Adult male tapirs can weigh up to 700 lbs. There are four different species of tapirs. They
all have oval white-tipped ears, rounded rumps, stubby tails, and as many as 44 teeth.
Their food consists mainly of fruits and leaves though they have a tendency to eat soft
plant underwater if they live near a water source. They usually consume more than 85
pounds of vegetation in a single day. Their size and speed keep them free from most
predators.
Unfortunately, nowadays two of the four species of tapirs are on the endangered species list.
If the people cannot save them from threatening, the species will be fewer and rare in the
world. Help them to survive!

I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that
moment, everybody began to laugh
‘Let me be king. Look at my wonderful colours!’ said the beautiful parakeet. ‘No, no,’ said
the myna. ‘I can speak and talk to the other animals. I should be king.’ ‘And I have a fantastic
beak!’ said toucan, ‘I want to be the bird king.’ ‘I know,’ said the macaw. ‘Why don’t we
have a competition? The bird who can fly the highest will be the bird king.’
Everyone thought this was an excellent idea, especially the eagle. ‘Make me king now,’ he
said. ‘I am the strongest, and I can fly the highest.’ ‘Ah,’ said a little voice. ‘But you might
not win!’ ‘Ha ha!’ laughed the eagle. ‘You can’t beat me, little sparrow!’ ‘We’ll see,’ said the
sparrow.
The race began, and all the birds flew high into the sky. They flew higher and higher, and the
eagle flew the highest. ‘Ha! I told you!’ squawked the eagle. ‘I, I am the king!’ But the
sparrow was hiding under the eagle’s wing. Suddenly, he flew higher than the eagle’s head.
The sparrow was the highest bird of all! He won the competition! And the sparrow was the
new bird king.

penicillin. He asked Hodgkin to solve its structure. By 1945 she did her job. Hodgkin’s work

One day, a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who was a conceited creature,
boasted how clever she was. “Why, I know at least a hundred tricks to get away from our
mutual enemies, the dogs,” she said.
“I know only one trick to get away from dogs,” said the cat. “You should teach me some of
yours!”.
“Well, maybe someday, when I have the time, I may teach you a few of the simpler ones”,
replied the fox airily.
Just then they heard the barking of a pack of dogs in the distance. The barking grew louder
and louder – the dogs were coming in their direction! At once the cat ran to the nearest tree
and climbed into its branches, well out of reach of any dog. “This is the trick I told you about,
the only one I know”, said the cat. “Which one of your hundred tricks are you going to use?”.
The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick she should use. Before she could
make up her mind, the dogs arrived. They fell upon the fox and tore her to pieces.
Let me remind you my experience during an earthquake last week. When the earthquake

poles falling down to the ground, like matchsticks.
Then I saw a lot of rocks tumbling across the road. I was trapped by the rock. Even I could
not move my car at all. There were rocks everywhere. There was nothing I could do but left
the car and walked along way to my house, in the town.

King of Luwu had a very beautiful daughter. Her name was Princess Tandampalik. She was
very beautiful. Any man who saw her would fall in love with her. Everybody knew about her
beauty, including King of Bone. Bone was a kingdom that was far away from Luwu
Kingdom. Then, King of Bone paid a visit to Luwu in order to propose Princess Tandampalik
to be her daughter in-law. His son, Prince of Bone, was still single. King of Luwu actually
did not want to accept the proposal. According to the culture, he could not have a son-in-law
who lived very far from him. Otherwise, he would suffer from terrible diseases. But, he knew
if he refused it, kingdom of Bone would attack Luwu.
Many of his people would suffer. After that, King of Bone came to Luwu and talked about
the marriage proposal. King of Luwu said he needed time to decide. King of Bone understood
and went home. Suddenly, a bad thing happened. Princess Tandampalik was ill. She got skin
rash. The kingdom healer said the disease could infect others. The king then decided to put
the princess in a safe place. It was on a remote island named Wajo Island. The princess was
not alone. Some soldiers accompanied her. The princess was sad. But she knew if she stayed
in the kingdom, many people would be infected. So she was not angry with her father for
making her stay in a remote island.
Several days after Princess Tandampalik lived in Wajo Island, a cow came to her. The cow
was different from other cows. The skin was albino. The cow licked Princess Tandampalik's
skin. Amazingly, the disease was cured. Her skin was smooth again. Her beauty was back! In
the meantime, Prince of Bone was sailing in the sea. He landed on Wajo Island. He was so
surprised to see a very beautiful girl lived in such a remote island. "Wow, maybe she is an
angel," he thought. "Who are you, beautiful girl? Do you live here?" asked Prince of Bone.
Princess Tandampalik then explained everything. Prince of Bone had heard about her before.
He was so happy that he finally met her. He immediately brought Princess Tandampalik and
the soldiers back to Luwu Kingdom. The King of Luwu was so happy that her daughter was
cured. Not long after that, the King held a wedding party for her daughter and Prince of Bone.

the farmer lost his temper and in anger, he hit the boy and called him a son of the fish.
Suddenly the sky turned black and thunder and lightning roared and heavy rain fell
onto the valley. The rain was so hard and so long that the valley started to flood. The water
got higher and higher until the valley was no more. It had turned into a lake. People named
the lake after the farmer, Toba. The hill became an island in the middle of the lake, and it was
named Samosir Island. The son was believed to be the ancestor of Batak.

Last January, I went to Yogyakarta with my familly. The day was my school vacation.
At that time, we were from Makassar.
We departed from Makassar to Yogyakarta at 6.30 AM by plane. Fortunately, there
was no problem so we could arrive in Yogyakarta at 8.30 AM. Before we went to Borobudur
Temple, we had lunch at Sleman, DIY. We ate Oseng-Oseng Mercon. For my parents, it was
their first time trying Oseng-Oseng Mercon. They said it was delicious.
Then we went to Borobudur. It took more than one hour to go there from Sleman. At
1.00 PM, we arrived at Borobudur. We had to wait for the performance because it started at
2.00 PM. Before the performance started, we bought some souvenirs and tried to play
Angklung in the souvenir shop. At exactly 2.00 PM, the show started. Not only Angklung
performance, there were also traditional dance performances. We sang, danced and learnt to
play Angklung together during the performance.
After we watched the show, we went to Malioboroto get dinner. We ate Gudeg which
is traditional food made from jackfruit vegetable with coconut milk or shredded coconut. It
usually tastes sweet and salty, but there is another savory taste. In Gudeg, there is a variant of
Gudeg with fried tofu. That was the first experience eating Gudeg for some of my family.
After we had dinner, we went to our hotel which is not too far away from Malioboroto get
some rest.
The day after that, we started the day with getting breakfast at the hotel. Then we
departed to Malioboro at 7.45 AM. From the hotel, we just walked to Bringharjo Market
around five minutes. After we arrived, we walked around the market to explore. It was very
refreshing. There were a lot of various bags, cloths, sandals and accessories old at that time.
We also saw some snacks and traditional handycrafts. My brother and I tried to ride a
delman. After we spent enough time there, we had lunch and returned to Makassar.
We were very tired when we arrived in Makassar, but we had a lot of fun during the
cultural visit. It was very nice to go to Yogyakarta and I hope I can go there again sometime.
