Activity Sheet
Note: Write all your answers on yellow paper. DO NOT write anything on this activity sheet.
1. Fill out the matrix below based on the foundations of literary criticism through the
classical works of Aristotle, Plato, Horace, and Longinus.
Aristotle and Plato were the master of Classical Criticism. Their principles
oppose each other. While Plato believes art and poetry ruins the moral of the
society, Aristotle believes these things provide knowledge to humanity. Plato is
an enemy of art and Aristotle is a lover. Horace did not agree nor disagree with
both of these Philosophers. He just proved his point that every literature should
have a sense of decorum. This means poetry should teach and please at the
same time. Longinus’ theory is similar in which he said that the goal of every
literature is to amaze and transport an audience, overwhelming them with its
irresistible power. Poets should produce poetry which is sublime. Sublime means
echo of a great soul.
3. Based on the sources of the sublime according to Longinus, make an analysis on the
sublimity of Filipino teleserye of your choice.
Sublime means “echo of a great soul.” The soul here refers to the soul of
the artist- the reason behind every great art. Using the lens of Sublimity, I
think the perfect Filipino teleserye to analyze is the infamous FPJ’s Ang
Probinsyano. In his theory, Longinus said that the effects of the sublime are
eased rationality, alienation, and deep emotional experience. All these things
are what FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano offered to its audience. It’s a great piece of
art. It addresses injustices in the society. It gives moral lessons to its
audience while entertaining them. According to Longinus, “Only the sublime
can truly teach, please and purify the audience.” With this, I beg to prove that
FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano is sublime.
4. Write a literary analysis of the lyrics of the song titled “Dili Tanan” by Rommel Tuico
using Formalism and Reader-response Theories.
The first thing I noticed in the song is the code switching or language
alteration. The first line of the song was written in English unlike the rest of
the lines which are in Filipino. The theme of the song is fit for entertainment.
The author used a third-person point of view. He also attempted to use the
idiomatic expression “bato-bato sa langit, ang tamaan ‘wag magalit” but
replaced the last phrase with “ang maigo dili mabukol.” Mockery can be
sensed in the song. It has a predictable pattern of reversing phrases such as
in “Dili tanan laki gwapo, Dili tanan gwapo laki.” The song, at first glance, may
seem senseless but with deeper comprehension, you will understand that the
author has a point. The song has a meaning the author wish to convey.
I often hear this song played in the radio of our neighbors and I can’t
help but laugh every single time. When the author said “Paghilom, paminaw
ug katawa na lang,” I felt that. The song is very entertaining and mind-stirring
the same time. People with low comprehension will find its lyrics only funny.
People with high comprehension will say that aside from being funny, the
song is also meaningful. I imagine every single thing the author describes. An
image forms in my mind each line. Overall, the song is logically entertaining.
