exposure and shall be placed so that the plane of the IQI is normal to the radiation beam. 1
 Use of damaged or bend IQI strictly prohibited.
 As far as possible IQI shall be located on source side of weld, where this is not practical provide
film side with lead marked ‘F’ adjacent to IQI.
 Selection of IQI Shall be used for each applicable thickness as per ASME Section V Table T-276
spanned by minimum to maximum thickness of the area of interest to radiographed. For Film

7.2. IDENTIFICATION MARKS ON FILM:

Each radiograph shall be identified uniquely so that there is a permanent correlation between the
part radio graphed and the film. The following permanent identification marks shall be provided on
each film for traceability, namely, LINE No., JOINT No., DIA X THICKNESS , WELDER No., XR-
No, FILM SEGMENT, DATE. Repair/Reshoot/Retake identification shall be indicated by lead letters

7.3. GEOMETRIC UNSHARPNESS(Ug):

The source to film distance shall be maintained in such a manner that the geometric un sharpness
does not exceed the specified limits. Geometric Un sharpness (Ug) is determined by the formula
Ug= F d / D where,
F: Source size in mm (Maximum projected dimension of radiation source or Diagonal distance for

7..4.1. Single Wall Technique-Panoramic:

In the single-wall technique, the radiation passes through only one wall of the weld (material),
which is viewed for acceptance on the radiograph. This technique is preferably used for
higher diameter pipes where safe accessibility permits locating the radiation source at the
center of the circumferential weld. A film overlap of 25 mm on either side shall be provided to
demonstrate the continuity of the welds. The minimum width of the film shall be of 3 “,
minimum of 3 pentrameter 120 deg apart shall be placed on film side for this technique.
7..4.2. Double Wall Technique:
This technique is generally used for radiography of piping when Single wall technique is not
practicable.
7..4.3. Single Wall Viewing:
This technique shall be used in which the radiation passes through two walls and only the
weld on the film-side wall is viewed for acceptance of the radiograph. A minimum of three
exposures at 120 deg to each other shall be taken for a complete coverage of the weld
circumference. A film overlap of 25 mm on either side shall be provided to demonstrate
7..4.4. Double Wall Viewing:
This is applicable for radiography of pipes less than 3” in nominal diameter. In this technique
the radiation passes through two walls and the weld in both walls is viewed for acceptance.
For welds, the radiation beam may be offset from the plane of the weld at an angle sufficient
to separate the images of the source-side and film side portions of the weld. For a complete
coverage of the weld circumference at least two exposures at 90 deg to each other shall be
taken.
The pentameter shall be placed on the source side (one number)
As an alternative, the weld may be radio graphed with the radiation beam positioned so that
the images of other walls are superimposed. When complete coverage is required, a
minimum of three exposures taken at 120 deg to each other shall be made for each joint.

attached to the back of each film holder during each exposure to determine if backscatter is
exposing the film, if a light image of the letter “B” appears on a darker background of the
