Learning Competencies
Objectives
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Let’s Recall
You have learned that verb is a word that tells actions and it must
agree with the subject in a sentence. Singular subjects take the -s form of the
verb while plural subjects take the base form of the verb.
Let’s see if you still remember the subject-verb agreement. Read each
sentence below, and then underline the correct verb for each sentence.
Let’s Understand
There are three simple tenses of verb. These are present, past, and future.
“Verbal aspect” refers to the timing of the verb. It addresses whether the action occurs
in a single block of time, continuously, or repetitively. All verbs have both tense and
aspect. Verbal aspect consists of simple, progressive, and perfect.
You use the simple present tense of the verb to tell about something thatis always
true or about an action that happens again and again.
PATTERN: verb + s/es
It is used for the following:
2
c. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
A regular verb forms its past by adding -d or -ed to the base form. If the verb
ends in -y and a consonant comes first (try, fry, empty, etc.), change -y to -i and add -ed
(tried, fried, emptied, etc.). In other verbs, the final consonant is doubled before adding -
d or -ed.
An irregular verb forms its past by changing some vowels in the word or by
completely changing the word.
