Dear Parents,
We welcome you most sincerely to the Grade One experience. We are all excited and looking forward to a wonderful
year. Each year, we give our class a name and this year is no different. This is the year of the Diamonds and we expect
them to shine as brightly and beautifully as their name implies. Your teachers for this year are: Mr. R. Foster (Yeah!) and
the young girl, Miss B. Hall. Mr. Foster will teach Mathematics, Spelling and Integrated Studies and Miss Hall will teach
Language Arts to include English, Phonics, Comprehension and Creative Writing. Both teachers will teach Oral Reading,
Mental Ability and Reasoning, Penmanship and Reading Comprehension. Please write your child’s name boldly on the
outside of the front cover of all text books.
You have in hand our class newsletter The Grade One Times which we will use to keep you abreast of what’s happening
in our class. Along with the newsletter, you will get our regular timetable, Scope and Sequence and our test and exam
timetable. (Hard copies are for new parents only.) We ask that you store them carefully and refer to them whenever the
need arises. You will soon be invited to our class meeting. At that time, we will tell you all about the activities which we
plan for the year.
This is the only time that hard copies of the newsletter and other documents will be given. After this, we will
communicate with you through our school communication system called RENWEB. All parents who have been with us
for a while should already be on the system and all new parents are asked to use the link that you have been given to
get registered on Renweb. Any other parent, who, for one reason or the other is not on the system, is asked to get the
link from the office and ensure that you are connected. To communicate with us, please use the number 876 952 2273
for urgent messages or, via email, at [email protected]. Emails will be answered after school, usually at night.
Very soon, you will be sent an invitation to join our class on Google Classroom. We will be posting important
information there throughout the year, so, as soon as you see the invitation, please take action.
You will be sent a notification via the children’s Homework books when a message or information from the class has
been sent either via RENWEB or Google Classroom. Every Monday, a weekly homework sheet will be placed in your
child’s homework notebook. Please refer to it to see what has been given for homework each day.
Let us just highlight a few things on the timetable. Children’s Own or Observer- $35 weekly
Art Mondays Library Usually Tuesdays- books to be returned on Mondays.(to be advised)
Music Wednesdays Spanish Tuesdays and Thursdays P.E Fridays School ends 2:15p.m.
Weekly Spelling/Vocabulary tests Wednesdays Clubs Fridays…The clubs are Reading, Brownies, Cub Scouts,
Environmental, 4H. Discuss with your child and choose. Admission based on space.
The test and exam timetable never changes unless there is some irregular occurrence. Therefore, if the tests begin on a
Thursday, those tests will always be Spelling and Creative Writing as shown on the timetable. Integrated Studies has
three (3) components. They are Science, Social Studies and Religious Education. Therefore, when you see on the test and
exam timetable Integrated Studies-Science. That does not mean two (2) different subjects. It means that the Science
component of Integrated Studies is to be tested. Got that that? Great! You will be told by the Spanish teacher when
tests/exams will be done.
For the first week of school we will be doing the Grade One Individual Learning Profile (GOILP). That is just a readiness
test which all students entering Grade One in Jamaica are required to do. It is nothing for you to be concerned about.
Our children always do extremely well on it.
There is one very important thing for you to do before September 23, 2022. You have to complete a registration
form for your child. This is a Ministry of Education document which is done at the Grade One level. We have the forms
at school. Come in and complete them in the library. Please get the form from the office and then proceed to the
library to fill it in. You will need the following:
Please ensure that you have all of the documents and that they are notarized. They are to be submitted to the ministry.
After they have been processed, your child will get a Student Registration Number (SRN) which you will use whenever
your child has some involvement with the ministry e.g. for external assessments and exams.
That’s all for now. We look forward to an exciting year with the Diamonds.
