Activity No. 1
EVALUATE AND IDENTIFY

Activity Background:

This lesson builds on the understanding of the different trigonometric

functions by discovery, deriving, and working with trigonometric identities as well as
identifying identity and conditional equations.
An identity is an equation that is true for all values of the variable in the
domain of the equation otherwise, it is a conditional equation.

What you need: pen, notebook/paper

What to do: There are two groups of equations, evaluate them by assigning x to any
values. Answer the questions that follow.

𝑥2 − 1 = 0 𝑥 2 − 1 = (𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 + 1)
(𝑥 + 7)2 = 𝑥 2 + 49 (𝑥 + 7)2 = 𝑥 2 + 14𝑥 + 49
𝑥2 − 4 𝑥2 − 4
= 2𝑥 − 1 =𝑥+2
𝑥−2 𝑥−2

Guide Questions:
1. After evaluating, what can you observe with the values on the left and right side
of the equation in Group A? in Group B?

2. In group A, do all values of x makes the equation true?

3. In group B, do all values of x makes the equation true?

4. What kind of equations are there in Group A? in Group B?

FOLLOW ME!

Activity Background: EVEN – ODD IDENTITIES

The first two of the negative identities can be obtained from the graphs of the
sine and cosine functions, respectively. (See previous module on graphs of sine and
cosine)

sin(−𝜃) = − sin 𝜃

cos(−𝜃) = cos 𝜃

The third identity can be derived as follows:

sin(−𝜃) − sin 𝜃
tan(−𝜃) = = = − tan 𝜃
cos(−𝜃) cos 𝜃
or simply

tan(−𝜃) = − tan 𝜃

PYTHAGOREAN IDENTITIES

If P(x, y) is the terminal point on the unit circle corresponding to 𝜃, then 𝑥 2 +

𝑦2 = 1. Since sin 𝜃 = y and cos 𝜃 = x, we get 𝑐𝑜𝑠2 𝜃 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃 = 1 or

What you need: pen, notebook/paper

What to do: Derive the third Pythagorean identity, the second Pythagorean identity
is done for your reference. Follow the procedure given.

1. Use the first Pythagorean identity:

COMPLETING THE SQUAD

Activity Background:

We can also use trigonometric identities to find the value of other trigonometric
functions

Example
5
𝑠𝑒𝑐 𝜃 = 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑎𝑛 𝜃 < 0
2

Since secant is the reciprocal of cosine and it’s positive so θ lies either in QI or QIV,
but tan 𝜃 < 0 (negative) is in QII or QIV, so the 𝛉 lies in QIV.

Note: secant and cosine functions must be positive since θ lies in QIV

5 1 2
1. sec 𝜃 = 2. cos 𝜃 = =
2 sec 𝜃 5

To find sin 𝜃 , use the Pythagorean identity:

𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃 + 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝜃 = 1
𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃 = 1 − 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝜃
sin 𝜃 = ± √1 − 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝜃

Note: sine and cosecant functions must be negative since θ lies in QIV
