Advice for exams

Transcript:
Morning, everyone. Quiet, please. Right, OK. So, today I’m going to give you some advice to
help you prepare for the exams next week. So, make some notes as I’m talking, please.
Everybody ready?
Now, while you’re studying, eat food that gives you energy. Don’t be tempted to eat sweets or
drink cola. Sugar won’t help you study but fruit and cereals will. Apples, actually, are especially
good.
Find a comfortable place with plenty of light when you study. But not ‘too’ comfortable or you’ll
fall asleep!
Try and keep a positive mind. It is easier to study when you are positive and relaxed. Now, if you
start feeling anxious, have a little break. Go out for a stroll around the block.
Don’t try to learn everything. There isn’t time. Just choose the ‘important’ things, the things that’ll
get you the most points in an exam. And if you aren’t sure about this, ask me.
First, learn the main ideas and don’t worry too much about the details. If you have time, you can
come back later and read the details.
Make notes of these key points and read them, then cover them up and try to remember all the
points. Now, it might be boring, but repetition helps you to remember.
Use past exam papers to study. They will help you understand what kind of questions come up.
There are plenty of past exam papers in the library. You can photocopy them and take them
home.
Take regular breaks while you’re studying. A five-minute break every half hour is usually enough.
Get some fresh air and stretch your arms and legs. Drink a glass of water too. It’s important to
keep hydrated.
And, last but not least, good luck! I’m sure you’ll all do your best.

Speaker A: Hi, have you spent that money you earned last weekend yet?
Speaker B: Well, I was thinking of getting some new software for my laptop, but it was very
expensive, so I decided to wait for a while. I got a new black jacket in the sales and I think I might get
a couple of books tomorrow, too.
Speaker A: Great. If you get the new Harry Potter, can I borrow it after you?
Speaker B: Sure.

Hi, Angela – it’s Martin. I just thought I’d let you know – the tennis match tonight has been cancelled
because of the weather. They say it’s going to rain all evening! Rita and I wondered if you’d like to
come round for a meal? We’re cooking a curry and I know you like that. Give me a call back when
you get this message. Bye!

Speaker A: We got our test marks in class today and mine were very bad! My dad’s going to be
really angry.
He thinks I didn’t work hard enough for them.
Speaker B: But you did. Every time I saw you, you were studying!
Speaker A: Yeah, it’s a shame I had a headache on the day of the test. You did well, didn’t you?
Speaker B: Yes. That was a surprise! I couldn’t answer half the questions – my memory is terrible
these days. But I guess well!

We are just getting some news about two children who fell through the ice on Blue Lake this
afternoon. It seems that a boy and a girl followed their dog when it ran onto the ice and then fell
through. Luckily, another dog walker saw them and called the emergency services. Firefighters
arrived quickly and managed to pull the children out.
5
I’m phoning because I was very upset by the programme planning yesterday. I got up early because I
wanted to watch the motor racing and instead I found there was a tennis championship on. There was
no apology or even an explanation! I’m sure a lot of people like me were very angry. In the end I had
to listen to it on the radio, but that’s not the same because you can’t see the cars!

C It’s very easy to lose touch with old friends.

3 What would Martin say about himself and Jenny?

B He isn’t sure about whether he wants to continue studying when he leaves school.
C He hasn’t made his mind up about where to study yet.

SCRIPT:
Jenny: Hi, Martin. Have you decided which universities you are going to apply to?
Martin: Hi, Jenny. I think so. I’m thinking of staying here and going to the local college.
Jenny: Really? It hasn’t got a very good reputation. Not many people come here from other towns.
You’ll be with people from school.
Martin: I know. That’s why I like the idea. Why leave old friends to find new ones? I don’t want to
lose touch with everyone and I get on well with most of the people who are going to go to the college.
Jenny: You don’t have to lose touch with anyone. Your close friends will always be there for you.
You’ll come back during the holidays and meet everyone but you’ll also have new friends. That’s
what life’s all about. Meeting people. Anyway, what about after college? You won’t stay here for the
rest of your life, will you?
Martin: Why not? I’m not like you. I’m not adventurous.
I like the security of living near my family and friends. I realise it wouldn’t suit you, though.
Jenny: Well, you’re certainly right about me but I’m not convinced you’re right about yourself. Yes,
life would be easier if you stayed here but I think that, if you left, in the end you’d be happier.
Martin: Why?
Jenny: Because you’d change. You’re a friendly, kind person with a good sense of humour. You’d
soon make friends. There would be people with similar interests to you and you’d learn from them.
More than you’d learn by hanging around with Kevin Sampson and his gang.
Martin: Kevin’s OK.
Jenny: He’s immature. Yes, he’s funny and popular and I’m sure you’ll have fun with him during the
holidays but, believe me, you need to escape from him.
Martin: Didn’t you go out with him?
Jenny: That was a long time ago. We had one date when we were fifteen. And that was enough!
Martin: Well, I’ll think about it. Thanks for the advice. It’s always welcome.
Jenny: No problem. Look, I must go. See you later.
Martin: OK. Bye.

1 The story of Robin Hood has been known for 600 years.
2 William Tell, El Cid and Janosik are international heroes.
3 A sixteenth-century History of Great Britain includes a story about Robin Hood.
4 Robin Hood was King Edward II's knight.
5 It is probable that Robin Hood lived in the twelfth century.
6 There is a castle in the middle of Sherwood forest.
7 ln the visitors' centre you can't watch a video about Robin's adventures.
8 According to tradition, Lady Marion became Robin Hood's wife in Edwinstowe
church.
Robin Hood
The story of Robin Hood, the most popular English folk hero of all times, has reached every
corner of the Earth. There are many versions of this well-known tale which is about 600 years
old. Everybody knows Robin's friends (Little John, Brother Tuck, Will Scarlet), and the famous
Sherwood Forest - Robin Hood's home and the place where many of his adventures took place.
In other countries there are similar stories, such as William Tell in Switzerland, El Cid in Spain
or Janosik in Poland, but only Robin Hood has become an 'international' hero.
Unfortunately, there is almost no evidence that Robin Hood really existed. Thirteenth-century
ballads, fourteenth-century chronicles, a sixteenth-century History of Great Britain, all talk

7
about Robin Hood. However, none of them tells us about the sources they used. In the 1800s
and 1900s, historians found two Robin Hoods who lived in the fourteenth century. One of them
was even King Edward II's servant. Later on, other historians found several different Hoods
living in different parts of England - Robin was a popular Christian name and Hood was a fairly
common surname. It seems that by 1337, the story of Robin Hood was well established. Most
probably, he lived around the year 1200.
Today, the legend of Robin Hood has turned Nottinghamshire into a large tourist attraction. In
the centre of Nottingham there is Nottingham Castle.
Parts of it still recall the time of Robin Hood. Sherwood forest has an excellent visitor's centre
with an attractive display and shop, and some very pleasant walks in the nearby forest.
Edwinstowe church, in which, according to tradition, Robin Hood and Lady Marion were
married, is one of the visitors' favourite sites.

Do you love diving into the water on a hot summer's day? Diving can be great fun but it canalso be
dangerous. Just imagine diving froma cliff that is 26 meters high! A cliff dive begins like any other dive,
but the divers must always ente with their feet first, to protect their arms, shoulders and neck. The
dive lasts only three sconds, but the divers train hard for hours and hours to be able to do it safely.
When they hit water, the're moving fast, at about 90 kilometers per hour! At that speed, if they make
a small mistake, the consequences can be terrible. The weather and the state of the sea make
difference to each dive. When the sea is moving a lot, the divers can't calculate the dive well and the
competition stops.
A sign of the recent popularity of diving is the British TV programme Splash!. In this programme,
famous people learn to dive from a height of up to ten meters. That's not as high as cliff diving, but
it's still like jumping from the third floor of a tall building. Some people say the programme is
dangerous becaus it gives the impression that diving is easy. Others say it's dangerous for actors and
musicians to do an activity that divers spend years training to do. There are competitiors who can't
swim and who hurt themselves badly.
1. Why is it difficult to be a cliff diver?
a. Each dive is very short.
b. You need to prepare for a long time before you dive.
c. Divers hurt themselves in every dive.
2. In cliff-diving, it's always a bad idea to...
a. make impact with th ewater with your hands and arms first.
b. dive quickly.
c. hit the water at over 90kph.

a. the weather conditions are bad.
b. one cmpetitor can't continue diving.
c. the water isn't warm.
4. Some people are unhappy with th etV programme Splash! Because...
a. the dives are not very high.
b. the competitors are not very good.

c. it gives the wrong idea about the sport.

TV series
There are many TV shows about young people and their problems. We ask two youngsters. Rita and
Meg, about their favourite series and its main character.

Rita: I think that my favourite series at the moment is Get Real. It is about an American family with
two sons and a daughter. The daughter's name is Megan. I like her character very much. She is 17
years old. She has got long, dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. She is quite hard – working but
she doesn't have plans to study at university. She hasn't got many friends because she is quite shy. I
like the series because it is about real problems in the life of young people. At first it looks like a
comedy but then it changes into a real drama.
Meg: I must say I prefer comedy to drama. My favourite TV series is Gilmore Girls. There are two
main characters, a single mother and her daughter, a 17 year-old girl called Rory. She is not very tall
and has got long brown hair. Rory is a very good student and an ambitious person. She always reads
books and works very hard. She hasn't got many friends because she is now in a new school. Rory is
quiet and not very outgoing, but her mother is a real rebel. I sometimes think that Rory is a kind of
parent and her mother is a little girl.

1. Rita likes the TV series about

A. two American teenagers.
B. a family with small children.

Survival holidays in Alaska – a personal story

On May 6 I set up a base camp on the ice cap and waited for the plane to bring food. For the next
four days it snowed and the plane didn’t come. Sometimes I went out for a short ski, but most of the
time I lay silently in my tent, alone with my thoughts.
As the days passed, I grew very anxious. I had no radio and no other means of communication. I was
almost out of stove fuel, so I couldn’t cook anything. I had some cheese and three packets of crisps.
This, I hoped, would be enough for three or four more days. But what next?
When I woke up on May 10 it was still snowing and it was very windy. I didn’t know what to do: start
walking to the coast in the morning or sty here, on the ice cap. Suddenly I heard something, I
couldn’t believe my luck: it was a plane! I ran out of the tent. I waved my arms and shouted, and
then I took my sleeping bag and waved it in the air. When the plane began to fly in my direction, I
felt tears of joy in my eyes.. The pilot came and went three times and he dropped two boxes of food
every time. Then the plane disappeared and there was silence all around me again. I felt sad,
depressed, lost. On May 11 the weather was good and I knew it was time for me to do something. I
packed up my rucksack and began skiing. After two days that also involved walking through deep
snow and climbing high rocks, I came to the coast. My adventure was over.

Do you believe in fairies?

Well, a friend of mine, Ron Black, probably does. He has just published a book on fairies and their
secret lives. In his book he is trying to prove that fairies exist and live everywhere around us. There
are different types of fairies. Some of them are very good and they always help people. Other fairies
are very hard to please. When they get angry, they can even steal a human child or make you very ill.
Fairies live not just under flowers and leaves in gardens, but also in our homes. There was a custom
in some countries to leave something to eat and drink in the corners where people thought the
fairies were most active. Today, as Ron writes, people forget to feed fairies properly. That’s why
there are so many wars and conflicts in the world. But does Ron really believe in fairies? Has he ever
seen one? When I ask such questions, he only smiles. Then he takes out a plan of his house and
shows me where they live in his place: brownies in the bathroom, goblins in the kitchen and pixies in
the bedroom upstairs. So who knows? The next time I’ve got a headache, I will remember to leave
some milk in the corner of my bathroom.

1. Ron Black wrote his book to

A. describe one typical fairy.
B. prove the existence of fairies
C. characterise good fairies.
D. detail the bad luck brought by some fairies.

2. The old custom shows that

A. fairies in the past were more active than today.
B. people in the past weren’t very serious.
C. wars happen when fairies are hungry.
D. people once believed in fairies.

3. In Ron’s home
A. there are three types of fairies.

11
B. brownies are the most active.
C. one type of fairy lives downstairs.
D. the fairies want a lot of food.

4. The author’s final comment shows that

A. she has always believed in fairies.
B. she doesn’t want to hurt Ron.
C. her headache is really strong.
D. she thinks Ron may be right.

How to survive an avalanche?

OK, so you can ski really well and you can climb mountains easily. But, can you survive an avalanche?
Avalanches are when snow suddenly falls down a mountain. 150 people die in avalanches each year.
People usually start them by accident when they are skiing or climbing in the mountains. There are
things that you can do to survive an avalanche. First, always check the weather carefully before you
go to the mountains. Take rescue signals or transmitters. They help people to know where they are.
And take decisions about what to do before an avalanche starts. When the avalanche comes, you
can’t talk about what to do; there is no time. When the avalanche begins, the first thing to do is to
leave all your things as fast as you can. Skis or a big heavy bag can pull you down under the snow.
Next, move your hands, arms and legs and start ‘swimming’. You do this to stay above the snow. If
possible, jump to one side to escape the avalanche. And when the avalanche comes, close your
mouth. Snow can get in quickly and stop you from getting air. If the snow covers you, make a space
in front of your mouth immediately so that you can breathe. If you can, put your arms up above the
snow to show people where you are. If you can’t, wait calmly and patiently. Don’t shout and don’t
panic. People can’t hear you under the snow.

1. What is an avalanche?
A. Another name for snow.
B. A person who can climb mountains easily.
C. When snow suddenly falls down a mountain.
D. A native American tribe

2. What is the usual cause of avalanches?

A. Snow and wind.
B. People doing sport and other activities.
C. People who fall down the mountain.
D. Pollution.

3. Why is it important to take decisions before the avalanche starts?

A. Because the weather often changes.
B. Because you need to decide to bring your skiis.
C. Because when the avalanche begins it is difficult to speak.
D. Because it will kill you.

12
4. When the avalanche arrives , it’s a good idea to…….
A. jump up and down.
B. take off your equipment.
C. call to members of your group.

Underwater rugby

Underwater rugby is an unusual sport. People think that it is similar to rugby. It isn’t. You play
underwater, so you have to be able to swim well. The game has two halves. Each half is fifteen
minutes. In the middle, the game stops and the players have a break for four minutes. There are two
teams. One team usually wears white and the other team wears blue and black. Each team has
eleven players. But your team can’t have eleven players in the water at the same time. Only six
people from each team can be in the water. Ii is very difficult to swim fast under water for a long
time. So the other five players are substitutes; they go in and play when the other players are tired.
There are two goals, one at each end of the swimming pool. They are like the baskets in basketball
but they are on the bottom of the pool. To score a goal, you must put the ball in the basket. The ball
has got salt water inside it. This makes the ball go down in the water, nor up. The players mustn’t
take the ball out of the water. You mustn’t attack another player. If you do, you have to be out of
the water for two minutes and your team must play with only five people, not six.

1. To play underwater rugby, it’s important to be good at

A. swimming.
B. rugby.
C. unusual sports.
D. bungee jumping.

2. The players play for

A. 15 minutes.
B. 30 minutes.
C. 34 minutes.
D. 90 minutes.

3. You can easily see different teams because

A. one team has men, the other has women.
B. they have very different colours.
C. one team has to swim fast, but the other doesn’t.
D. they have different complexion.

4. In a game of underwater rugby, there are usually players in the water in

A. six

B. eleven
C. twelve
D. ten

People say that pubs are important as museums in Great Britain. Their long history has played a big
role shaping the customs and culture of this country but they have also become very popular in other
European countries all over the world. English public houses or pubs are one of the characteristic
features of British life. They are visited by members of every social class , both young and old, men
and women. In London alone, there are nearly seven thousand pubs. Going to a different one every
night, would take you around twenty years.
The most popular name for a pub is ‘The Red Lion’. You can eat a little, play darts, billiards or discuss
events of the day. In many pubs you can even watch sports programmes. Some pubs offer live music
to listen to. At present, there are about seventy- three thousand pubs in Great Britain. Many of them
date back to the seventeenth or eighteenth century. All of them offer new guests a warm welcome
and a nice, friendly atmosphere. There are, however, a few rules which you must follow. For example,
you should always order a drink in a pub. You should also know when to leave. There are always two
bells to warn you o finish your drink – at 10.50 p.m. and 11.00p.m. You must leave the pub by 11.20

Time for coffee

The story of coffee drinking is on e of the greatest and most fascinating in history. Millions of coffee
drinkers worldwide cannot imagine life without a cup of aromatic coffee in the morning. Coffee is a
natural stimulant which makes us feel more awake, alert and ready to concentrate. The qualities of
mocca, as a coffee was once known, were first discovered in Ethiopia more than one thousand years
ago. However, it was not Africans but Turks and Arabs who actively encouraged coffee drinking. The
habit of coffee drinking quickly spread throughout the Arab world, where coffee won a reputation as
the wine of Islam. Coffee was first grown in Yemen. It was popular with Turks who served the drink
to visiting Italian merchants. In 1615 traders from Venice brought coffee to Europe, where it was
originally sold as a medicine. By the end of the sixteenth century coffee was drunk in major European
cities from Paris to London. Now, around the world there are different methods of preparing coffee,
for example, in Turkey coffee is traditionally boiled three times, while Italians are the inventors of
espresso and cappuccino. We drink coffee because of its aroma, taste and stimulating effect. However,
extensive consumption of coffee may be harmful to our health, for instance, it may increase one’s
blood pressure or make one’s heart beat irregularly. Fortunately, new brands of coffee have been
appearing on the market recently. As they do not contain substances harmful to health, many people
will not have to give up their coffee- drinking habits.

THE BUMBLEBEE
I think the bumblebee is the most interesting insect. The bumblebee is a type of large bee. It’s not the
same as a honey bee. Its body is rounder and fatter and it’s got bright yellow and black hairs on its
back. Bumblebees don’t produce very much honey, so there isn’t enough for people to collect and eat.
These bees aren’t dangerous and they hardly ever sting. When honey bees sting, they die, but after a
sting a bumblebee won’t die. A bumblebee can sting several times.
Most bumblebees live in small colonies or groups of about 50 bees and they have a queen. The queens
lay eggs after sleeping all winter. People should realise that these bees are very important to the
world. While they are visiting flowers looking for food, they help new flowers to grow by spreading
pollen. Without the bumblebees many flowers and fruit trees cannot grow.
There are about 250 types of bumblebee in the world, but they are having a lot of problems. Three
types are now extinct and scientists believe many others will disappear in a few years. There are many
reasons for this. A lot of bumblebees are dying from a disease that they get when they visit certain
flowers. Scientists are going to do more studies in the future to try to find the best way to protect
bumblebees against this disease.
Another reason is that a lot of large fields are disappearing. This means there are fewer places where
bumblebees can find food. Gardens are a very good habitat for bumblebees and we should make our
gardens better places for them to visit. Plant lots of flowers and more bumblebees will fly into your
garden. The best flowers are the most brightly coloured – especially purple, blue and pink. Scientists
say that bumblebees can’t see the colour red! I’m going to plant flowers in a box outside my bedroom
window this year. It will be great to see and hear the bees, and help the environment, too.

Jason lives in a big house near the sea. Now, that’s not really unusual, is it? A lot of people live in big
houses. But Jason’s house is very big! There are 20 bedrooms, two kitchens, a big dining room for
forty people and a swimming pool too! I’m sure you’re thinking Jason has got a very big family. But
you’re wrong! Jason lives in a hotel.

Jason’s mum and dad are the owners of The Jackson Star Hotel in the lovely seaside town of Barnaby.
A lot of people go there in the summer for their holidays. And a lot of them stay at Jason’s hotel. It’s
very popular! Jason’s family live in a small flat at the top of the hotel. Every day Jason gets the bus to
school. His mum and dad work in the hotel.

So, do you think Jason likes living in a big hotel? Here is what he says:

Jason: Yes, I like my room. It’s very high up, and from one window I can see all over the town and
from the other window I can see the sea. That’s great. It’s also good for my friends. They like staying
here because the bedrooms are nice and comfortable, and we get very, very good food! I like the
people too. A lot of them come from different places in the world, and it’s interesting to talk to them.

But is there anything he doesn’t like?

Jason: Sometimes, in the winter, there aren’t a lot of people here. Then I sometimes get frightened
at night. It’s big and empty and it’s like a horror film!!

Hi Mike,

Were you at home last night? There was an incredible programme on TV! There isn’t usually anything
interesting on a Thursday night, but I decided to watch half an hour’s TV after my homework. I was
very glad I did. It was all about food. Now, I know you’re thinking it was probably one of these TV
chef programmes or a food competition – I know I often watch those, but this one was a bit
different! Yes, it had famous chefs in it, and yes, it was a sort of competition, but they had to make
meals – good meals from food that people throw away! Urggh! I can hear you now!

But it wasn’t old, horrible food. They went to supermarkets and shops to find things they throw
away. But the food is still very good. They found lots of bread that was only a day old and at some
street markets they found fruit, bananas and strawberries that were a little brown, but still perfectly
OK to eat! They also showed us how much people like you and me throw away every week. It was

17
terrible. We waste so much food because we buy so much and then we can’t eat it all! They also
showed us a farmer who has to throw away a lot of his vegetables because they aren’t the right size
for the shops! People don’t want carrots when they are very big or very small, so the farmers throw
them away or give them to the pigs! It was the same with fish and animals too. People only want the
nice parts of the animal – the parts that look good. They throw away everything else. I couldn’t
believe it. Some shop owners wanted to throw meat – good meat – away on Friday because they
knew they couldn’t use it all over the weekend.

You must watch the programme when they show it again! From now on, we eat everything in our
fridge!

Speak soon!

MY WORK E XP ERIEN C E B LOG

BY KAREN JONES

18
This is my third week of work experience, and I have another three weeks to go. It hasn’t
been easy, but I’m so glad I decided to do it. I’ve already learnt a lot about banking, but it’s
so much more than that – I’ve travelled half way across the world, made friends for life,
improved my personal skills and self-confidence and had my first taste of
independence!
I graduated from university last year with a degree in Maths. I really didn’t know what I
wanted to do after that, so I needed some time to think about my future career. When I first
saw the advert for this project, I didn’t think it was for me. London, UK, is a long way away
from Hong Kong, where I’ve lived my whole life. How would I manage without my family
and friends? I talked about it with my parents, and in the end I decided to apply. To my
surprise, I got in – and by then it was too late to change my mind!
I’m not earning much, of course, because it isn’t a real job. The project pays for my
expenses and gives me some pocket money too. I only had to pay for the airfare, so really
it’s quite a good deal. My parents are coming out to see me when I finish and we’re going
to spend a week sightseeing. I’m looking forward to that because I love seeing new places
and meeting new people.
This has been a great adventure for me, and I’ve discovered a lot about myself – including
the fact that banking isn’t really the profession for me! I have, however, found out what I
really love – and that’s travelling! So I think that’s where my career lies.

Mobile phones are an important part of our lives and most of us can’t imagine life without one. They
keep us in contact with friends and family at all times and when we have a problem we can call

19
immediately for help. Now parents can buy a special mobile phone for their four-year-old children. Is
this a way to help protect our young children or is it a silly idea?
The phone is called My Moby and it looks like a toy, but it isn’t. It comes in many colours and young
children love it. It has five buttons and two of them call Mum and Dad. Of course, the parents control
all the numbers in the phone and the idea is that the child can call their parents when they want to.
Also, the parents can call the child too! Many parents like the idea and they think it’s good for safety.
If the child gets lost they can call home!
However, not everyone agrees that it is a good idea. Many people are angry. They think children
today are growing up too fast. They want to be like adults when they are very young and this isn’t
good. They need to enjoy their childhood. These people think it is a very bad idea to give a four-
year-old a mobile phone. They think it is unnecessary and it can be dangerous for their health. They
say that young children don’t need to use a phone because they are always with an adult.
So, is it a good idea or not? Can phones be good to protect our children or are they just good for the
phone company? What do you think? Send us your comments.

Read the article about identity. Decide if the statements are true (T), false (F) or not mentioned
(NM).
A New Identity Every Week!
Imagine having a job where you have to take on a new identity every week or month! That’s what
actors do. For every play or film, they have to become a different person, often with a different
personality and different appearance. One week they’re kind, generous and blonde, and the next
week, they’re tall, thin and arrogant! So, how do they do it? And do it so well?
Actors think about acting their new characters in different ways. Some, like the famous Robert De
Niro, want to ‘live’ the role. They learn everything they can about the new person they are going to
become. Then they do everything their character would do. They dress the same, they eat the same
things, they talk in the same way and even try to walk like them. The idea is to start ‘thinking’ like the
new character. And they don’t behave like this only in the studio or on stage, but they take the
character home as well! That must be difficult for the rest of the family! Who’s going to be at
breakfast with us today – Al Capone, the President of the USA, Jack the Ripper??
Other actors create their characters in different ways. Some say that changing their appearance helps
them to become the new person. Costume and make-up are very important, but some actors do
even more to change their appearance. Some actors eat a lot to become fatter for some parts – like
Renee Zellweger in the Bridget Jones films and then diet to get thin again for the next film! Some
grow their hair long or even go bald! Some really good actors can make us believe that they’re taller
or stronger than they really are just by the way they act. Others need a bit of help – like Tom Cruise
in his high shoes, or Robert Redford, who sometimes had to stand on a box because he’s quite short!
The best actors are the ones who don’t take their own personality with them into the
role. They take on the new identity completely and we don’t think of the actor, but of the character.
Heath Ledger, who died in 2008, was like this. He could change so completely that we don’t
immediately think ‘oh that’s Heath Ledger’! He could be handsome, ugly, blonde or dark. He could be
clever, stupid, funny or serious. He was a master at changing identity.

20
Actors have a difficult job and I admire them a lot. Personally, I think it’s quite enough to have just
one identity!

2 Some actors spend time with the people who they are trying to copy. T/F/NM

The Rodriguez Brothers Circus is in town! Every year, the circus arrives and stays for a week. Then
they go to the next town.
There are not many animals in the circus. People told the circus that they didn't like seeing animals
performing. There is an elephant called Jacob and two old lions, Hattie and Meg.
Most of the performers are human! There is Leopold, The Strongest Man In The World. His father
also worked in the circus, but Leopold is stronger than him, he has bigger arms and bigger legs too!
Leopold performs his act every night for the town's people who come to watch.
Another performer is Clara. She says she has the longest hair in the world. It's about 4 metres long!
She also has a daughter who works in the circus. Her name is Sue-Ellen. Her hair is a lot shorter, but
she wants to grow it as long as her mother's. Sue-Ellen helps look after the animals and she's also
learning how to juggle.
The highlight of the circus are the three clowns, Pit, Pot and Pat. They all wear long red shoes, but
Pat's shoes are the longest and sometimes, he falls over because they're so long! They perform for
about twenty minutes and they are always the most popular act with the audience, especially the
children. Many people think Pit, Pot and Pat are three brothers, but Pat is older than the other two -
he's their father! He's the oldest clown in the country, but he has a lot of energy.
Tomorrow will be the longest, most tiring day because the circus is leaving town and everything must
be packed away into big trucks.

Working for the news centre in London

Visitors to London are always impressed by this exciting city, with its numerous attractions of all
kinds. For me, London’s most interesting place is a huge Building at 200 Gray’s Inn Road, the home of

22
ITN- Independent Television News. This was my London for the past year. Once you get into the glass
and steel giant, you cannot resist the feeling that you have come to the centre of the world.
Hundreds of journalists and the most famous presenters are rushing around with reports of the
latest world news – all just around you. ITN is a huge news organization providing bulletins, scripts
and pictures to independent radio and television stations around the UK. Whether you are watching
ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5, you will see the news that is broadcast From Gray’s Inn Road in London.
For those who are more curious, it is worth coming to see the building itself. If you are lucky you can
even see Channel 5 News broadcast live. When I first came to ITN, I was a student of radio and
television journalism. Working as a young journalist in England, I had the chance to see the things
ordinary people cannot see. I never thought that I would be sitting at a journalist’s desk in Parliament
listening to the live reports of debates. I took part in may press conferences of top ministers and
government secretaries. I was doing my own surveys in the streets of London. One of the strangest
things was the way most of the journalists did their editing work. They did not use computers, but
rather they cut up the tapes and then put them together with some sticky tape. I felt I was in
museum of technology. If you happen to be in London, remember, the centre of the world at 200
Gray’s Inn Road. Just take the Central Line of the underground to Chancery Lane station. It is only
five- minute walk to ITN. Stand there and try to imagine what wonderful things are going inside.

Weddings – the Scottish way

Dear Sirs,

23
Having read the ‘Scottish Issue’ of your magazine and having just come back from my daughter’s
wedding in Scotland, I thought that your readers might be interested to learn of some of the customs
and traditions in Scotland today in connection with marriage. Some time after the engagement, the
young couple have to decide the day and date of the wedding. It is considered unlucky for the couple
to get married in the months of May and January and these are usually avoided. Many Scottish girls
think that it is a good idea that family and friends give the bride – to – be wedding present before the
ceremony. There are different customs related to the showing of presents in different parts of the
country. In the west of Scotland, for example, they are shown on the weekend before the wedding,
when home – baked cakes, sandwiches, tea, whisky and sherry are served. Another custom is the
blackening of the groom a few days before the wedding. Male friends get together and, leaving the
young man with only his underpants on, cover him with a mixture of oil, flour, coffee and other sticky
substances and throw feathers over him. Then they might tie him to a lamp post or take him around
the town in an open truck, hooting the horn. On the wedding day, after the ceremony at church, rose
petals or confetti are thrown on the bride and groom. They are also presented with silver horseshoes
which are believed to bring good luck. As they leave by car for the reception, the groom throws coins
out of the window, which are collected by small children. At the reception, the bride and groom are
the first to dance. Traditional music is played by a fiddler, an accordionist and a drummer. At the end
of the evening, the young couple is pushed into the middle to the song For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.
Then everybody joins hands and ends the celebration of the wedding by singing Auld Lang Syne.
Finally, the couple leaves for their honeymoon in their own car decorated with balloons, cans and old
shoes.
I hope your readers find these events interesting.

MOBILE MANIA SPREADS AS PHONES BECOME THE MUST-HAVE GADGET

1. More than 24 million Britons now own a mobile phone according to statistics
released yesterday. The growth expected to accelerate in the next few years as the
mobile phone overtakes the personal computer as the most used method of
accessing the Internet. No longer a tool only of well-heeled travelling executives and
plumbers, the mobile phone is now likely to be found in school satchels and shopping
bags in briefcases.
2. According to Vodafone, the market leader, of the 24 million cellphones in use, 11,9
million are pre-pay, many taken to banning the use of mobile phones in classrooms
and playgrounds.
3. The pre-pay services, using phone parts and proved the most popular with phone
users keen to keep their bills under control. The advent of „Pay-as-you-go“ schemes
has brought the mobile phone to millions who could not previously afford one or
failed the necessary credit ratings. The average pre-paid customer spends $198 a
year whereas a typical business customer receives a bill of $556 a year.
4. Around 40 percent of Britons now have a mobile, but by the end of next year,
analysts expect the figure to increase by at least half. Even then we will lag behind
Finland, where 71% of people own a cellphone
5. Already, analysts are predicting that within a few year more people will actually
watch the 6 o' clock news or Match of the Day on their mobile phone then on
television. The phone networks say more people are already using their mobiles at 6
o' clock each evening than the BBC claims are watching its evening news bulletin.

Bank accounts for young people

More and more young people aged 11 – 18 are opening a bank account. It seems that there is a
growing need, driven particularly by Internet shopping, for under- 18s to have access to a bank
account that provides a plastic payment card.
Banks realized long ago that it is important to catch their customers early. Once a customer becomes
familiar with a bank and has maybe a savings account and a current account, plus a handful of
monthly automatic payments for power, water, house rent and so on, it becomes awkward and time
– consuming to change to a different bank. Statistics show that very few adults choose to change
their bank when they have been with one for a few years.
It is possible for children younger than 11 to have a bank account in their name, with a bank book
that is supervised by their parents, but young people aged 11 and over, some banks offer a simple
current account with a card which can be used to pay for things in shops and online. The card can
also be used to withdraw cash. Many of these accounts earn interest and can be managed online.
Getting into debt is not allowed so overdrafts, loans and credit cards are not offered until a customer
reaches 18. Each time one of these cards is used, the account is checked to make sure there is
enough money in the account.
Helena, 16 years old, who has had a Firstline Bank Account since she was 14, summarises the
benefits of having a young person’ s account. ‘My mum
got tired of me asking to use her card, ‘she says. ‘I had pocket money, but I couldn’t use it online and
download music and films. Having my own card is a lot better than having to carry around a load of
cash, and if I lost it, I’d just cancel it and I’d still have my money.’ There are other benefits too Mark,
15, says, ‘I opened one at first because I saw an advert on TV for Delta Bank. They were offering all

26
these free gifts if you opened an account that month, so I did! I got some vouchers for a sports shop,
and bought some trainers I’d wanted for ages!
This may seem a rather light- hearted approach to opening an account, but as the youth bank
account market gets more competitive , banks spend increasingly large amounts on offers to get
their young customers’ attention. As a result, now is a great time to open an account if you are
between 11 and 18, especially if you spend some time searching for the best deal.
1. The first paragraph refers to an increase in
A. The places that accept a young person’s bank card.
B. The number of banks that offer young people bank cards.
C. The reasons for under – 18s to want a bank account.
2. What point is made in paragraph 2?
A. Banks try many ways to keep their customers.
B. Customers prefer to stay with one bank.
C. Banks provide better services not than in the past.
3. According to paragraph 3 , banks do not allow under – 18s to
A. borrow money from them.
B. use all of their cashpoint machines.
C. earn interest on current accounts.
4. Helena says that she
A. prefers using cash to using cards.
B. worries about the security of her card.
C. finds her card convenient.

EXTREME ART

Our weekly look at what's happening in the arts

1 The brilliant Chinese artist Liu Bolin has a fascinating new exhibition opening in London next week.
Bolin is known as the 'invisible man'. That is because in his photos he 'disappears' into the background.
The incredible thing is that the backgrounds are often very complicated. For example, in one photo he
blends into supermarket shelves full of fruit and vegetables. In another he stands in front of a wall that
is covered with hundreds of mobile phones. He has also disappeared outdoors in front of theatres, bus
stops and museums. Passers-by have walked past him without seeing him at all! To help him disappear,
his team of artists has to paint him carefully, from head to toe. This typically takes between thee and
ten hours, but some scenes have needed three or four days of preparation. At a conference, Bolin said
that his photos made a statement about his place in society. He told the audience that he had chosen
to become a part of his environment. The 41-year-old artist has certainly succeeded - it can often be
almost impossible to separate him from it!
2 Recently, a British rock group called Unfathomable Ruination played a series of concerts inside a tiny
cube. They went to the airtight cube and play until there was no oxygen left. Their first performance
lasted only 14 minutes because inside it was uncomfortable and hot. “These are extreme conditions
and we play extreme music”, said their guitarist. It was impossible to hear the music outside the box,
or to see anything happening. Unfathomable Ruination are not the only group to play gigs on unusual
places. In 2010 British singer-songwriter James Blunt played concert for 150 people in a plane at a
record-breaking height of 13,000 metres. The previous record was 11,000 metres, set by group

27
Jamiroquai. Blunt is a licensed pilot, but luckily he wasn't flying at the time. Meanwhile, singer Katie
Melua has record for deepest underwater concert, which she played 303 meters under North Sea.
Unsurprising, she said she would never forget experience. But it's Lady Gaga who has plans for possibly
most unusual place yet. 'I'm going to be the first recording artist in space!' she told reporters.
3 The unique London born landscape artist Stephen Wiltshire has just finished another of his amazing
panoramas. This time the drawing is a cityscape of Singapore, and, as always, it’s a masterpiece full of
incredible detail. For this work he took a brief helicopter ride to see the full city from the air. Then,
without the aid of camera, he drew the whole thing from memory in five days. And his memory serves
him well as his sketches are always incredible accurate. Wiltshire is autistic. He refused to speak when
he was small, but communicated through his sketches and art. The first word he said was 'Paper!’,
when they took away his drawing material to school. Now his art has taken him all over the world and
attending exhibitions of his work. His pencil is never far from his hand. After all, his motto is "Do the
best you can and never stop".

1. They call the Liu Bolin the 'invisible man' because he ...
a) doesn't appear in any of his photos
b) makes difficult for people to see him
c) doesn't like speaking at conferences

2. Liu Bolin ...

a) prefers complicated backgrounds
b) sometimes takes days to prepare for his photos
c) needs a group of artists to help choose backgrounds

3. Unfathombale Ruination's concerts in a cube ...

a) were silent inside the box
b) were seen by audience
c) were very difficult for musicians to play

4. James Blunt ...

a)played the highest concert in 2010
b) is the only person to have played concert in a plane
c) sang and flew a plane at the same time

5. Stephen Wiltshire ...

a) rembers what he sees very accurately
b) spends a long time preparing each picture
c) uses photos to help him draw cityscapes

6. For Stephen Wiltshire ...

a) it is impossible to talk to others
b) art has always been more than hobby
c) exhibitions are the only reason he travels

THE POWER OF TRICKS IN SUPERMARKETS!

You need some bread and milk You pop into the supermarket for two minutes. Half an hour later, you
leave the supermarket with a trolley full of food and a big hole in your bank account. What games do
supermarkets play to make us spend so much money?

28
The tricks usually start before you walk in. Outside the supermarket entrance, anybody who walks past
can smell warm, freshly-baked bread. That makes us hungry and ready to buy lots of food, not just
bread. Even if you never planned on going into the supermarket or buying anything, it’s such a great
smell that nobody can resist!
Now you're inside and,of course, you need somewhere to put your shopping. A small basket would be
fine, but all they have are trolleys. And of course the problem with a trolley is that it looks sadand
lonely with just one or two items inside. So our tendency is to fill it with something. In fact, supermarket
trolleys are actually getting bigger so that we buy more. In one experiment, researchers deliberately
made the trolleys double the size and customers bought 19% more!
Of course, many people shop in supermarkets because they think everything is cheaper than in other
shops. But most people only know the price of a few essential products- milk, bread, eggs, etc. So
supermarkets offer very cheap prices on these things but then have higher prices for other products.
One new trick is to put red stickers on products. Customers usually associate red stickers with
discounts so the red sticker attracts them, even when there is no reduction! Interestingly, this trick
appears to work more with men than with women.

There is a story behind the position of everything in the supermaket. For example, customers go only
to buy milk. So they put it right at the back, forcing you to go past hundreds of shelves full of other
products. The position of products on each shelf is also significant. The most expensive items are
usually at eye-level so you see these immediately. In fact, companies often pay supermarkets to put
their products in this important space. The exception is anything that might attract children. These
products are on lower shelves so that kids them.

Apart from what you see and smell in a supermarket, what about what you listen to? In most
supermarkets they have soft ,slow music. It's so relaxing that you slow down and spend more time
(and money) in the store. You also move more slowly when the supermarket is busy. Experts suggest
it's better to shop when it's quieter, on a Monday or a Tuesday for example.
And be careful with queues at the checkout. These are sometimes deliberate, to make you buy
something from the checkout shelves while you wait.

So next time you go into your local supermarket ,pick up a small basket, put some dance music on your
hadphones, ignore the red stickers and see if you can come out with just the things you went for.

1. Smells from the supermarkets bakery...

a) persuade people to go inside the supermarket.
b)are more effective with people who are already hungry.
c)make us buy more bread than we need.

2. Supermarkets prefer us not to use baskets because...

a) they don't usually have many.
b) they're too small.
c)people use them to hide things.

3. The text talks about supermarkets which use red stickers...

a) only for bargains.
b)to make products that are mainly for men.
c)so people think they're saving money.

4. According to the text, you would usually find a cheap breakfast cereal for adults...
a)on a shelf at eye-level so that everyone can see it easily.
b) on a shelf so that children can seethem more easily.
c) on a low shelf so that you don't notice them immediately.

29
5. According to the text,it's better for supermarkets if...
a)customers shop without hurrying.
b) the people who work at the checkouts are fast and efficient to avoid queues.
c) you shop at the start of the week.

Read four people’s comments about a recent TV series called Human Universe. Match the
statements (1–6) with the people (A–D). You can choose the people more than once.
A Harry

I just want to say how amazing I think this TV series is. I’ve seen three of the programmes so far and in
those three hours I learned more about science and the universe than I did in my whole time at school!
Somehow Professor Cox brings science to life in a way none of my teachers ever could. Mind you, he does
have the advantage of a lot of special effects to illustrate his points. I suppose it’s also the sort of language
he uses; it’s really accessible and he’s a brilliant storyteller. At school, the terminology was so difficult to
follow that I used to switch off immediately and I know I wasn’t the only one.

B Diana

What I like about this series is that the presenter doesn’t talk down to his audience, even though he knows a
huge amount about his subject. When I listen to him talking about space and the universe, I don’t feel like a
kid at school. I feel that he’s treating me like an adult. He seems to have a vast knowledge and you can tell
he enjoys sharing that knowledge. I’ve recorded the whole series. I particularly liked the programme about
training for a space mission where he went underwater and showed what the living conditions are like for
astronauts. It made me realise how difficult it must be to live in such cramped conditions. The series also
got me thinking about what scientists still don’t know or understand. It’s pretty scary to think about how
small a piece we really are in the giant puzzle of existence.

C William

Having watched the first programme of the series Human Universe I can’t wait until the next one. I’m
particularly impressed by the visuals. They add a great deal to the professor’s explanations, and that’s
something close to my heart. I enjoy playing around with computer graphics and I’ve done some work on
amateur films but watching this has opened my mind up to the possibilities of other career paths; perhaps
television work would be something I could aim for. Obviously, special effects are getting better and better.
Overall, I think it’s one of the best science series I’ve ever seen and it’s a great marriage between science
and art. I also love the way the professor sets his explanations against things we can see and understand by
showing us specific examples from different places around the world. Just brilliant!

D Charlotte

I missed the first couple of programmes and then a friend said I simply had to watch it. I’ve never enjoyed
science programmes very much; I’m much more of an arts person. Give mea series about books or galleries
and I’m hooked, but for me, science programmes are usually quite dull and I lose concentration quickly.
However, I must admit that this one is a bit special! I think it’s the combination of a compelling personality
(the professor looks much too young to be so clever, doesn’t he?) and some really interesting science. And
the beautiful location photography makes the programme particularly memorable. Although how long I’ll
remember the science is a different matter.

*Which person:

30
1 admires the presenter’s facility with words?...............

2 didn’t expect to appreciate the programme as much as he/she did?...............

3 has been motivated to contemplate a particular occupation by the programme?...............
4 has an unfavourable view of those who were responsible for his/her education?...............

5 believes the professor doesn’t act as if he is superior to his viewers?...............

Read the text. Choose from the sentences (A–F) the one which fits each gap (1–5). There is one
extra sentence.
Learning from how others learn

If we want to give our children the best education possible, it is sensible to look at the most
successful education systems in the world for ideas. Different countries have different ideas about
how to ensure that their children maximise their potential. It’s clear that no education system is
perfect.

(1) So, what, if anything, can we learn from them and are there any similarities between
them at all?

The two countries are South Korea and Finland. Korea has a one hundred percent literacy rate. Its
students achieve outstanding grades in all kinds of tests compared to those in other countries. How
do they do it? (2) Many are taught by private tutors after their normal lessons. Despite large
class sizes, there are no problems with discipline. Teachers are respected and teach in a traditional
manner with the children paying attention and obeying instructions unquestioningly.

Finnish children also do very well in comparison with school students in other countries. However, in
Finland, schools combine a short school day and extra after-school activities to develop individual
interests and motivate the children.

(3) There is much less stress in Finnish schools than in Korean schools but that doesn’t mean
that the teaching is unprofessional. Finnish teachers are highly educated and teaching is a well-
respected and well-paid profession.

So, what can we learn from this brief look at two countries who are able to educate their children
more effectively than we can? Firstly, children need a reason to learn. That may be pressure from
parents, peers and society as a whole to succeed. (4) Too often in our schools, we find
children who are uninterested in the lessons and parents who are uninterested in their progress.

Respect for teachers is also important. Politicians and journalists here would rather criticise teachers
than praise them and, as a result, members of the teaching profession lack the respect they receive
in other countries. (5) The opposite should be true. As we can see, Finland and South Korea
do share one great similarity. In both societies, people look up to teachers and recognise the
importance of the job they are doing. So, let’s have more respect for teachers, students and
education in general and, maybe, our children can be challenging those from South Korea and
Finland in the future.

31
A The answer appears to be by sheer hard work. Students are under immense pressure to
achieve their goals.
B These comparisons can hide faults and ignore positive aspects of poorly performing students
but, generally, they give us a good idea of which education systems work best.
C Alternatively, it could be an interest in what they are learning and a thirst for even more
knowledge.
D However, in most studies, two countries have a higher standard of education than others,
even though the way they educate their children seems to be completely different.
E The idea is that they will work hard because they want to, rather than because they are
forced to.
F The public are more aware of the length of teachers’ holidays than the enormous pressure
they are under in the classroom.

2. Every year my wife and I go on a camping holiday in France. Although this is something
we both really enjoy, this year I wanted to go somewhere I’d never been before and do
something exciting. We did some research and came up with the idea of going to the
US. We chose a kayaking holiday in the southern state of Georgia. Neither of us had
ever been kayaking before, but we managed to find a package which included lessons
for beginners.
Georgia is an amazing place; it’s a crossroad of different cultures and it has had a fascinating
and at times violent past. It is also a place of untouched natural beauty, with nature parks and
an unspoilt coastline. We went to Cathead Creek, an area rich in wildlife and scenery. Our
kayaking instructor was a friendly local called Frank. As my wife and I had never been kayaking

32
before, we found the first few lessons a bit challenging. In spite of this, Frank was always very
patient and he would constantly offer words of encouragement. After some practice, we became
more confident and realised it wasn’t that difficult. We also did a safety course and Frank made
us aware of any potential dangers, including the alligators in the swamp!

The couple found kayaking

a. difficult at first.
b. easy.
c. hard because their instructor was impatient.
d. dangerous.
3. Ellen MacArthur is the inspirational woman sailor who on February 7, 2005 broke the
world record when she became the fastest person to sail around the world. Ellen became
interested in sailing at the age of eight when she was taken aboard her aunt’s sailing boat.
This was an exciting experience for a young girl living in land-locked Derbyshire so far
from the coast.
Derbyshire is a place
a. near the sea.
b. near a river.
c. which is surrounded by land.
d. where Ellen went sailing.

4. A man from the office was going to give me a ride home one day, so we walked through
an empty lot with high grass to get to his car. A few minutes later, we were driving
along a major street when I felt some creature, going up my leg under my pants. Like
many women, I hate most bugs. However, whatever was there was climbing higher and
higher. I couldn't bear it any longer. I screamed to the driver to stop the car while I
frantically started to pull down my pants. He was surprised, but he screeched to a stop
next to a very busy sidewalk. I jumped out of the car. I pulled down my pants in front
of a rather surprised group of pedestrians. A very large grasshopper came out. I jumped
back in the car and we left again. It was embarrassing, but I was glad it wasn't a spider.
Why did the driver stop the car?
a) Because he saw her start to take off her pants
b) Because he wanted to buy something
c) Because she told him to do that in a loud voice
d) Because she was embarrassed

5. An 82-year-old accountant who has had a perfect driving record since passing his test
before the Second World War was banned for a year yesterday for travelling seventeen
miles in the wrong direction on a dual carriageway.
William Howarth became confused as he tried to avoid roadworks and set off on a road between
Oxford and Newbury in the wrong direction, magistrates at Abingdon were told.
Howarth, who uses a hearing aid and wears glasses, was driving in the fast lane of the
northbound carriageway as he travelled south causing several drivers to swerve on a dark
January afternoon. A police car in the correct lane drove alongside Howarth's car and stopped
him, but as the policeman climbed over the central barrier Howarth set off again. He continued
for another ten miles until a police road block forced him to stop.
He leaned forward as he tried to hear yesterday as Mr John Horn, prosecuting, said police had
received a number of 999 calls saying a car was travelling in the wrong direction.
How did the police learn about Mr. Howarth?

33
a) Men carrying out roadwork reported him.
b) Other drivers reported him.
c) A police car had to swerve to avoid him.
d) Another driver telephoned them.

6. When I opened the first 'Body Shop' in 1976 my only object was to earn enough to feed
my children. Today `The Body Shop' is an international company rapidly growing all
around the world. In the years since we began I have learned a lot. Much of what I have
learned will be found in this book, for I believe that we, as a company, have something
worth saying about how to run a successful business without giving up what we really
believe in. It's not a normal business book, nor it is just about my life. The message is
that to succeed in business you have to be different. Business can be fun, a business can
be run with love and it can do good. In business, as in life, I need to enjoy myself, to
have a feeling of family and to feel excited by the unexpected. I have always wanted the
people who work for 'The Body Shop' to feel the same way. I'd like to think there are
no limits to our 'family', no limits to what can be done. I find that an exciting thought. I
hope you do, too.
What is the writer's main purpose in writing this text?
a. To tell the reader her life story.
b. To introduce her ideas to the reader.
c. To explain how international companies operate.
d. To sell her book

7. The Earth’s temperature has increased by about one degree Fahrenheit over the past 100
years. This is referred to as global warming and it causes changes in the world’s climate.
For example, an increase in temperature will result in more rainfall, and flooding; this will
have serious effects on humans, wildlife and plants. Global warming is a serious threat to
our planet and scientists around the world are frantically working to develop new ways to
deal with this problem.
According to the writer, global warming is defined as
a. a gradual increase in the Earth’s temperature.
b. changes in the Earth’s weather.
c. rainfall and flooding.
d. a threat to humans, wildlife and plants.

8. The Western film industry today is closely associated with Hollywood, USA. But
Bollywood, its Eastern equivalent, has gained tremendous popularity and is considered
to be one of the largest film-producing industries worldwide. Bollywood got its name
from the merging of the words Bombay - the former name for the city of Mumbai - and
Hollywood. It is used to refer to the film industry based in that Indian city, not to all of
Indian cinema as is sometimes mistakenly believed.
Bollywood films are for the most part musicals and the language spoken is Hindi. Nevertheless,
due to their ever growing international popularity, more films are featuring Indian English and
some are now exclusively in English.
Bollywood films have been around since 1913 when the first silent film was produced in India
and by the 1930s over 200 films were produced annually. The industry has had peaks and

34
troughs over the decades; however, in 2000 there was a boom in Bollywood film popularity
around the world. A new generation of actors and actresses caught the public’s eye, in
particular, Aishwarya Rai – who is believed by many to be one of the most beautiful women in
the world.
Bollywood films are usually a three-hour dazzling extravaganza of music, song and dance.
Often the plot of the film is melodramatic; there are usually conflicts between characters, a lot
of drama and desperate villains trying to hurt the main characters. A Bollywood film will both
entertain and thrill you as well as provide you with considerable insight into Indian culture.
In line 14 what does dazzling extravaganza mean?
a. a cultural shock
b. an impressive show
c. an unsuccessful combination
d. a simple storyline

9. The evidence for harmony in the family may not be obvious in some households. But it
seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the
opposite of the popularly-held image of sullen teenagers locked in their room after
endless family fights.
An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more
harmonious than it has ever been in the past: more than half of 13 to 18-year-olds get on with
their brothers and sisters; and one in three has not argued with their parents during the past
twelve months. Eighty-five per cent of 13 to 18-year-olds agree with the statement 'I'm happy
with my family life,' while a majority said their lives were 'happy', 'fun' and 'carefree'. Only one
in ten said they did not get on with their parents.
'We were surprised by just how positive today's young people seem to be about their families,'
said one member of the research team. 'They're expected to be rebellious and selfish but actually
they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material things, and they worry about
whether their education is good enough for them. There's more negotiation and discussion
between parents and children, and children expect to participate in the family decision-making
process. They don't want to rock the boat.'

What is surprising about young people today, according to the research team?
a) They worry about being rebellious.
b) They think that their education is important.
c) They never negotiate with their parents.
d) They make most decisions in their family.

10. The Minister of Education was interviewed on the radio last week about his plans for
raising reading standards. He talked about the need to reach a wider public, speaking
enthusiastically about new ways to achieve this, such as by advertising on television, by
giving out books to babies, and, most significantly, through the cooperation of three
leading television soap opera producers, who have been persuaded to put into the plot
the message that reading is good for you.
When I was a student in the 1960s, I was taught that popular culture manipulated the working
classes, persuading them to listen to those above them, making them want less in life and be
happy with second best. Now, I believe that argument was a piece of terrible elitism. All those
who consume popular culture know exactly what its effect on them is. Today with our
knowledge of media, each of us makes a decision whether to 'buy in' and join the crowd, or stay
out and be different.

What was the writer told about popular culture as a student?

a) It reduced the working classes' expectations.
b) It was a bad influence on the whole of society.
c) It discouraged people from working hard.

35
d) It made the lower classes unhappy.
