Speech preparation outline:

“What is the process of writing lyrics?”

Introduction
I. Have you ever wondered if you have lyrics writing skills?
a. If you have them, then I sincerely congratulate you! We already have at least one
thing in common.
b. If not, then everything is fine. I will help you understand how the lyrics are written.
II. At the moment, I have the authorship of 5 songs. I would like to share with you how this
process usually goes.
III. I have put together a data about "how to write lyrics" compiled from articles about reputable
lyricists, as well as from my own experience.
IV. In my speech, I would like to tell you about: my own experience of writing songs; about how
popular musicians create their own lyrics; and finally, about the step-by-step process of
writing lyrics.

Body
I. My experience of being a songwriter.
a. For me a song begins with an inspiration, that is the key to writing a whole song. The
process of writing lyrics takes me about 6-7 hours without breaks. But with
inspiration I have a great desire to finish the song within this time.
b. Having ideas is also a crucial factor in writing lyrics. The ideas you are using in a
song should be focused on specific aspect. In my case, these are love songs. Focusing
on one aspect, you need to come up with the first line of lyrics. Next, you will need to
write lines of lyrics that are related to the first one without departing from the general
content. This way the lyrics will look cohesive. For example, if the lyrics are with a
love context, then this direction should be followed until the end of the process.
c. With the inspiration and the collection of ideas, it is possible to write the lyrics to the
song in less than one hour.
i. The structure of lyrics can consist of standard, double and triple rhymes.
Double rhymes mean that there are two parts in a line that rhyme with two
parts of the next line. Likewise with triple rhymes.
Transition (Listening to musical artists has a beneficial effect on understanding how lyrics
should be constructed.)

II. Career path of authoritative lyricists.

a. Bob Dylan
i. Bob Dylan is the first lyricist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature
(Wheeler, 2016). According to “Bob Dylan finally” (2017), he won this
award for "for having created new poetic expressions within the great
American song tradition". Not all songs are able to push the listener to think
about the meaning of the lyrics, as the songs of Bob Dylan do. The reason is
that Since his lyrics are ambiguous, playful, and allusive (Wheeler, 2016).
ii. According to Howard Sounes, Bob Dylan's biographer, such artists as The
Beatles and the Rolling Stones took a cue from Dylan and tried to focus the
themes of their songs on serious topics. However, the difference between
Dylan and these artists is that he simply didn't try. He was writing songs on
serious topics because he had a great mind (Wheeler, 2016).
b. Jay-Z
i. Jay-Z is an American rapper who has a huge influence in the hip-hop industry
due to the high quality of his lyrics. Jay-Z's lyrical skills have led him to hit
number 1 albums more often than Elvis Presley did. In his early career, he
shared his desire to become a rapper with such provocative rhymes that would
help him become the king of Hip-Hop (Kakutani, 2010).
ii. On the example of Jay Z, we can see how to successfully write lyrics about
life experience. In his case, he describes life experience on the streets using a
list of traditional literary devices such as hyperbole, double meanings, puns,
alliterations, and allusions. He also skillfully uses metaphors and an
unexpected flow of words in his lyrics to come up with rhymes (Kakutani,
2010).
c. To sum up, successful lyricists focus on serious topics in their works and skillfully
use literary means.
Transition (Now, based on the said information, we can gradually draw up a guide on how
to write lyrics for songs.)

III. Steps how to write own lyrics:

a. Choose a topic for the lyrics. The topic can be both serious and about everyday
things. The main thing is to focus on one topic.
b. Wake up the desire to write lyrics. Look for inspiration in everything that surrounds
you.
c. Gather ideas focused on a chosen topic. Brainstorm and sort through all the possible
knowledge and facts that you have.

d. Start with the first sentence, then try to come up with a continuation for the lyrics,
Respect the rhyme structure. During the process, literary means can be used to make
the content of the lyrics seem saturated with deep messages.
e. End the lyrics at the point where you think you've exhausted your ideas or think the
song's lyrics are complete.

Conclusion
I. To conclude, writing lyrics is an interesting form of expression of feelings and thoughts. By
understanding the step-by-step process for writing lyrics, we can come up with lyrics based
on our own experience.
II. In our own lyrics, we can share important topics that concern us. And for this, we can use
literary means to make our lyrics have a deeper message.
