LESSON NOTES

BRANCHES OF BOTANY

Dendrology (study of trees)

the science and study of woody plants (trees, shrubs, and lianas), specifically, their
taxonomic classifications. Simple Meaning: Dendrology is the study of trees.

Topic 2 1
Plant Pathology (pathogens)
Plant pathology is a branch of biology that focuses on understanding the origins of
plant diseases, how they spread through populations and individual plants, and how
to manage or prevent them.

Phytochemisty (chemisty)

The study of plants' chemical production, especially their secondary metabolites, is

known as phytochemistry. Herbivores, insects, pests, various microbes, ultraviolet
radiation, and environmental threats are just a few of the dangers that plants use
these chemicals to protect themselves from.

Plant Geography (origin & geography)

The study of spatial distributions of plants and vegetation and the ecological
relationships that may influence these distributions in terms of their origin, dispersal,
and evolution on the Earth’s surface.

Plant Morphology (external appearance)

Topic 2 2
The study of the size, shape, and structure of animals, plants, and microorganisms
and of the relationships of their constituent parts. The external appearance or
features such as color, shape, size, rigidity, and other physical properties are also
studied in morphology. That branch of which is based upon the external form and
structure of plants is called External Morphology.

Plant Anatomy (internal appearance)

Study of the tissues and cell structure of plant organs. As a part of botany (the study
of plants), it focuses on the internal systems that make up a plant

Plant Ecology (ecosystem)

Plant ecology examines the relationships of plants with the physical and biotic
environment. Plants, as sessile and photosynthetic organisms, must attain their
light, water and nutrient resources directly from the environment. Light is their
source of energy and it is unidirectional in origin.

Horticulture (garden crops & garden management)

The branch of plant agriculture dealing with garden crops, generally fruits,
vegetables and ornamental plants. As a general term, it covers all forms of garden
management, but in ordinary use it refers to intensive commercial production.

Pomology (fruits)
The science of fruits; a treatise on fruits; the cultivation of fruits and fruit trees.

Taxonomy (classification of plants)

Plant taxonomy, including carnivorous plant taxonomy, is the science that identifies
plant characteristics, classifies those characteristics, and ultimately describes them
via a name.

Archeobotany (archeology & fossils & pipols)

The study of ancient plant fossils where people utilized plants in the past by
researching archaeobotanical remains: for food, fuel, medicine, symbolic or ritual
reasons, or for construction and crafts. These plant fossils can also be used to
recreate ancient vegetation and how humans interacted with their environment.

Bryology (mosses & bryophytes)

The study of ancient plants, like mosses, that grow in moist, humid environments

Topic 2 3
Physiology (functions)
The study of plant function and behavior, encompassing all the dynamic processes
of growth, metabolism, reproduction, defense, and communication that account for
plants being alive

Astrobotany (space + plants)

Astrobotany is the study of plants in conditions similar to those found in outer space.
This new research domain contributes to our understanding of life on other planets.

Agronomy (crops)
Agronomy is the study of crop genetics/physiology, crop management, and the
environment in which they are grown, including soils. There are some basic physical
requirements inherent in a crop's genetics and basic physiology that must be
understood about individual crops in order for them to be grown in productive areas.

Embryology (embryo & gametes)

Plant embryology is a branch of biology that associates with the formation,

strucutre, growth, and devolopment of embryos that are made through male and
female gametes

Plant Genetics (genetics)

study of genes in plants

Plant genetics
is the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity specifically in plants. It
deals with heredity in plants, specifically mechanisms of hereditary transmission
and variation of inherited characteristics.

Systematics (plants and evolution)

Plant Systematics deals with the relationship between plants and their evolution.

Forestry (management of forest)

Forestry is the science or practice of planting, managing, and caring for forests.

Agriculture (cultivation of crops)

The science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of
crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products.

Topic 2 4
Ethnobotany (acient people w/ plants & region)

study of a region’s plants

a group or region who is using a plant for specific activities

Plant Paleobotany (paleolithic plants / pre-historic)

The scientific study of prehistoric plants, known as paleobotany, makes use of plant
fossils preserved in sedimentary rocks. Such fossils can indeed be "petrified"
materials, like wood, which retain the underlying plant material in rocklike form, or
imprints or compressions of the plants that were left on the surface of the rock.
