Mia: I’m bored, Ethan.
Ethan: You’re always bored, Mia. Do you want to listen to some music?
Mia: OK, what have you got?
Ethan: Let’s see … Oh, how about this?
Mia: Ethan! Not classical music!
Ethan: Why not? It’s great!
Mia: I’m sure it’s great, but I like pop or hip-hop. I’m really not a fan of Mozart.
Ethan: That wasn’t Mozart, it was Beethoven! It was his Symphony Number 5! Beethoven was brilliant! He composed
some of the best music ever and he never even heard a lot of it!
Mia: What do you mean he never heard it? He wrote it!
Ethan: Yes, but when he was in his twenties, he started having problems with his hearing.
Mia: Really? I didn’t know that. So what did he do?
Ethan: He continued writing music.
Mia: When he couldn’t hear well?
Ethan: Yes. Listen to this. It’s from his Symphony Number 9. Do you recognise it?
Mia: Yes, I recognise it.
Ethan: Well, when Beethoven wrote that, he couldn’t hear anything at all.
Mia: What? He couldn’t hear anything?
Ethan: No, he was completely deaf.
Mia: But that’s impossible! You can’t write music without hearing it.
Ethan: Well, I can’t and you can’t. But people like Beethoven could.
Mia: OK, now I’m interested. Where was Beethoven from?
Ethan: He was born in Bonn in Germany, but he moved to Vienna in Austria. He probably wanted to be in the city
of one of his heroes, Mozart. 

Mia: Was that in the 18th century?

Ethan: He was born in the 18th century, yes. In 1770. He died in 1827.
Mia: 1827? So he wasn’t very old when he died. He was in his fifties.
Ethan: That’s right. People didn’t usually have very long lives at that time. He managed to write a lot of music before he died,
though.
Mia: And people still listen to his music today. Nearly 200 years later.
Ethan: Yes, not bad for a deaf composer!
