ACTIVITY 1 (15 pts)

Comparative Text Analysis

In order to spot the similarities and differences of a contemporary literary work and a
previously written one, analyzing the themes, structures, and elements will be of
great help. For this activity, read the story “Ang Sundalong Patpat” by Virgilio Almario
by accessing the link → https://filipinolohista.wordpress.com/2012/06/12/ang-
sundalong patpat-ni-virgilio-almario/ and answer the questions that follow.

1. What is the plan of Sundalong Patpat?

Sundalong Patpat was set on a journey to find the missing rain. The people have
already prayed for the rain but still, the rain won’t pour. So, Sundalong Patpat with all
his might, started a long search to find a thing that doesn’t need finding.

2. How would you describe the Sundalong Patpat and his plan?

Little by little, he was looking for the missing rain. He was vigilant and did not lose
hope even though the horse was tired and sweaty. He faced his opponent with all of
the courage that he can muster. Despite his size, Sundalong Patpat should never be
underestimated.

3. Who are the characters who asked Sundalong Patpat of his whereabouts?
Describe each of them.

First is Tamarind – he was a little bit confused at first, Chicken – the one that
says the rain needs people to pray and call for him to pour, Mountain – the one who
tells Sundalong Patpat to go to the highest cloud, Cloud – the one that leads the
soldier to the ocean, Ocean – he says that rain was imprisoned by Pugita. These are
the characters that Sundalong Patpat did encounter while he was on his mission.
Pugita is the reason why the rain doesn't show up for a long time because she has
the pearl which contains the rain.

4. How did kabayong payat (thin horse) contribute to the success of the Sundalong
Patpat?

Throughout the journey, the thin horse is always present with Sundalong Patpat.
It was a tiring journey for sure but the horse remained with him through all the
breathlessness, tiredness, and sweat. It is safe to say that without the horse it would
be hard for Sundalong Patpat to fulfill his mission.

5. How did Sundalong Patpat free Ulan (rain) from Pugita (octopus)?
Sundalong Patpat rushed to Pugita’s cave. Pugita was surprised and Sundalong
Patpat quickly waved his sword stick. His moves were agile and strong, Pugita was
not able to defend himself from the sharpness of the blades, all his tentacles were
cut one by one. That is the defeat of Pugita, and Sundalong Patpat was able to
retrieve the Mutyang Perlas and free the rain.

6. What happened to the earth when Ulan was freed by Sundalong Patpat?

The earth rejoiced and the plants gradually bloomed and the green colors
returned to the mountains indicating that it was alive again with the return of the rain.
The rain brought the Earth to life again, thanks to Sundalong Patpat.

7. Are there symbolisms used in character portrayals and eventualities of the story
in relation to the Philippines as a nation? Support your answer.

Sundalong Patpat was the hero of the story. Just like many heroic people here in
the Philippines. Sundalong Patpat from the name itself seems so powerless and
weak. But it is the mind and the heart that is set for a main goal and purpose that
makes them strong and by that, they can make a change. One significant similarity is
that Sundalong Patpat was able to free the rain and made a big change on the Earth,
our Philippine heroes were able to free us also from colonizers that conquered our
country for so many years.

ACTIVITY 2 (5 pts)

1. Who are the characters in the flash fiction?
The reader and Simoun.

2. What is the point of view of the story? Cite evidence supporting your answer.
As a student who has little knowledge about El Filibusterismo. The context was
easily understandable. It is from the reader’s point of view; the question was
asked by Simoun who is known in the story of El Filibusterismo as being idealistic
and believing in social reform, looking forward to a revolution.

3. What is the conflict of the story? Why?

Conflict arises because considering it happens to a reader in modern times 21st
century and a fictional character who never really existed, met at a jewelry store
where Simoun works. That is why it is very interesting flash fiction. It just leaves
the readers something to think about.

4. Why is Simoun’s question described as weird?

If you are the one being asked that question it is really weird. Being approached
by Simon – a fictional character from a novel is what makes it flash fiction.

5. How is the story alluded to in El Filibusterismo?

Even the description of a jeweler is on point since, in El Fili, Simoun was indeed a
jewelry salesman. What he said was also accurate to his character as a man who
seeks social reform and revolution. The whole scenario was interesting.
