Assignment 2.1 OM
Assignment 2.1 OM
Assignment 2.1 OM
Problems:
1. A firm produces shirts using three workers. On Wednesday, Madeline completed 110
shirts in 6 hours, Federico completed 90 shirts in 7 hours, and Susan completed 130
shirts in 9 hours. What was the overall productivity of the firm?
Productivity = (110 shirts / 6 hours) + (90 shirts / 7 hours) + (130 shirts / 9 hours)
= (330 shirts / 22 hours)
= 15 shirts per hour
2. Suppose that a company produced 300 standard bookcases last week using eight
workers and it produced 240 standard bookcases this week using six workers. In which
period was productivity is higher? Explain.
Despite having fewer workers, productivity this week is higher than productivity
last week, as shown above. Because there are fewer workers, they will work more
efficiently and intelligently to produce more. Furthermore, with fewer employees,
there will be no work interruptions due to loitering and chit-chatting with one
another.
3. During week one, on average, the aircraft cleaning staff was able to totally clean an
airplane in 45 minutes using 3 cleaners. During week two the average time to clean an
aircraft went to 40 minutes with one of the cleaning staff off sick. Week two
productivity changed in which direction and by how much?
45 minutes
Productivity (week 1) =
3 cleaners
= 15 minutes per cleaner
40 minutes
Productivity (week 2) =
2 cleaners
= 20 minutes per cleaner
Week 2’s productivity changed by 5 minutes in an upward direction, which means that it is more
productive than week 1.
