Directions: In order to meet the needs of ancient people, many technologies have emerged.
Answer the following questions based on your understanding of the ancient world.
1. What are the technologies that arose in ancient times? How were these technologies
meet the needs of the primitive people?
Some notable technologies that were invented during the ancient times are gear and
screw which are create by the Greeks, the compass, gunpowder, papermaking, and
printing created by the Chinese, the concrete and the rotary motion created by the
Romans.
The gear and the screw were a huge help in terms of agricultural purposes. One notable
use of these inventions is the Archimedes’ screw which helped on transferring water
from irrigation to another.
The most famous invention of the ancient Chinese is the use of gunpowder. It was
widely used on military affairs thus made a huge variety of weaponry such as cannons,
explosives, and ammunitions and is also used periodically on celebratory occasions.
The use of cement in ancient Rome is customarily used on construction plans such as
buildings and path ways. Using the rotary motion lifting devices were made as well as
agricultural tools making their work faster and more convenient.
2. Give examples of ancient technologies from which our modern day technologies
evolved.
The Water Alarm Clock that uses continues water flow in a vessel and pebbles as alarm
sounds when the vessel is full which evolved on our mechanical or digital alarm clocks.
The Papyrus paper has a longer process of drying plants rather than our Papers coming
from factories.

The Baghdad battery has a much larger size but has less power of up to 1 volt of
electricity than our normal batteries which has 12.6 to 12.8 volts.
The Toothpaste back in ancient Egypt uses spices and perfumes rather than our
chemical based toothpastes.
The Compass back then has a larger body but same concept that we also use on our
modern compasses but is more sophisticated.
