What is Listening?

 Listening is one of the macro-skills that every student must develop. Usually, people
seem to think that hearing and listening are basically the same thing. However, it should
be noted and understood that hearing and listening are NOT the same thing. How do
these two terms differ? Hearing is only a simple reception of sound. On the other hand,
listening is the process of making evaluation and judgment of the thought. Hearing is
done with the ears; listening is through the mind, more than just the ears. Hearing is
passive; listening is active.

 The Importance of Listening Skill

a. Improves relationships
b. Improves our knowledge
c. Improves our understanding
d. Prevents problems escalating
e. Saves time and energy
f. Can save money
g. Leads to better result

 The Levels of Listening

a. Ignoring
The lowest level of listening is called ignoring – not listening at all. If you are
distracted by anything while talking to a user, they can get the impression that you
are ignoring them. For example, while the user is speaking, you start a
conversation or interject a comment with another IT support tech
b. Pretend listening is most easily explained in the face-to-face conversation.
You're talking to the other person and they have that “backpacking in Brazil” look
in their eyes. On the phone it happens when you say things like “I see” and “OK,”
etc. while working on an unrelated email or playing a computer game.
c. Selective listening is when you focus your attention on some specific
information. It involves consciously or unconsciously choosing to listen to what is
relevant to you and ignore what isn't. It is a skill that anyone can develop and
improve
d. Attentive Listening. It is the process of listening attentively while someone else
speaks, paraphrasing and reflecting back what is said, and withholding judgment
and advice. When you practice active listening, you make the other person feel
heard and valued.
e. Empathic listening is a structured listening and questioning technique that allows
you to develop and enhance relationships with a stronger understanding of what is
being conveyed, both intellectually and emotionally.
 How to be a good listener?
1. Listen
 Don’t interrupt
 Let the speaker finish
 Concentrate on what is being said
 Make notes, if this helps
 Show the speaker that you are listening
2. Question

 Check understanding

3. Summarize

 Paraphrase what the speaker has just told you
