Marie shared ¼ slice of cake to her friend. Her sister
shared 3/8 slice of cake to her best friend. How many slices of
cake did they share altogether?
Questions:
1. How much cake Marie shared with her friends? How about
her sister?
2. What does the problem ask you to find?
3. How will you solve the problem?

Adding Dissimilar Fractions

How to add dissimilar fractions?

--To add dissimilar fraction:


1. Look for the LCM of the fractions.
2. Change the dissimilar fractions to similar fractions.
3. Add the fractions.
4. Simplify your answers in lowest term if needed.

Example:
 1/2 + 8/3 = 3/6 + 16/6 = 19/6 or 3 1/6
 2/4 + 3/8 = 4/8 + 3/8 = 7/8

Go back to the problem and solve.
