ESTIMATING WALL FINISHES:

Sample Problem
The computed area and the number of coats and coverage of paint to be used for painting jobs are as follows:

Area of masonry surfaces: 750 square meters

Primer coat to be used: 1 coat with coverage of 30 sq.m. per 4 liters.
Top coat to be used: 1 coat with coverage of 40 sq.m. per 4 liters.

Area of wood surfaces: 900 square meters

Primer coat to be used: 1 coat with coverage of 25 sq.m. per 4 liters.
Top coat to be used: 1 coat with coverage of 35 sq.m. per 4 liters.

Solution:
Paints required for masonry surfaces:

a. Convert the coverage of the primer coat to its equivalent rate per liter.

Coverage per liter = 30 sq.m / 4 li

Coverage per liter = 7.5 sq.m / li.

Primer required = 750 sq.m / 7.5 sq.m / li.

Primer required = 100 Liters

b. Convert the coverage of the top coat to its equivalent rate per liter.

Coverage per liter = 40 sq.m / 4 li

Coverage per liter = 10 sq.m / li.

Primer required = 750 sq.m / 10 sq.m / li.

Topcoat required = 75 Liters

Paints required for wood surfaces:

a. Convert the coverage of the primer coat to its equivalent rate per liter.

Coverage per liter = 25 sq.m / 4 li

Coverage per liter = 6.25 sq.m / li.

Primer required = 900 sq.m / 6.25 sq.m / li.

Primer required = 144 Liters

b. Convert the coverage of the top coat to its equivalent rate per liter.

Coverage per liter = 35 sq.m / 4 li

Coverage per liter = 8.75 sq.m / li.

Primer required = 900 sq.m / 8.75 sq.m / li.

Topcoat required = 102.9 Liters
Topcoat required = 103 Liters
Translating the quantities of paint into 4-liter cans:

a. Masonry Primer = 100 li / 4 li. per can

= 25 cans

Masonry Topcoat = 75 li / 4 li. per can

= 19 cans

b. Wood primer = 144 li / 4 li. per can

= 36 cans

Wood Topcoat = 103 li / 4 li. per can

= 26 cans

Translating the quantities of paint into 16 -liter cans:

a. Masonry Primer = 100 li / 16 li. per can

= 6.3 cans
= 6 cans at 16 liters plus 1 can at 4 liters

Masonry Topcoat = 75 li / 16 li. per can

= 4.7 cans
= 4 cans at 16 liters plus 3 can at 4 liters

b. Wood primer = 144 li / 16 li. per can

= 9 cans

Wood Topcoat = 103 li / 16 li. per can

= 6.4 cans
= 6 cans at 16 liters plus 2 can at 4 liters
