Description
Computer Software or just software is a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do and how to arrive at a desired result.
Software is also known as program. Unlike computer hardware, you could not touch or feel the computer software. Computer
hardware will not operate without the software.
The two types of computer software are: system software and application software.
System Software
System software are programs that the computer uses. These programs manage the computer's resources, including hardware peripherals
such as the printer, keyboard, mouse and other devices connected to the computer. They are also used as a base to launch
application software and make them work with the hardware resources. System software are programs behind the scene and
without user intervention in most situations perform other tasks such as: loading and running a program, protecting computer
from viruses and hackers, performing regular checks, controlling hardware devices connected to the computer such as the
printer, access sharing of memory resources and coordinating connected computers or networks. System software is a
collection of programs which includes the operating system, utilities and drivers.
1. Operating System is a program responsible for the coordination, management and sharing of hardware resources and tasks in the
computer. Popular operating systems are as follows:
Microsoft Windows XP is a very popular operating system made by Microsoft for desktop computers and laptop found in homes
and schools.
Microsoft Windows 7 is the new operating system made by people around Microsoft for desktop computers and laptop with many
changes additional features than Windows XP and its successor Windows Vista.
Macintosh Operating System is the operating system for the Macintosh computer. Macintosh is a series of computers made by Apple
Inc. The Mac OS X v. 10.5 "Leopard" is the latest Macintosh operating system which includes among others numerous functionality and
appearance changes. The operating system is popular because of its unique design and among many of its strengths are on the area of
graphics, music and video.
Linux is free software and was developed as an open source program with the principle wherein the source code can be freely modified,
used, distributed and opened by all. The principles of Linux were from the basic design of UNIX released in the 60s and 70s. Linux is
being used in many computer servers supported by big computer companies such as Dell, HP, IBM, Sun, and Oracle. It is being used as
an operating system for a variety of computer hardware including supercomputers and microcomputers. PlayStation video games also use
this operating system.
2. Utility Software is a program that performs maintenance tasks for the computer's resources, such as clean up and organizing files and
programs so they would load and work faster. Some operating systems include utility programs already, additional utilities can be installed
from other software vendors.
3. Anti-Virus Software is a program designed to detect, identify and remove computer viruses and other malicious software (malware)
from the computer. Computer virus is a program that has the ability to attach itself to a program, copy itself and infect the computer without
knowledge of the user. Computer viruses can spread only when it is carried to another computer by means of removable storage such as
USB flash drive, CD, DVD, memory card or external hard disks. Viruses can also be transmitted through a network or through the internet.
Anti-Virus programs are categorized as utility software, because they can be activated "behind the scenes" even when the user is doing

another computer task. Computer users who constantly access the internet and use removable and portable storage should have an
updated anti-virus program: Examples of Anti-Virus software are Norton Anti-Virus, Trend Micro Internet Security, Kaspersky Anti-Virus and
McAfee VirusScan.
4. Device driver is a program that allows a particular hardware device to work and communicate with the computer system. Each and
every device whether inside or outside of the CPU box requires this program to run and operate properly.

2. Application Software
Application Software
A computer becomes a valuable and efficient tool with the right programs or software that a user can use. Software will enable the user to write
letters, reports and other documents; performs various simple and complex computations; creates a record or a database of certain items; draw
and edit photos; design houses, machineries or vehicles; communicate to other people around the globe; listen to music or watch a movie; play
a single or multi-player computer game and much more. Examples of application software include the following:
