SCIENCE 4 ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 3

Water Cycle

I. Learning Competency with Code

Trace and describe the importance of water cycle.
II. Background Information for Learners
In the previous learning activity, you have learned about the source
of water and its uses in your daily activities. You have also learned that you
need water in almost all of your activities at home or in school. Since you
constantly use water every day, do you think its supply will not be depleted?
Where do water from stream, rivers and lake come from?

Did you know that there is no new water on Earth? It all gets recycled
and reused in a process that we called the water cycle. The water cycle is
a way that water moves all around the Earth. It never stops and doesn't
really have a beginning or an end. It's like a big circle.

There are four stages that takes place in water cycle. These are
evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and transpiration. The water
cycle is the process of water moving around between the air and land.

The water cycle is an extremely important process because it

enables the availability of water for all living organisms and regulates
weather patterns on the planet. If water did not naturally recycle itself, you
would run out of clean water, which is essential to life. Water
cycle is important because it makes fresh water available in the form of
rain. The sea water is highly salty which is not fit for drinking by animals or
for the growth of plants.

This learning activity, you will learn the process of water cycle and
explain its importance.
Water Cycle processes Description
Evaporation The sun drives the water cycle.
Heat causes water molecules to
expand and become lighter. Water
then changes to water vapor and
goes up in the air.

Transpiration Plants absorb water through the

roots and use it for photosynthesis.
During photosynthesis, water is
released into the atmosphere as a
by-product. This release of water
into the atmosphere by plants is
called transpiration.

Condensation In the atmosphere, water vapor

begins to cool and changes into
water droplets. This process of
water vapor (gas) changing into
water droplets (liquid) is called
condensation.

Precipitation When clouds become too heavy,

water falls back to the earth. This
process of water falling back to
earth is called precipitation.

Figure 1. The Water cycle

The water cycle is the process of water moving around between the air and
land (see Figure 1). Or in more scientific terms: the water cycle is the
process of water evaporating and condensing on planet Earth in a
continuous process. This process has been happening continuously for
millions of years and without it, there would be no life on Earth.

III. Activity Proper

What did you learn?

A. Trace the process of a Water Cycle by labeling the boxes by

the following words. (Precipitation, Condensation, Evaporation,
Transpiration)
Water Cycle

B. Copy the diagram below in your answer sheet. Trace the Water
cycle by providing Illustrations in the given description inside the
circle.

1. The Sun provides

Heat

5. The water falls back

into the ground, 2. Water evaporates
lakes and oceans rom oceans,
puddles and rivers

4. The Clouds cools

and rise which causes 3.Water condenses into
precipitation droplets to form clouds
The energy of the sun causes some water in the soil, oceans, lakes and
rivers to turn into water vapor in the air through evaporation. As the water vapor
in the air cool, it undergoes condensation. Water vapor collects from plants
through transpiration also change to water droplets and form clouds. Clouds
return the water back to the earth as precipitation in the form of rain. Then, the
cycle starts over again.

Additional Activities
Identify the different processes involved in the Water Cycle with
corresponding questions below.
1. ___________ - Water (Liquid) changes to water vapor (gas)
because of the heat of the sun.
2. ___________ - Water vapor changes to liquid.
3. ___________- Water Vapor from the air deposits to the clouds
4. ___________ - Water from the leaves of plants are released
into the atmosphere.

Guide question

1. All life on Earth needs water. It’s so important to us that when

we’re searching for life on other planets, the first thing we look
for is liquid water.
2. If the water cycle were to stop, lakes, rivers and groundwater
sources would dry up, glaciers would disappear and
precipitation would stop falling.
