Concert Report

On Sunday, the 2nd of October I went to the recital of Jamison Walker and Steven

Brancelone accompanying him. They performed a total of twelve pieces which varied in styles

and difficulty. Most of the songs came from the classical and romantic era. I loved the variety of

songs from folk to broadway to classical songs. The performance was simple in its design.

There was only a piano, music stand, and microphone on stage. The recital lasted about one

hour and the tone and control of his voice made it feel as though I was there for twenty minutes.

I left wanting to listen to more and would love to listen again.

A piece that I especially enjoyed was “What you’d call a Dream” from the Broadway

show Diamonds. I loved being surprised with a broadway piece and it really showed how much

control and range Mr. Walker had. The diction and tone sounded so full and he flowed through

each line so beautifully. I especially liked the chorus and the emotion he showed. He expressed

that this was a song that he enjoyed singing and I could see the difference in his emotions and

expressions. The song was really well done overall and I believe that he does not need to

change much for this to be a top performance.

I believe that a crowd favorite was the first folk song “Little Sir William” by Benjamin

Britten. This piece was fun and cheerful. The piano also had a very important part in this piece

adding to the soft hatred and joyful tone. The song was not very fast, but it reminded me of a

story book with dancers listening and dancing to the story that he was telling. The song had a

great story line and it seemed as though it was a child’s perspective.

A common flaw that I saw in most of the performance was the emotion. Although he had

done an amazing job expressing the emotions for “What you’d call a dream,” he did not show

much for the others. He did an excellent job at setting the tone for each piece, but the body

language and facial expression showed that he was more technically focused. The technicality

of music can only take a person so far but really feeling and enjoying the music will make it

spectacular.

This recital was amazing overall and I really enjoyed listening to simple and difficult

pieces. I have given many concerts and recitals in the past five years, but I lacked the

confidence to fully succeed during them. I was inspired by the performance he gave and I want

to be able to give a performance that is fun and easy to enjoy. I believe that no matter what

song Mr. Walker performs it would sound very classical and mature. I appreciate his control and

use of dynamics. I loved this performance and will definitely go again if he puts on another

recital.
