LESSON 1: Vocal and Instrumental Music of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Periods

1. Medieval Period (700-1400)


- During this time, the Christian Church influenced Europe’s culture and political affairs.
1. Gregorian Chant – approved music of the church made by Pope Gregory I sung
through acapella.
2. Troubadour Music - secular music not bound by Catholic traditions emerged
usually using one single musical line sometimes with improvised
accompaniment. The music tells of chivalry and love for country.

Renaissance Period (1400-1600)


- Music during this period became an important leisure activity. Members of the upper class
were expected to have received musical training.
1. Mass - singing Christian sacraments usually through acapella.
2. Madrigal – expressed in a poetic text and sung during courtly social gatherings.
Sung acapella frequently in 3-6 voices.

Baroque Period (1685-1750)


- During this time, the arts highlighted grandiose and elaborate ornamentation which were
clearly seen in the Baroque musical compositions.
1. Chorale - harmonized version of hymnal tunes sung usually by soprano, alto,
tenor, and bass.
2. Concerto – music played by solo instrument accompanied by an orchestra
3. Concerto grosso – music played by small group of solo instruments.
4. Oratorio–a lengthy choral work usually of a religious nature.
5. Fugue–a musical composition in which one of two themes are repeated or
imitated.
LESSON 2: Performance Practices of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Periods

Medieval period emphasized on Church or Sacred music where the priest and the
congregation were only allowed to sing during masses. Sung prayers were often
unaccompanied and women were not allowed to perform in the church. This period elevated
unison singing but later emerged a group of singers called the Choir, composed solely of
men and boys who assumed the musical role of answering and contrasting the solo singing
of the priest.

Although sacred music was still relevant during the Renaissance period, secular
music was more prominent during the period. Printed descriptions of instrument and their
discussions on tuning and technique supplied the needs of both professional and non-
professional musicians. Secular music absorbed techniques from sacred music and vice
versa, while instrumental, vocal and combined performance both on Sacred and Secular
music.

Baroque period let the composers experiment with finding a fuller sound with the
composition of Orchestra and common tonality (Harmony, Rhythm, Duration, etc.)
