Optimizing Sports Performance through the Energy Systems
Module Overview
This module will give you the guidelines in choosing the right sport for you to
participate in and knowing the energy system in sports and optimizing sports performance
through the energy systems. This will also help you decide on what sports you can
participate in.

INTERACTION
Learning Activities
Hi! I provided you some reading materials on the different sports categories. Please take time to read and
analyze for you to be ready in your next task. Enjoy!
If you are thinking what sport to join in, remember to consider your physical status, interests, and
willingness to learn the skills needed for the sport. As a guide, assess yourself by answering the following
questions:
The Energy System in Sports and Optimizing Sports Performance through the Energy Systems
As you have learned in the previous year, the three energy systems responsible for the energy
generation are the following:
1. Phosphagen system – It is through this system that muscles obtain energy the fastest. Short
spurts of intense activity such as a six-second sprint or a tennis serve are fueled through this
system.
2. Anaerobic system – This system is responsible for anaerobic glycolysis, which provides energy
that keeps muscles contracting. In anaerobic glycolysis, glycogen or glucose is broken down to
produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) without using oxygen.
3. Aerobic system – This system provides the energy needed to produce movement, albeit at a
slower rate compared to the previous two systems. However, this system can provide much more
energy than the phosphagen and anaerobic systems.
The body utilizes all three ways of obtaining energy, although it should be worth noting that
knowledge of these different energy systems is not enough to improve sports performance. Such
improvement ultimately will depend on various other factors, among them is your body’s ability to digest,
absorb, and use nutrients. In addition, it is important that you monitor the kinds of food you eat because
they provide nutrients needed by your body to perform at peak levels.

Welcome to your Exercises and Drills part. I prepared activities for you to fully
understand the lesson. Don’t forget to read the instruction properly. Happy Learning!
Identify the different sports that you can play. Each sport requires energy for you to optimize
your performance. How can you have enough energy in playing your specific sport(s)? Explain.

Reflection Guide
Choosing to engage in a sport requires you to consider your own physical strengths and weaknesses, so
that you can show your true skills. It is also important that you know the different energy systems as such
knowledge will help you in improving your performance.
Reflective Question:
How important is preparation for any sports event before joining? What are the things you need to do?

Assignment
Your school is preparing for the upcoming varsity try-outs. You are a conditioning coach of the
varsity team in your school and your task is to make conditioning drills for students who wants to try out
sports. The program must be realistic, attainable, and effective. Create exercise or drills to test the
students’ skills to know which sports they are suited in.
Post Assessment
Congratulations, you are now at the final round to complete your module. Read the questions carefully,
encircle the letter of your answer.
