Values Integration Acids play significant roles within the human body. The presence of
hydrochloride acid in the stomach helps digestion by breaking down large and
complex food molecules. Amino acids are required for protein synthesis
which helps to grow and repair body tissues.

EXPLAIN Acids and bases are essential components of

many industries. They bare used to make
fertilizer, cleaning supplies in research, nuclear
waste storage and other numerous applications.
When using these substances care and safety
must be first in mind. Most acids and bases in
concentrated form are corrosive fruits you love
to eat contains acid that give them their
characteristics flavor for example. Citric acid

gives the sour taste of orange, calamansi and

other citric fruits, malic acid is found in applies
and tartaric acid in tamarind or sampaloc lactic
acid is found in milk. What is these in solution
that make them taste sour or bitter? Here is the
theory that explains this. It is called Arrhenius
Theory of Ionization according to this theory
compounds becomes ions or charges particles in
solution. You will learn more about this

What
is

compound to acids or bases in solution as shown

in the given equation acids are form hydrogen
ion (H+) and bases form hydroxide ions (OH3)
now what happens when an acid and a base are
put together?
Neutralization look at the equation below
illustrate what happens when an acid and a base
are put together. Recall the previous equations.

When an acid and bases are put together , the H+

from the acid and the OH-1 from the base to
form water. Water is neutral substance. Hence
the process is called neutralization. After the
union of H+ and OH-1 what remains in the
solution is a salt in solution and larger salt and
water are both neutral substances.
An acids form H+ ion solution. A base forms
(OH) -1 ion solution . Neutralization is the
process where an acid reacts with a base, which
results in the formation of water.
Strength of acids and bases - how strong or how
weak is an acid or base? Chemist express the
hydrogen ion (H+) of a solution as PH of the
solution taken from the phrase power of
hydrogen the PH values range from 1-14. water
being neutral is given a pH of 7. smaller
numbers of PH values range from 1 -14 and
larger than numbers indicate more basic solution.
Vinegar has a pH of about 2.4 baking soda has a
pH of about 9. other examples are shown in the
figure

Indicators - how do we determine the pH of a

solution in lesson 2 we cited that litmus indicates
If a solution is acidic or basic. A blue litmus
paper will turn red in acid solution while a red
litmus paper will turn blue basic solution. Litmus
paper is an indicator. Indicators indicate if the
substance is acidic or basic. Other indicators
with their pH range and color change shown

An indicator is a dye that changes to a specific

color depending on whether it is placed in an
acidic or basic there are plants locally found that
contains anthocyanins, a plant pigment these the
plants pigment produce specific colors in
solution of different acidity or basicity.
Examples this plants red cabbage. Violet
eggplant peel purple Camote peel or leaves red
Mayana leaves and violet Baston ni San Jose.
You may try getting extracts and try it on
vinegar ( acid) and baking powder solution base.
ELABORATE What is the Importance of Neutralization Taking a base neutralizes
Reaction in Daily Life the excess acid in our
stomach. The ant sting
can be painful as it has
formic acid. We can
neutralize this acid effect
and relieve the pain
caused by the sting by
using moist baking soda
which is basic in nature.
