What is relationship, connection and network?

Humans are all connected to each other no matter where we are in this world.
Each of us is a part of a one big whole we call our universe. Each of us perform
different functions but we are aiming for the same goal which is to gain connections
with people around us.
It is basic for every human being to interact with each other. We believe that
no man is an island. No one can survive in pure isolation hence we need people not
only to talk to but to do and share all sort of things we’d like to do and share. In other
words, we need to connect with people to make us happy. Connection means
sharing and learning. When we connect we want to share things so that we feel
happy & can make other people happy too.

What Is It

Identify Connections, relationship and networks

A network is a group of people or organizations that are closely connected and that
work with each other to achieve connectivity as a purpose. Creating a network is significant
for various reasons.
It can be formal or informal. The former involves structured meetings or processes
while the latter are the relationships you develop and build overtime with & colleagues in
form of facts, gossip or rumors about issues affecting your workplace.
It creates relationships with other people with this, people tend to adjust or adapt
more easily to changes that may happen within their surroundings. It provides exchange of
knowledge and information. This manifests how learning &through linkages and connections
work for individuals & organizations especially in the advent of technology in the 21st century.
Moreover, professionalism is one important factor to consider when we establish
relationships in networks.
Having social connection can help us get rid of anxiety and depression.

ILLUSTRATE HOW THE BRAIN OR
2 NEURAL NETWORKS WORKS
HUMSS_MCT12 IIg-i-2

What I Need to Know

The brain is one of the biggest and amazing organ in the human body. It is compose
of billions of nerves that communicate with other nerves via synapses.
It is the main organ of the human body. On the other hand, the spinal cord makes up
the central nervous system.

What’s In

Instruction: Define the following terms related to our previous discussion. Write it in your
notebook.
1. Interaction
2. Society
3. connection

5
Objectives: This lesson will help you:
1. To explain how the brain or neural network do its job.
2. To identify the different parts of the brain.
3. To know the function of the different parts of the brain.

What’s New

Instruction: Have a quick look of the picture below and read the succeeding paragraphs
carefully.

Neural networks: Understanding the Concept

https://medium.com/predict/artificial-neural-networks

What is it

Our brain is composed of nerve cells which we call neurons. Its role is basically to
spread messages from one nerve cell to another. These nerve cells are set together in our
brain to form a network of nerves. These nerves pass just like electrical impulses i.e. the
excitation from one neuron to the other.

The dendrites take the impulse at the end button called synapse of the next neuron.
Dendrites are the one who take the impulse to the nucleus of the neuron which is called
soma. At this point the electrical impulse start to move and passed on to the axon. The axon
6
is longer branch among the dendrites which carries the impulse from soma to the synapse.
The synapse then, passes the impulse to the dendrites of the second neuron. Hence
bringing about a complex network of nerve cells or neurons in the human brain.

Parts of the human brain

Computer animation credit: https://askabiologist.asu.edu/parts-of-the-brain

Three Main Parts of the Brain

a. Cerebrum- is the largest part of the brain; has right & left hemisphere. It is divided into 4
lobes namely:
• frontal lobe- responsible for speaking, emotions & personality
• parietal lobe-responsible for interpretation of language, words, sense of
touch, temperature & others
• occipital lobe-interprets vision
• temporal lobe- responsible for understanding language memory,
hearing, sequencing & organization.
b. Cerebellum-function to coordinate muscle movements
c. Brain stem- is the relay center connecting the cerebrum & cerebellum. It performs
autonomic functions such as breathing, heart rate, temperature, wake and sleep cycles,
digestion, sneezing, coughing, vomiting and swallowing.

A. There are 3 main parts of the brain, the cerebrum, cerebellum and
the brain stem.
B. The brain controls how the body function.
C. A neuron is also called a nerve cell.

What’s New

Instruction: List down all the social media sites that you know locally and internationally.
Write it in your notebook.

What is It

Instruction: Read carefully the paragraphs given.

Relationship of Neural Networks with Social Networks
The brain function is like that of the people in the society. The society is made
up of various types of people with various attitudes and characters. They desire to
live happily & peacefully to function well in the society in which they live in. They
need to connect & link with other people. In other words, interaction and
9
interconnectedness are basic with humans like us. Just like our human brain, which
regulate the whole system of the body, each part has its own function but one part
cannot function effectively without the other, that is why they need to connect with
each other to give a person a perfect body function. The same with people each of
us must stay connected with one another to sustain a well-functioning and happy life.
We cannot live in pure isolation; hence we always stay connected.

People nowadays are more inclined to social media like facebook, instagram,
twitter and others. We even can call ourselves “on- line society” of the 21st Century
because of our great love & admiration with the internet world. It is because we can
do a lot of things on-line. A lot that it become a basic need for people.

Just like our brain, which fundamentally regulate body function, people using
the internet are now regulated by the so called cybercrime laws that will protect the
people using it, to sustain peace otherwise conflict may arise.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Social Networking

Most people nowadays use various types of social media platform. Do you think the
use of social media makes your life productive? or does it make your life complicated? or
even a waste of your time? Here are some advantages & disadvantages of using social
networking?

What Is It

SOCIAL NETWORK AND YOURSELF

Everyone has the right to connect from other people all around the world. The idea
was seemed to be impossible before, now happened to be within reach of everybody. While
people enjoy the beauty of the internet with its full glory, only few is aware of its
disadvantages it creates. By the power vested on technology with social media accounts as
weapons, almost everyone has the power to abuse the use of freedom of expression. This
abuse has pushed through judgements, bashing statements, edited photographs and
merciless criticisms that fall into the area of cyber bullying.
The relationship built between oneself and social networking sites have found a way
into seeking self-validation through reactions from other people. Take for example you
upload your picture in social media that tends to show reactions from people by liking or
disliking it and giving undesirable comments. They are into thinking of some standards of
beauty that is impossible for a normal person to achieve hence, falling themselves into
depression.
Establishing connection between oneself and social network is not bad, but one
should set limitations for what is real from what is expected. Use the social media wisely and
use those links that can uplift your well-being and go through life normally.

SELF-ESTEEM AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Self-esteem means how one sees himself or herself. It may be described as how one
respects himself or herself. According to studies, self-esteem increases in a person’s
childhood years but it may decrease when one reaches the age of adolescence. Another
team of researchers have found out that low-self-esteem is more common in girls than in
boys. They also reported that those people whether male or female who spend a lot of their
time in social media has also lower self-esteem. This may be because of the social
standards set forth by people in the social media world. Girls who always use the internet
may have higher rates of suicide because of cyber bullying particularly if they have not
reached the standard set, which in turn develop anxiety and depression that leads to that
miserable thing of ending their lives.
The use of social media by anybody whatever stage of life you belong must be
regulated in order to avoid dangers of suicide. One must develop self-confidence by treating
yourself well, believing that you can do things better and believing that God is always there
to give us a helping hand.

What Is It

QUICK READING
Social Relationship

Interaction is communication. It is an exchange of messages between two or more

people. Talking to people allows us to think on ways how to reply in the best possible way.
When we interact we socialize. Our relationship and interaction with other people will
basically affect and shape the process of how we think. This is because our behaviors are
influenced and affected depending on whom we are interacting with. Thus we can say that
social relationship greatly affects one’s thinking, behavior & interaction.

One of the most significant reason why social relationship affect & influence
someone thinks is because of their peers. Take for example of young people of today’s
generation on the way they dress, they behave & respond is a lot different from older people
of the past generation. This is because of the people that surrounds them and may be
because of the changes of the time in which one will adapt what’s basically is acceptable in
the present generation.

Social relationship also affects our physical health in the same way smoking, high
blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and other common diseases. Studies show that people
with strong social relationship tends to increase its survival rate regardless of age, gender
and country of origin. Hence social interaction is paramount but we also have to be careful of
whom we are interacting with.

where students play a role in order to make it a better place to live in. Therefore, everybody
men or women, young or old, professionals or non-professionals should contribute good
things for the society. Studying is the main responsibility of students for they are the future
of our country. We need to teach them good values and be God-fearing people to make
them better citizens of our country.

THE 21ST CENTURY YOUTH & ITS MISCONCEPTIONS

The greatest misconception about youth today is that they are blinded with social
media. This stereotype has grown into a full blown argument questioning the capability of the
youth to serve the nation. This is to signify the claim the youth is hope of the fatherland. Are
they really hopeless?
Talking about the youth engagements on nation building, there are youth
organizations that set foot to lead and to empower the youth through congresses that
stimulate the legislative part of the government. This will enable the youth to practice their
diplomacy skills and attest their standpoints to certain national issues. In this manner, youth
will have the chance to voice out their opinions and to create answers to the calling problems
of the country.
The stereotype sets by the society is half true for the youth these days because the
social media. However, the word “blinded” makes it half false for there are other youth who
use social media as a platform to encourage everyone to help their respective community in
the smallest yet effective ways possible. It could be through proper disposal of garbage,
responsible way of using plastic products and by being hardworking students.

What Is It

QUICK READING

Roles in the Community

There are a lot of social groups that we belong and in turn we have status & role to
fulfil. Status is a kind of position we have in a group while role is the part we play in the
community in which the society expects us to perform. Some of us play various roles at the
same time. For instance, a woman may have the status of a wife, and because of this she is
expected to fulfil the role requires for a wife to take care not only of his husband but also of
his children.

On the other hand, one may play several roles at the same time like, besides being a
wife, you are also a mother and at the same time an employee or an aunt for others. A
student could portray not only a single role of going to school but also another role like being
a brother or a sister to someone. However, this overlapping statuses and roles are common
for people. Being a member of a social group gives us a set of statuses and roles that lead
people to know what to expect of us for that role. No matter how many roles we portray we
have corresponding responsibilities to it. We need to take care of those roles for us to
perform them effectively otherwise role conflict may arise.
