86062579

The procedure for checking the injection pump static timing using the new tool with the new pin
housing is the same procedure as that described in Service Manual BUR 6–74500NA.

The procedure for checking the injection pump static timing on machines not equipped with the new
timing pin housing is described below on this service bulletin. This is called the “Drop Valve
Method”.

The procedure for replacing the housing with the plastic timing pin with the new housing without the
timing pin is also described in detail on this service bulletin. If the “Drop Valve Method” is used to
locate top–dead–center (TDC), replacing the older timing pin housing (with the plastic pin) with the
new housing (that requires the special tool) is recommended. This will speed up the timing process if
ever required again.

Before performing either of the service procedures described in this section, prepare the machine as
follows:
1. Remove the bucket or attachments from the mounting plate.
2. Park the machine on a level surface.
3. Raise the loader arm.
4. Engage the loader arm lock pins or install the support strut. Refer to the appropriate operators
manual for the model worked on.
5. Lower the loader arm down onto the lock pins or support strut.

WARNING
Failure to engage the lock pins or install the support strut after the loader arm is raised could
cause serious injury or death if the loader arm comes down.
6. Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” position.
7. Remove the key.
8. Assemble the following tools:

*This tool can only be used for checking the injection pump static timing on a machine equipped with
the new timing pin housing.

3/8
To check the injection pump static timing
using the new tool with the new pin
housing, follow this procedure:

1. Remove the plug, 1, from the timing

housing located on the engine.
2. Use the steel timing pin tool to locate the
engine top–dead–center (TDC), following
1
the procedure described in the service
manual.

86062580

To check the injection pump static timing on a 3

machine equipped with the older plastic pin and
original housing, use the following (“Drop–
Valve”) procedure:
2
NOTE: Do not follow the procedure in the
service manual if the engine is equipped with
the plastic pin and original housing. 1

1. First, establish TDC, as follow

̇ Use the engine turning tool and
mounting plate (part numbers
380000732 and 380000988) to manually
86062581
turn the engine over, rotating the
tonewheel, 1, until the un–slotted 4
section, 2, is at the top. This positions
the number one piston near TDC.
̇ Remove the number one cylinder valve
cover. 1
̇ Verify that the engine is near TDC by
checking that the push rods move freely.
If the push rods are tight, it means that
3
they are holding the valves open. Use
the engine turning tool and mounting 2
plate (part numbers 380000732 and
380000988) to rotate the engine one full
turn.
86062582
̇ Rotate the crankshaft backwards, from
TDC, about 20 degrees. This means 5
counter–clockwise (CCW) fan rotation,
as viewed from the fan end of the
engine.
̇ The piston must be down the cylinder
bore far enough so as to not contact the
intake valve when it is depressed.
̇ Using the bolt provided with the tool,
install the valve gauge tool (part number
380001435), 1, onto the rocker arm
shaft bearing block, 2, until the valve, 3,
is fully depressed and the tool is seated
on the bearing block.

4/8
̇ Fabricate a pointed rod, 1, from a piece
of heavy wire.
̇ Attach the pointed rod to a solid object
near the belt pulley, 2.
̇ Turn the engine in a clockwise direction 1
until the piston makes light contact with
the valve.

86062584

̇ Use the pointed rod as a reference

point, and mark the pulley, 2, Figure 6.
̇ Remove the valve gauge tool (part
number 380001435), 1, Figure 5, and
close the intake valve.
̇ Continue to turn the engine in a
1
clockwise direction, for approximately 20
degrees, until the piston is on its down
cycle.
̇ Install the valve gauge tool (part number
380001435), 1, Figure 5, and open the 86062584
number one cylinder intake valve a
second time. 7
̇ Turn the engine in a counterclockwise
direction, until the piston makes light
contact with the valve.
̇ Mark the belt pulley, 1, Figure 7, a
second time, using the rod as a
reference.
̇ Measure between the marks and make
a third mark at mid–point, 1, Figure 8. 1
This third mark indicates TDC. Use it to
time the pump with the engine.
̇ Remove the valve guage tool (part
number 380001435), and allow the 86062584
intake valve to close.
8

5/8
2. Check the static timing, as follows:
̇ Use the special tool (part number
380002729) and the new timing pin
housing (part number 2855287) to 1
position the engine at TDC, or do so by
aligning the TDC mark, 1, Figure 10,
with the reference rod, 2, Figure 10.
̇ Locate the timing plug at the center of
the four injection lines on the injection
pump, and remove it with a 12 mm
socket.
86062583
NOTE: None of the fuel injection lines need to
be removed. 9

̇ Replace the timing plug with the depth

gauge adapter (part number
380001084) and the dial indicator (part
number 380000228), 1, Figure 9, in the
pump. 1
̇ Pre–load the dial indicator
approximately 2.5 mm.
̇ Turn the engine CCW until the dial
indicator needle just stops moving. 2
̇ Zero the dial indicator.
̇ Turn the engine clockwise until the TDC 86062584
mark, 1, lines up with the reference rod,
2 Figure 10. 10

1
̇ Note the timing pre–lift shown on the
gauge, 1. The specifications are 1.10 to
1.20 mm for naturally aspirated engines,
and 0.95 to 1.05 mm for turbo–charged
engines.
̇ If the pre–lift timing is out of
specification, refer to the static timing
reset instructions, which follow. 86062583

11

6/8
3. Reset the static timing, as follows:
• With the engine at TDC and the dial
indicator installed, loosen the three nuts,
1, which secure the injection pump to the
gear housing.

NOTE: Use a 38 cm socket extension, 1

minimum, to loosen the back bolt so that the
dial indicator reading will not be altered.

̇ Use the slots in the injection pump

mount to finely rotate the pump into the
correct position. For example, if the dial
86062585
indicator reading is 0.90 mm, advance
the timing by rotating the pump 12
counterclockwise (upward) until the
specification is reached.
• Tighten the pump mounting nuts.

• Use the procedure on page 5 (headed,

“2. Check the static timing, as follows:”)
to recheck the static timing.

4. If the pre–lift specification cannot be

reached by rotating the pump, proceed as
follows:
• Ensure that the pump mounting nuts are
tight.
• Ensure that the camshaft timing pin is
not engaged.
• Remove the drive gear access cover
and loosen the injection pump nut.

IMPORTANT: Do not loosen the gear from the

shaft yet.

• Turn the engine over until the pre–lift is

1.10 to 1.20 mm for naturally aspirated
̇ engines, and 0.95 to 1.05 mm for turbo–
charged engines.
• Lock the pump by removing the spacer
from under the bolt head on the
mounting flange, and retighten the bolt.
• Using the injection pump drive gear
puller (part number 380000979), remove
the pump. Refer to the pump removal
process in the service manual.
• Turn the engine back to TDC.
• Use solvent to remove oil from the
injection pump driveshaft and gear
tapers.

7/8
IMPORTANT: Tapers must be dried
completely.

̇ Install the pump with the studs at the

middle of the slots and snug the pump
mounting nuts.
̇ Snug the drive gear nut to less than 41
N·m (30 ft–lbs) to temporarily hold the
gear to the shaft.
̇ Loosen the pump lock bolt and reinstall
the spacer under the lock bolt head.
Tighten the bolt. 2
̇ Ensure that the camshaft timing pin is
not engaged.
1
̇ Torque the drive gear nut to 89 to 95
N·m
̇ Tighten the injection pump mounting
nuts.
̇ Verify that the pump pre–lift is 1.10 to
1.20 mm for naturally aspirated engines,
and 0.95 to 1.05 mm for turbo–charged
engines. 86062579
̇ Test the running and starting 13
performance

5. Optional timing pin housing replacement:

̇ After locating TDC using the Drop Valve
Method, loosen the two retaining
screws, 1, and remove the timing pin
housing and plastic pin, 2.
̇ Ensure that the crankshaft is at TDC.
̇ Install the new timing pin housing (part
number 2855287), using the special
timing pin tool (part number
380002729).
̇ Apply Loctiteä 242 locking compound to
the mounting screws and tighten them to
6 N·m .
̇ Ensure that the special tool will slide
easily into and out of the locking
position. If it does not move freely,
loosen the screws slightly and move the
housing until it does move freely.
̇ Retighten the screws.
̇ Remove the tool and install the plug.
