Project GRAPHS: An Experimental Math Intervention for

Learning Recovery

Researchers:

Monalinda R. Gonzales

Marimel S. Estares
I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE:

In School Year 2020 – 2021, schools globally were forced to close due the

COVID 19 Pandemic, some closed for an average of 79 teaching days, while in

the Philippines it has been closed for more than a year. Given the abruptness of

the situation, schools were forced to adopt for a flexible or distance learning

modalities and learners need to enrol in these modalities just to continue their

education. It continues until School Year 2021 – 2022 when modules were

reproduced and provided to learners, leaving parents taking the tutorials to their

child (Donnelly, et.al. ,2021).

According to UNICEF Philippines Representative Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov

(2021) while countries worldwide are taking some actions to provide remote

learning, at least 29 per cent of primary students are not being reached, the

youngest children may not be able to participate due to a lack of support using

the technology, a poor learning environment, pressure to do household chores, or

being forced to work. Further according to her, children who fall behind in

learning during the early years often stay behind for the remaining time they

spend in school, and the gap widens over the years. The number of years of

education a child receives also directly affects their future earnings.

Likewise, Donnelly, et.al. (2021) presented that learning outside the

classroom, may translate into a learning losses or even greater long-term

challenges. In the absence of any intervention, the learning losses arising from

the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to have a long-term compounding negative

effect on many children’s future well-being. These learning losses could translate

into less access to higher education, lower labor market participation, and lower

future earnings.

Furthermore, millions of children lacked basic reading and math skills even

before pandemic. To mitigate these challenges while also building a more

resilient system that can withstand future crises, study funded by World Bank,
UNICEF suggested that reach every child and get them back to the classroom.

Assess every child to measure their level of learning, help children make up for

lost time with learning recovery programs, like catch – up classes and

accelerated learning, ensure children are safe, and protected and health so

they’re ready to learn

df.pdf).

To address this call specifically to determine the learning gap and to ascertain

the Mathematics mastery skills of 23 grade six learners of Palaka Elementary

School, a two-day diagnostic test was conducted. Standardized quarterly test for

grade five of Department of Education was used. Learners were arranged 1

meter distance apart, given a 50 minute allotted time per grading test. Item

analysis by individually checking the answer then individuality list the correct and

wrong responses were used to analysis the test scores. The diagnostic test

reveals that the MPS in first quarter is 39.25%, 2nd quarter 38.48%, 3rd quarter

30.23% and 4th quarter 29.56% with an average MPS of 34.38%.

With the foregoing concerns and Mathematics diagnostic result among grade

VI learners and within context of learning recovery, the researcher being a Math

Teacher is proposing for an experimental Mathematics intervention for learning

recovery entitled: Project GRAPHS – Giving Rewards, Adopt a peer, with

Parent’s Help and using Spencer’s drill.

II. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY

The Project GRAPHS (Giving Rewards, Adopt a peer, with Parent’s Help and

using Spencer’s drill) will be an innovative learning recovery intended for Grade

VI Math learners of Palaka Elementary School located at Palaka Sur,

Pulupandan, Negros Occidental. The intervention will be implemented during

School Year 2022 - 2023.

This Project GRAPHS will employ different approaches in learning process

that will make sure of the following: proper assessment of the mastery of

learners, continuity and enforcement of the topics.

Following activities will be followed:

Oral and written Spencer’s Drill will be formulated and prepared.

There will be Spencer's drill oral recitation before the lesson proper starts

everyday. Then every Friday there will be a written Spencer’s test with time limit.

Giving of Rewards will be every end of summative test and quarterly test to

learners with 80% mastery level.

Identified students with high scores in summative test will Adopt a Peer who

has a lower scores and will have a peer teaching activity during vacant time of

about 30 mins. The project will be seeking Parents engagement by notifying them

the test result through text message, messenger and or letter informing the score

of the learners and will be asked on a timely follow up at homes as Parents Help.

There will be a quarterly monitoring of the progress of the learners and the

implementation of the project.

III. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

This action research aims to determine the following questions:

1. What is the Mathematics pre-test score of Grade VI learners’ of Palaka

Elementary?

2. What is the Mathematics post-test score of the Grade VI learners of Palaka

Elementary School after intervention?

3. Is there significant difference the Mathematics test scores of Grade VI learners of

Palaka Elementary School before and after intervention?

IV. Action Research Methods

A. Research Design

To attain the objectives of the action research, an experimental research design will

be used. According to Bevans (2019) Experimental research designed is best to

determine the causal relationships especially when the study employ set of procedures

or treatment to systematically test a hypothesis or effectiveness of the intervention.

B. Participants of the Study

Participants of the study will be the 13 male and 10 female Grades VI

learners of Palaka Elementary School during the School Year 2022 – 2023. They

are the subject participants in the study, for they are the learners affected by the

shifting learning modality from traditional face to face or classroom learning into

distance learning through module. In addition, the diagnostic test result reveals

that they had very low scores in Mathematics. The MPS in first quarter is 39.25%,

2nd quarter 38.48%, 3rd quarter 30.23% and 4th quarter 29.56% with an average

MPS of 34.38%.

C. Data Gathering Methods

A. Pre-Implementation

There will be scanning on possible innovation programs to revive the lost classroom

learning among grade VI learners specifically Mathematics. Diagnostic Test was used to

determine their current mathematical skills. Development of Contextualized Activities and

Procedures will be formulated after approval of the project and this will be followed by the

meeting to the stakeholders to see to it that there is common understanding of the project,

the objectives and gain their commitment to participate.

Ethical Considerations

The researchers will secure informed consent from the participants for their

participation in the study. Respondents will also be assured of full confidentiality or

anonymity of the information they provide and their identity. No information that discloses the

respondents’ identity will be released or published without their specific consent and will only

be imperatively done if necessary. The materials that contain the raw information derived

from them will be furthermore destroyed by manual shredding after the data processing

within a given period (Annex A, Consent Form)

B. Implementation

Pre-test using Spencer’s Drill will be utilized every start of the class, oral recitation

every Monday and written test every Friday. Adopting a peer will be assigned to each

learners with high scores and will be giving time to peer teach their peers with lower scores.

Preferably 1 is to 1 ratio. Parents will be timely informed of the test scores of their learner

through different means of communication for enforcement. Giving Rewards will be

implemented every summative test and quarterly test. A parallel progress monitoring report

will be submitted every quarter.

C. Post-Implementation

There will be monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of innovation through

Term of Reference.

Final Paper will be presented before the stakeholders. Likewise, evaluation and

monitoring result will be presented.

V. Data Analysis Plan

To determine the Math pre-test score of Grade VI learners’ of Palaka

Elementary, average mean will be used.

Average means will be employed to determine the Math post-test score of the

Grade VI learners of Palaka Elementary School after intervention

To determine the significant difference the Math test scores of Grade VI

learners of Palaka Elementary School before and after intervention t-test will be

used.
