RULE BOOK
General Rules
• The right to participate in the competitions of University Science and Technology Youth Festival
is restricted to the full-time and part-time students of constituent departments /Colleges of Cochin
University.
• The office bearers of the Cochin University Union are not eligible to participate in the youth
festival competitions.
• Any student of CUSAT other than the office bearers of Cochin university union can participate in
the youth festival competitions even if they are given different charges (including Convener-ship)
for the conduct of the youth festival.
• The overall charge of each team and the team selection organization and participation rests with the
team coordinator.
• The students shall carry their Identity Cards issued by their University /College. The team
coordinators shall submit valid Identity cards of participants for verification at the time of
registration.
• Participants must bring their own musical instruments, costumes etc. or other special items
required for different events.
• An item in the competition will be conducted only if there is a minimum of three entries for
individual items and two for group items. The competition for an item will be conducted even if the
minimum required is not met due to the withdrawal of entries.
• The university union will arrange stage and stage requirements. Special setting if required for
drama, skit, etc. would have to be arranged by the participating teams.
• No makeup will be provided. Make up man, materials, etc. will have to be arranged by the
participating teams.
• Only for the following items external help (background music, lighting etc.) at performance only
can be sought if not specified otherwise. Solo dance, Classical dance, Group dance, Oppana, Mime,
etc.
• A rolling trophy instituted by the University Union will be awarded to the winning team. Further,
there will be another trophy for the runner up team.
• Photo verification
Participant’s will be verified before performance with respect to the photo in registration form.

• Points awarded
1. Individual items:
1st place : 5 points
2nd place : 3 points
3rd place : 1 point
2. Group items:
1st Place : 10 points
2nd place : 6 points
3rd place : 2 points

• Steering committee headed by the General Convener will be the superior body and the members of
the participating institution will have to strictly abide by the rules and regulations laid down from
time to time by the steering committee of the Union.
• All participants shall maintain dignity and decorum at the Festival at all times. If the behavior of
any participant/spectator is found contrary to the objectives of the Festival, the Steering-Cum-
Appellate committee may take suitable action against the persons concerned.
• The participants are requested to carefully study the rules and regulations for the various events.
The decision of the judges appointed for different events shall be final. It is expected that their
judgement will be respected. In case of any dissatisfaction, the matter may be referred to the Jury
of Appeals. Complaints if any may be forwarded to the General Convener in writing through the
concerned staff member who is in charge of the institution or team within one hour after the
announcement of the results. The charge of an appeal will be Rs.2000 for group items and Rs.
1000 for individual items.
• No appeal shall lie against the decision of the Jury of Appeals.

• The panel of judges appointed by the University Union will judge competition. Each panel will
have a minimum of two members except for quiz.
• If a substitute wishes to take part in an item, it should be reported to the program committee
by the coordinator of the concerned team, at least one hour before the commencement of the
competition.
• Disqualification for violation of eligibility rules: Any disqualification of a participant
on the ground of ineligibility will result in the automatic disqualification of the contingent for
that arts festival
• SCORING: The position for different events shall be awarded based on the average of
the marks awarded by the panel of judges generally; the variations of the marks awarded by
different judges shall not be greater than 30%. If the difference between the highest and lowest
marks awarded exceeds 30% than the average of the two marks, whose difference does not
exceed 30% shall be taken. However, in case the difference between the marks awarded by the
three different judges is greater than 30% shall be taken as the basis and the average of these
two marks is taken
• ACCOMPANISTS: Play back singers and persons playing musical instruments etc. are
the accompanists mentioned in this Manual. Curtain pullers, light boys, makeup man and
helpers like operator of CD etc. will not come under the category of accompanists. Students are
preferred as accompanists and helpers. But in case of necessity, the participants may use CD /
bring outside accompanists in accordance with item wise rules.
• Five students from each team can participate in the individual events and two teams from each
team can participate in the group events except for certain events.
• The time schedule and the general rules of the events can be changed by the steering committee
without prior notice.
• Each participant and accompanist should bring their identity card and should produce it on
demand.
• Audio cassettes can be used for all the dance items and organizers will not be held responsible,
in case of any audio failure or low audible quality.
• An individual can participate in five numbers of individual items and three numbers of group
items.Performances that exceed given time limit for each event will be valued by the decision
of steering committee.
• The Programme Committee may reschedule and pre- announce programmes on account of any
sudden development.
• The University Union can make any further changes to the rules without notice
NOTE
(i) Kalathilakam, Kala Pratibha will be selected based on total points secured in individual items in
different categories (at least three categories including dance). If such a person does not exist, points
earned will be considered.
(ii) The person who secures maximum individual points in each category (LITERARY, FINE ARTS,
MUSIC, DANCE, and THEATRE) will be named as the SARGA PRATHIBHA 0f the following
category.
(iii) In the case of tie for the above titles, the number of 1st places won by the participants will be
considered
(iv) Further questions if any will be settled considering places won in-group event.
(v) In case, the performance exceeds the time limit the curtain will be put down and the micro phone
will be cut off.
(vi) A warning bell will be given at the last but 1 minute of every competition.

Event Rules
LITERATURE
ESSAY WRITING
POETRY WRITING
SHORT STORY WRITING

 Separate competitions will be there in Malayalam, English and Hindi.


 Maximum time allotted is 60 minutes.
 The topic will be given on the spot.
 These rules are applicable for the above three events.

ELOCUTION
RECITATION

 Separate competitions will be there in Malayalam, English and Hindi.


 Each speaker will be allowed to speak for maximum five minutes.
 Subject / Topic of item will be announced on the spot.
 Judgment will most likely be based on qualities like correctness of language, clarity of
expression, development of the theme and other rhetorical qualities

DEBATE

 A college can have maximum of two teams.


 Each team will be represented by the two debaters; one will speak FOR, while another
will speak AGAINST the motion.
 Topic will be disclosed on the spot.
 Each debater will be allowed to speak for maximum 5 minutes.
 Paper reading is not allowed.

FILM REVIEW

 Total time of competition is 150 minutes.


 A movie will be played by program committee.
 The participants should write a review about the same movie in 60 minutes.
 Uses of any electronic devices such as mobile phones/ tablet pcs are strictly
prohibited.

QUIZ

 Quizmaster will conduct quiz.


 The quizmaster at the event will disclose pattern and method of Quiz.
 Winners will be determined based on the total points secured by the teams.
 A team of three participants shall participate.

FINE ARTS
ON THE SPOT PAINTING

 Separate competitions will be held for both watercolour and oil colour painting.
 Event will be conducted on the spot and participants will be requested to do painting
on the subject given by the in-charge(s) of the competition.
 Duration will not be more than 2 hours 30 minutes.
 Candidate shall bring their own material like brushes, paints etc. The organizers will
provide only paper / sheet.

POSTER DESIGN

 Item will be conducted on the spot and the participants will be requested to do poster
on the given subject / topic / theme by the in- charge(s) of the competition.
 Duration will not be more than 2 hours 30 minutes.
 Participants shall bring their own material. Only the organizers will provide the
Drawing paper / Sheet.

COLLAGE
 Item will be conducted on the spot on the given topic/subject.
 Duration will not be more than 2 hours 30 minutes.
 Participants shall bring their own scissors, pasting and other material required for the
contest.
 Collage has to be prepared from old magazines.

CLAY MODELING

 Item will be conducted on the spot.


 Duration will not be more than 2 hours 30 minutes.
 Topics/ size and other specific rules shall be announced on the spot.
 The organizers will provide Clay.

CARTOONING
PENCIL DRAWING
 Item will be conducted on the spot on the given subject/ idea.
 Duration will not be more than 2 hours 30 minutes.
 Participants shall bring their own material only the Drawing paper will be provided.

CARICATURE

 Item will be conducted on the spot and participants will be requested to do caricature
on the given subject/ idea.
 Duration of the event shall not exceed two and half-hours in any case.
 Candidates shall bring their own materials like brushes, paints etc.
 The committee will provide only paper/sheet.
 Use of oil colour, watercolour or pencil is permitted.
 Personal remarks, aspersions etc. are not allowed.

RANGOLI

 Duration will not be more than 2 hours 30 minutes.


 Participants shall bring their own material.
 This art is known differently in various regions such as Mandna, Alpana, Alekhan,
Kolam, Rangoli, etc. For this, the medium and form for expression can be free hand,
pictorial and descriptive.
 Only one medium shall be used - Poster Colour or Flower Petals or Saw- dust or Pulses
or Rice without pasting, gilt powder is not permitted.
 The Participants shall have to prepare a Rangoli within the space provided by the
organizers.
SPOT PHOTOGRAPHY

 The participant has to bring his/her own digital camera of not less than 10 mega pixels
and not greater than 24.1 mega pixels or cameras with film rolls.
 The digital camera should have a memory card, which will be formatted by the judges
before the commencement of the contest.
 The time limit will be 2.30 hours.
 The participant should capture 5 photographs on the theme announced on the spot by
the judges.
 No mixing, matching or morphing of photographs will be permitted.
 Software such as Photoshop etc. for enhancing images not permitted.
 The organizers will have all rights for the use of these pictures as and when they deem
fit.
 Softcopy and hardcopy of the digital photo is to be submitted.
 Digital images are evaluated based on IMPACT, COMPOSITION, TECHNICAL QUALITY,
and SUITABILITY for the specific theme.
 The additional instructions will be announced on the spot.

MEHENDI

 The due credit will be given on originality, creativity, decorative art with aesthetic
sense.
 Use of handprint, any kind of mold and any kind of decorative material is not allowed.
 The participant has to bring its own Mehendi and other materials required for it.
 The total duration for completing the painting shall not exceed 2.30 hours.
 The Mehendi must be extended to the palmer side forearm with minimum six-inch
length.
 The participant has to draw the Mehendi on palmer side of both hands of the model.
The model should be the student of the same university.

MUSIC
LIGHT MUSIC (MALE AND FEMALE)
 Separate competitions will be there for male and female participants.
 Maximum number of accompanists is two (Student of the same college).
 Only Malayalam non-film songs are allowed.
 The duration of the song shall not exceed 5 minutes.
 Judgment will be made on the qualities like Swara, Thala, Composition, general
impression etc.
CLASSICAL MUSIC

 Maximum number of accompanists is two (Student of the same college).


 Item should be presented in Karnatik style only.
 Maximum time allowed for performance is 10 minutes.
 Movie songs are not allowed.
 Judgment will be based on the qualities like Swara, Thala, composition, general
impression etc.
 Only instruments for Sruthi are allowed.

WESTERN VOCAL SOLO


 The number of accompanists for playing instruments of the stage (Students of the
same college) should not be more than one.
 Language of the song shall only be English.
 Duration of the song shall not exceed 5 minutes.
 Judgment will be made on the qualities like composition, rhythm, co-ordination and
general impression.

INSTRUMENTAL PERCUSSION EASTERN

 Maximum number of accompanists is one.


 Participant shall bring instruments.
 Time allotted for the event is not less than 8 minutes and not more than 10 minutes.
 Judgment will be based on the qualities like Thala, composition, general impression
etc.
 Electronic instruments are not allowed for the performance.
 The accompanist shall not play a percussion instrument.

INSTRUMENTAL PERCUSSION WESTERN

 Maximum number of accompanists is one


 Participant shall bring instruments
 Time allotted for the event is not less than eight minutes and not more than ten
minutes.
 Judgment will be based on the qualities like Thala, composition and general
impression
 The accompanists shall not play a percussion instrument

INSTRUMENTAL NON-PERCUSSION WIND TYPE

 Separate competitions will be held for Eastern as well as Western streams.


 The accompanist shall not play a wind instrument.
 All other rules are the same as above.

INSTRUMENTAL NON-PERCUSSION STRING TYPE

 Separate competitions will be held for Eastern as well as Western streams.


 The accompanist shall not play a string instrument.
 All other rules are the same as above.

GROUP SONG (INDIAN)


 Two group songs will be presented by the same team out of which one will be a Folk
Song.
 No movie song should be presented as part of the group song.
 The group songs should be taken from Indian songs, which can be in regional
language.
 Judgment will be based on the quality like singing only and not on make-up, costumes
and actions of the team. Sruthi, Tal, Rhythm, Harmony etc. will be considered for the
judgment.
 Maximum six singers in a group and number of accompanists playing instruments shall
be three.
 Only students are allowed in the team as participants (singers/non-singers playing
instruments).
 Maximum time allowed for the group song is 10 minutes, excluding setting time.

GROUP SONG (WESTERN)

 The group song should be from English language.


 Maximum of six singers in a group and maximum number of accompanists (Students)
playing instrument shall be three.
 Keyboard facility can be used.
 Judging will be based on the quality of singing a composition, rhythm and general
impression and orchestra only.
 Maximum time allowed for the group song is 10 minutes that does not include setting
time. The setting time for a group shall not exceed 5 minutes.

GANAMELA

 Maximum number of participants shall be five.


 Karaoke must be used.
 Humming and chorus is not allowed in the karaoke.
 Maximum allotted time for the performance is 30 minutes.
 Minimum of four songs & maximum of five songs.
 1 duet (can be both male-male, male-female or female-female)
 1 group
 2 solo
 Music should be submitted in the PCO one day before.
 All the music should be given as a single file.

NAADANPAATTU

 The group can consist of all boys or girls or combined with a maximum of six
participants and five accompanists (Students).
 The duration of the performance will be a minimum of eight and a maximum of 15
minutes. This does not include setting time which shall not be more than 5 minutes.
 Film songs are not permitted.
 The team must present folk songs in Malayalam

MAPPILAPATTU

 Maximum time allowed for performance is 5 minutes.


 Judgement will be based on Sruthilayam & Rhythm, Bhavam, Language & Literary
Clarity.
 Movie songs are not allowed. Preference given to traditional Mappila Pattu.

THEATRE
DRAMA
 The duration of the play should not exceed thirty minutes.
 For stage setting and removal of properties up to ten minutes will be given.
 The number of participants should not exceed nine and that of accompanists is five.
 External help for light and background music may be sought.
 The medium of the drama can be Malayalam or English.
 Judgement will be based on the qualities of the play like theme, work on acting,
stagecraft, total design, general impression etc.
 The team should give four copies of the script along with the language of presentation
on the day of event.

MONO ACT

 No accompanist allowed.
 Judgment will be based on qualities like ability to act, clarity of language, literary
expression, originality, humor, general impression etc.
 Time allotted for performance is 5 minutes.
MIMICRY

 Participants may mimic sound of machines and speeches of well know persons
including film personalities.
 Judgement will be based on imitating skill, variety of voices and presentation.
 Each student artist shall be given maximum time of 5 minutes.

MIME

 Maximum of six participants are allowed per team. Two accompanist allowed.
 Judgment will be based on the qualities like idea, creativity of presentation, use of
make-up, music and general impression.
 Duration of performance shall be maximum of 5 minutes.

SKIT

 Maximum of six participants are allowed to participate in this item.


 Maximum number of accompanists shall not be more than three.
 Maximum time allotted for each team is 10 minutes.
 Use of make-up, drapery and background music is allowed. Personal remarks,
aspersions, character assassination etc. are not allowed.
 Participating team should submit three copies of the synopsis of the theme of Skit,
along with language of presentation (Malayalam or English) on the day of event.
 The item will be judged on the qualities like theme, work on acting, stagecraft, design
and general impression.
 Vulgarity or bitter insinuations in presentation should be avoided. Only innocent satire
or humor is expected.

KATHAPRASANGAM

 Maximum number of accompanists shall not be more than four.


 Performance minimum of 10 minutes and maximum of 15 minutes.
DANCE
MOHINIYATTOM
BHARATANATYAM
KUCHIPUDI

 Separate competition will be there for Mohiniyattom, Bharatanatyam, and Kuchipudi.


 Bharatanatyam & Kuchipudi will have separate competition for male and female.
 Maximum number of accompanist is three (external help can be sought).
 Judgment will be based on the qualities like Thala, Technique and Rhythm, Abhinaya
or expression, Costumes, Footwork and general Impression. These rules are applicable
for the above three events.
 Time allotted is not less than 12 minutes and not more than 15 minutes.

SOLO DANCE FOLK

 Each college can send five entries. Maximum number of accompanists is three (external
help can be sought).
 Only non-film songs are allowed.
 The dance can be of either primitive or a folk dance (Indian Style) but not a classical
one.
 Maximum time allowed for performance is 10 minutes and stage setting is three
minutes.
 Judgement will be based on Rhythm, Expression, Costumes, Make-up, and Sets on
Overall Effect.

ADAPT TUNE

 The maximum time allowed per participant is three minutes.


 Three different tunes or songs will be given to the participant on the spot.
 The participant should have to dance according to the changes in tune.
 One song will last for one minute.

GROUP DANCE (INDIAN)

 There is no restriction for seeking external help for the background music.
 The participating team will be responsible for removal of the sets, properties etc.
immediately after the completion of the performance.
 The music should be taken from Indian songs. Any performance other than Indian
style are not allowed.
 Judgment based on rhythm, formation, expression, costumes, makeup, coordination and overall
effects.
 Maximum number of participant is 12 and not less than 4.
 Maximum time allotted for stage setting is 3 minutes and performance is 10
minutes.

VATTAPATTU

 External help(singing) is not allowed


 Maximum number of participants is 10.
 Judgment based on rhythm, formation, expression, costumes, makeup, coordination and overall
effects.
 Maximum time allotted for stage setting is 3 minutes and performance is 10
minutes.

OPPANA FEMALE

 Maximum number of participants is 10 including accompanists.


 There is no restriction in seeking external help for back ground music.
 The participating team will be responsible for removal of the sets, properties etc.
immediately after the completion of the performance.
 Judgment based on rhythm, formation, expression, costumes, makeup, coordination and overall
effects.
 Maximum time allotted for stage setting is 3 minutes and performance is 10
minutes.

STEP IN SYNCHRO

 Maximum number of participant is 6 and not less than 2.


 There will be a separating screen.
 Judgment will be based on rhythm formation, expression, costumes and
synchronization.
 Maximum time allotted is ten minutes. Stage settings are not allotted.

THIRUVATHIRAKKALI

 There is no restriction in seeking external help for back ground music.


 Maximum number of participants is 10.
 Other rules are same as that of group dance.
WESTERN DANCE

 There is no restriction in seeking external help for back ground music.


 The participating team will be responsible for the removal of their sets, properties
etc. immediately after the completion of performance.
 The music should be western. Any music other than western style are not allowed.
 Judgment based on rhythm, formation, expression, costumes, makeup, coordination and overall
effects.
 Maximum number of participant is 12 and not less than 4.
 Maximum time allotted for stage setting is 5minutes and performance is 10
minutes.

VIDEO CHOREOGRAPHY

 There is restriction for seeking external help.


 The participating team will be responsible for the removal of their sets, properties
etc. immediately after the completion of performance.
 Judgment based on rhythm, formation, expression, costumes, makeup, coordination and overall
effects.
 Maximum number of participant is 12 and not less than 4.
 Maximum time allotted for stage setting is 10minutes and performance is 10
minutes.

NOSTALGIA

 Songs used should be from films released before 1990’s.


 There is restriction for seeking external help.
 The participating team will be responsible for the removal of their sets, properties
etc. immediately after the completion of performance.
 Judgment based on rhythm, formation, expression, costumes, makeup, coordination and overall
effects.
 Maximum number of participants is 12 and not less than 4.
 Maximum time allowed for performance will be 10 min.

KOLKKALI

 Maximum number of participants will be 12 and not less than 8.


 Maximum time allowed for performance will be 10 min.
 The event will be in a traditional mode.
 Judgment based on originality of song rhythm, formation, expression, costumes,
makeup, co-ordination and overall effects.
