1. Explain clearly which is easier to govern, a hereditary state or a new principality? Cite the
reasons why one is easier to govern than the other.

2. Machiavelli believes that a Prince should maintain a good army. What are the types of
armies/troops according to him and why is one type the viewed as desirable than the others?
Explain your reasons.

3. Is it more preferable to be loved than to be feared, or the reverse? Explain under the context of
Machiavelli's The Prince.

4. Can cruelty be used “well?” If “those who use cruelty well can, with God and with men,
somehow enhance their position”—do immoral means justify moral ends?

5. In Hobbes' the Leviathan, the term "human nature" pertains to what? Explain.

6. Hobbes' stated that there are three types of commonwealths: the monarchy, the aristocracy,
and the democracy. Describe each of them and explain whether you agree or not with Hobbes
that monarchy is the best form.
7. Explain the concept of "Social Contract" as a theory on the origin of states.

8. John Locke discussed the concept of "self-preservation" in his work. How do we apply this
concept under our laws? Explain.

9. If the earth and everything on it is the common property of humankind, how does one come
upon individual property? Explain.

10. Why is division of labor vital to economic efficiency? Explain.
