire within a
magnetic field, causing the motor to spin and perform useful work. Numerous
applications employ motors, including fans, power tools, appliances, electric vehicles,
and hybrid cars.
AC motor and DC motor are the two primary motor types. There are several
distinctions between AC and DC motors. Alternating current in the case of AC motors
and direct current in the case of DC motors is the most obvious distinction between the
two types of motors. DC motors are prized for their speed control and output range,
whereas AC motors are renowned for their increased power output and efficiency. AC
motors can be either single- or three-phase, whereas DC motors are always single-
phase.
Energy Efficiency of Electric Motors on the Farm
A motor's efficiency depends on how well it converts electrical power into
mechanical work. Efficient electric motors have excellent starting and running
performance and a high level of dependability. The efficiency of an electric motor is
calculated numerically as the ratio of the output power of the motor shaft to the
electrical power required to turn the motor shaft and can be calculated using wattage
or horsepower values.
Motor Maintenance
– Prevent dust and dirt from accumulating on the motor enclosure, as this will act as
insulation and cause the motor to run at a higher temperature. Over time, this can
cause the insulation within the motor to deteriorate and the motor to fail prematurely.
Higher operating temperatures reduce the efficiency of motors.
– Check for air exhaust from motor fans or cooling vents. If the airflow is obstructed,
clean the openings.
– Apply lubricant to motor bearings as directed by the manufacturer. To prevent excess
lubrication from attracting dust and dirt, do not lubricate.
– Ensure proper motor shaft alignment; misalignment with the driven device can
shorten the bearing life of the motor.
– Correct belt tension – loose belts will slip, reducing power transfer and belt life; over-
tightened belts increase motor bearing loads and decrease bearing life. Fans and other
devices that utilize belts can be purchased with self-tightening mechanisms to minimize
power loss.
– Replace safety guards to safeguard yourself, your family, your guests, your
employees, and your livestock.
