O ne of the trending issues today, is the martial law. In 1972, the Philippines was
officially declared to be under martial law by the late President, Ferdinand Marcos. On this
month, September--the day of 21st was marked as the 50th anniversary of the said martial law.
September 21, 1972 became the official date that martial law was established and the day that the
Marcos dictatorship began. Probably, it is focus on “war”, and one of this is problem in the
country. FILIPINOS think deeper as what its positive or negative impact on the society.
Martial law is the imposition of direct military control of normal civilian functions of
government, especially in response to a temporary emergency such as invasion or major disaster,
or in an occupied territory. Governments to enforce their rule over the public can use martial law.
Martial law has been imposed during conflicts, and in cases of occupations, where the absence of
any other civil government provides for an unstable population. Typically, the imposition of
martial law accompanies curfews; the suspension of civil law, civil rights; and the application or
extension of military law or military justice to civilians. Marcos declared the martial law so that,
it is the way that the President to give peace and ordinance to the country but, there is also
affected just like the human right violation, because every individual have the right to live
without any reasons for them to fear. Martial law is declared either when there is near- violent
civil unrest or in cases of major natural disasters, however most countries uses a different legal
construct like “state of emergency”. The Philippines was under martial law that declared from
1972 to 1981 under the authoritarian rule of Ferdinand Marcos. Proclamation No. 1081.
(Proclaiming a state of martial law in the Philippines) that was signed on September 21, 1972 and
came into force on September 22. On the other hand, the disadvantages were the death of
democracy since the declaration had made people be silent for a moment and there was no
freedom of the press, the rights of the people to speak and share their opinions about the current
situation were totally defined and deprived.
Martial law brought back the love of our country and desire to have democracy of the one who is
power. Martial law opened the minds of an individual to move, to join, to fight, and to love
freedom. Human rights should not be sacrificed just to obtain a common goal. In order for us to
move forward, we should set our goals with due respect to the rights of the citizens and respect to
our own constitution. Although there is advantages and disadvantages of martial law. We do not
have the same sight about this. So, we must pray so that our problem in our country will be solve.
Just have faith in God. “The desire for freedom resides in every human heart. And that desire
cannot be contained forever by prison walls, or martial laws, or secret police. Overtime, and
across the Earth, freedom will find a way.” , as Bush, G., stated.
