5. (i) Define the term 'urbanization'. (2marks)
Urbanization can be defined as growth in the urban population, often through migration from the countryside. (ii) Explain how urbanization occurs in the Caribbean. Include THREE causes in your response. (9 marks) Urbanization also occurs in the Caribbean and has resulted in things like large cities being created. Due to several reasons like natural increase, migration, employment etc., urbanization has taken place. Natural increase: in most cities the birth rate exceeds the death rate. Migration: People move to cities from rural areas, and this can be for many varied reasons like not enough jobs in rural areas, restricted social life, lack of schools and health services etc. Employment: Many times, people move because they would rather do jobs in the secondary sector like a retailer or manufacturing instead of Agri culturing in the rural areas. (iii) Discuss ONE negative effect of urbanization in ONE named capital city in the Caribbean. (3 marks) Port-au-Prince, the capital city of Haiti, is densely packed with close to 2million people. This is mainly because of migration by young people due to a lack of jobs in rural areas in Haiti. One negative effect of urbanization on Port-au-Prince would be the Agricultural Decline. Farm families cannot live off the job and therefore look for other jobs/sources of income. Therefore, more than half of the country’s food is imported. (iv) Outline THREE measures aimed at controlling urbanization in the Caribbean. (6marks) Three measures aimed at controlling urbanization in the Caribbean are: 1.
