SDG 5 Gender Equality
SDG 5 Gender Equality
SDG 5 Gender Equality
CSO Proposal
The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number five is about gender equality and
achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. This means women's and
girls' equal access to education, health care, decent employment, and representation in
political and economic decision-making that helps society and humanity. In this case, I will
be talking about the Latin American region, especially Mexico. This region is number 31 in
the ranking of gender inequality, it needs to work on a lot of aspects regarding this topic.
Over the years Mexico has improved on laws, resources, and education but also, we faced
major challenges starting with the strong male culture. The proposal is centered in gender
equality in the workplace where Mexican women are encouraged to work in engineering
and heavy labor by paying them.
The goal and the main objective of the proposal is to promote Mexican women to
work in engineering and heavy labor works because of the lack of employment and also
social justice. This will help the SDG of gender equality, achieving gender equality and
empowering all women and girls because in Mexico there is a lor of gender inequality as I
said before in the labor field. When working in services or informal jobs (doctors, nurses,
teachers, etc.) they have many disadvantages; more hours that women dedicate to unpaid
work and they look for jobs with flexibility to fulfill their family and parenting roles but at
the same time this causes them to be factors of vulnerability and risk but everything
concludes in as they are in more informal jobs they earn less and have less income than
men if we want to see it that way. So, what this program is trying to do is to encourage
women from indigenous to teenagers, is to work in what society says “careers for men” like
2
science, mathematics and technology where ideologies, culture and stereotypes have always
been a very important factor to women choosing their career and if we go deeper, we can
see how the lack of support at school and at home greatly influences the work. My principal
interest is because as a Mexican teenager I know I have minor help and a minor probability
of success in these occupation areas and I know eventually in long term this will decrease
the inequality, the mentality and ideas of a sexist country and promote human rights. Some
very important characters or elements to achieve this would be to have enough money
allocated for this proposal so that an element to promote this would be an economic support
for studying any of the mentioned careers and this support needs to be from the government
to private schools. Another thing would be to have the approval of private universities in
Mexico. Promote and publicize this project so that women begin to consider their options.
If this idea is implemented, it could achieve both a minor or major change, which would be
that in heavy jobs there would be more women working or even an increase in careers
related to these with women, and as a major change, we could see a change of mentality in
Mexican society. An existing proposal was carried out in Norway. by doing a study "Girls
& Technology" the results were that only 15 percent of female students from the age 15-25
in Norway and Finland consider education or a career in tech. Also, as men were the only
ones working in technology-related fields, there was a lack of personnel in this field. To try
to solve this is to give a certain amount of money to women studying related careers. Trond
Vinje the Head of HR in Tietoevry, hopes to see a rapid change in this trend and wants to
motivate more girls to pursue tech careers. He emphasizes the importance of diversity in
tech. (Tietoevry.com, n.d.).
As I had already said this culture of men working in engineering and heavy jobs and
women in the house is something that still happens in Mexico but with this proposal,
everything could change (culture, mentality, stereotypes) that is one of the most important
points to achieve, but how is it going to be achieved? Well, starting by campaigning and
spreading the word so that women in rural areas and civilization learn about the proposal.
The idea is to give them an economic "prize" for the simple fact of studying engineering if
we want to see it that way, and once this idea is running, seeing that other women did it,
more and more women from all over the country will come and the last achievement is to
3
have a similar percentage of men and women working in the same field and, logically, that
they have equal and fair treatment and salary and by this, it will fulfill the SDG.
Multicultural reflection
Mexico is one of the most recognized countries in gender inequality in different
aspects as work, education and basically daily life situations and all this comes from a
macho culture that includes a lot of things. The education is given to boys and girls
regularly it’s not the same and the ideologies in a family or house are the most influential.
This would be all the cultural background and this would be the biggest problem because of
common sense in the development of the proposal men would not agree. We use critical
thinking in our daily lives and in this project firstly is to know when a source is reliable or
not by analyzing what we are reading and comparing it with our knowledge and by this
processing the information to write an adequate response.
