Introduction paragraph
Human beings love to explore! It’s not surprising that many people want to see
manned flights to Mars. After all, by sending people to Mars, we can learn more about how
the planet was formed, and make all kinds of scientific discoveries. However, although the
study of space is important, I believe that we should not be sending people to Mars.
Body paragraph 1
Firstly, think about the cost. It is far more expensive to send people to Mars than it is to send
robots, because robots don't need food and water, and if something goes
wrong they don’t have to be rescued. Why send humans to Mars at vast expense, when the
same job can be done by robots far more cheaply?
Body paragraph 2
Secondly, think about the safety issues. It takes around 15 minutes for messages to travel between
Earth and Mars using radio waves - so if a terrible accident happened on a spaceship orbiting
Mars, it would be impossible to respond quickly. Also, we don’t yet know exactly what the
effect of a very long space flight would be on the human body.
Body paragraph 3
In addition, most of the science that could be done by humans on Mars canalso be done by
robots. This means we would not get much extra benefit for all the extra cost of sending
humans rather than robots into space.
Body paragraph 4
Finally, there are many more effective things we could spend our money on. If we
want to invest in space exploration, we could put money into making a human colony or
settlement on the moon. Or we could develop space-based solar power, to help solve our
energy problems on Earth. There are many other ways of spending this money too.
Conclusion
For all these reasons, I believe that we should not be trying to send humans to Mars - and I
hope that now you are convinced of this too!
