Vocabulary Quiz (9/11: A Dark Day) Tuesday, Sept. 9th Math Test (Measurement) Wednsday, Sept. 24th Early Release Day Friday, Sept. 26th Emergency Day (NO SCHOOL)
Curriculum In Science, In Science, we will be finishing Unit 1 Scientists at Work (Unit Test 9/12/14) and beginning Unit 4, The Nature of Matter. The Beachland Elementary School Science fair will be held in December. Details will be coming home in weekly folder soon. In Reading, students are learning sequencing and how to utilize context clues while reading. Every other Monday we will have a list of vocabulary words, which will include a homework assignment due Thursday of that week. A vocabulary test will follow on Friday. Every other week students will receive a reading comprehension test, assignments, and continue to take AR tests after each book. We will begin FAIR testing (computerized reading test) this month in the computer room. As part of the Collins Writing program, students are writing each day and learning the correct proofreading marks needed for corrections. Each Friday there is a quiz for grammar and conventions. These weekly quizzes will be kept in their writing notebook along with their personal dictionaries. This month students will be writing a fictional essay.
As far as Math, we have been learning about units of measurement, both customary and metric, and how to convert one unit to another. We will be having a chapter test on Tuesday, September 9. Students were introduced to two websites that well be using in class, Khan Academy and Moby Max. These are important tools in helping students become more proficient in math. They can login from either home or at school. Do you know what an Interactive Notebook is? Ask your child to explain how they are using it in math. Were psyched to be using this throughout the year in deepening students understanding of math concepts.
In Social Studies, we are completing our study of maps this week. We have learned about many different kinds of maps. At school, each student is creating a detailed map from their home to their favorite place in Vero Beach. This map is due on Friday. In addition, for the next two weeks we will be reading and discussing in great detail the events that happen on September 11, 200l. We will be reviewing the reading strategy of sequencing as we create a timeline of the events of that fateful day. Please help your child review the vocabulary terms for this unit.
PTA Membership/3 for Me Program If you have not already done so, please join the PTA. We hope to have 100% participation! We aren't asking for 3 hours a day, we aren't asking you for 3 hours a week, we aren't even asking you for 3 hours a month. We are asking you to pledge ONLY 3 hours during the entire 2012-2013 school year to help us at BEACHLAND ELEMENTARY! Imagine ALL that we could accomplish if every family volunteered just 3 hours a year. That would equal out to be about 1,500 volunteer hours! If you can pledge "Three for Me" email Paige Visser, PTA Volunteer Chair at [email protected] and sign up. Tell us when you are available to volunteer and what areas and events you are interested in participating in. All family contributions to the school are valued and make a difference. Three for Me helps the school organize and effectively communicate its needs to parents and welcomes all families into the school as partners in creating a better learning environment for children. By making the Three-for-Me promise and dedicating three hours of your time to the school over the course of the school year, you can strengthen the partnership between home and school for your childs benefit.
Accelerated Reader Please encourage your child to be reading every night at home. Remember that each child must read at least 30 minutes each day. As our former principal, Mrs. Carol Wilson said, Today a reader, tomorrow a leader!
Scholastic Book Order Please remember if you are interested in ordering from Scholastic to send in your check made payable to Scholastic Book Club no cash please. All orders are greatly appreciated and also allow our classrooms to earn free books!
Helpful Websites The Parent Portal for eSembler is open. If you havent done so already, you can register so that you can view your childs grades online. You can find the link by going to www.indianriverschools.org and click Parents/Students. We have a fifth grade blog, which you can find at fintasticfifth.blogspot.com. Its updated regularly, and you can find important and helpful information. You can also sign up to be notified by e-mail when the site is updated. Have you registered on our homework site yet?? Its called School Notes, and you can find it at new.schoolnotes.com/mrk/. You can also sign up to receive notifications there as well. It is updated daily.
Birthdays & Lunch with Your Child If youd like to celebrate your childs birthday with a treat, heres all you need to do! If youd like to send in a sweet treat, please make sure that there are enough for your childs homeroom. If you plan on dropping them off at school, our lunch time is from 1:00-1:30. Fifth graders LOVE it when family members come and eat lunch with them!! If you plan to do so, we just wanted to remind you that that special time is for family members and your child. Other students are not allowed to eat with you. Its a school wide rule, and we appreciate your cooperation!!
Box Tops Have you ever looked on the bottom of a Kleenex box? Well start looking. Kleenex is just one of MANY Box Tops participants! Beachland Elementary is a BIG supporter of Box Tops For Education. We would like to extend an invitation to all parents, students and teachers to help us reach a goal of $2,000 from Box Tops this year. Each Box Top is worth $.10 or more. The teachers use these monies to provide for children at Beachland. Its easy. All you have to do is look for participating products; just look for a Box Tops symbol on the box or package. You will be amazed at how many participants there are. One of the newest ones is Huggies; and some of the most common are Ziploc, General Mills, Hefty and Pillsbury. So clip those Box Tops and send them in! We appreciate all donations! Thank you to Mrs. Stawara for sponsoring this program.
Dismissal Procedures We discourage early dismissal but if you have to pick your child up early, it MUST be written in the agenda. If you are changing your way home, that too must be in the agenda or contact Ms. Brown via email at [email protected] or call her at 564- 3300. We ask that you call before 2pm. Classroom phones will go directly to voicemail so you must contact the front office. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your childs teacher.
