IV. Answer the following questions.

1. In general, cell sizes are not related to the size of an organism. However, will there be a difference
in the length of the nerve cells in a rat and a giraffe?
Evolutionary changes occurred in Giraffe to find its proper food so they developed long necks and
rest of its body also became massive as a result the nerve cells are also very long.

2. White blood cells can squeeze through walls of blood vessels and get into intercellular space to
fight against germs. Which property of WBCs allows them to do this?

3
LMOIS / CBSE Acad. Year: 2022-23
WBC is capable of amoeboid movement that helps them to squeeze through intercellular spaces and
blood vessels.
3. What do you use to stain cheek cells?
Methylene blue
4. Why do you think parents and doctors get very worried if a child gets a head or spinal injury?
The spinal cord supports the whole body. So, if any damage is done then the child may become
disabled. It's the same case with a head injury. Brain cells cannot reproduce, so if there is any damage
done it is permanent.
5. Living things are made up of cells while non-living things are made up of atoms and molecules. Do
you agree? Give reasons.
es, cell is a basic structural and functional unit of a body which has to perform all the functions like
reproduction, production of energy and many other functions.
6. What are the shapes of epidermal cells of the onion peel and the human cheek cells?
Rectangular

7. Why is iodine used to stain the onion peel?

Onion bulb stores starch particles in cytoplasm cells. When iodine granules binds with starch particles
they form a bluish black colour. In this process, the onion cells can be clearly identified by staining the
onion cells with iodine.
8. What is the difference between the arrangement of cells in onion cells and in human cheek cells?
The main difference between onion cell and human cell is that the onion cell is a plant cell with a cell
wall made up of cellulose whereas the human cheek cell is an animal cell without a cell wall. The onion
cells are brick-like in shape while the human cheek cells are rounded.
