PRODUCTION AND
CONSUMPTION OF SUGAR
What is Sugar?
A sweet crystallizable material that
consist wholly or essentially of sucrose, is
colorless or white when pure tending to
brown when less refined, is obtained
commercially from sugarcane or sugar beet
and less extensively from sorghum, maples,
and palms and is important as a source of
dietary carbohydrate and as a sweetener
and preservative of other foods.

Sugar is an important crop in
the Philippines that is planted
throughout the country but is most
abundant in the Visayas and
particularly on Negros Island. Total
production of sugarcane reached
$815 million in 2020, making it the
fifth largest crop by value following
rice, bananas, corn, and coconuts.

The Philippines historically exported
over half of its sugar production to the
United States, but exports declined
significantly over the years as domestic
demand expanded. For Fiscal Year 2021,
the Philippine allocation is 138,154
metric tons commercial weight. The
United States is currently the sole
export market of Philippine raw sugar,
where it is used by some sugar
refineries on the west coast.
History and Discovery

The derivation of the word “sugar” is thought to be from Sanskrit meaning “ground
or candied sugar, originally “grit, gravel”. Sugar was the Philippines' most important
agricultural product, not only because of the foreign money profits, but also because it
was a source of profit for the Filipino aristocracy known as Hacienderos, or landowners,
who owned enormous tracts of land.
The Visayas' principal export was raw
sugar, which was shipped to the United
States, England, and Australia. Manila
produced crystal grain sugar, which was
mostly exported to Spain. Roxas Holdings,
Inc. (RHI) is the largest sugar producer in the
Philippines.
In summary from U.S. Department of Agriulture,
Sugar consumption and imports in Current Yield
2021/2022 are revised down from their previous
forecasts. Consumption is expected to rebound
as COVID-19 restrictions are loosened. Imports
are likely to reach 150,000 MT after dropping to
25,000MT the prior year.

Purpose of Sugar
Sugar is a versatile and irreplaceable functional
ingredient in food. In addition to providing
sweetness, sugar is also used to balance
acidity, add bulk or prevent spoilage among
other functional properties.

Positive Effects of
Sugar

Cane sugar triggers the body to create serotonin, a feel-good

hormone that raises your mood. Dips in your body's serotonin levels are
why you crave sugar, especially when you're tired or unhappy. You get a
mood boost from serotonin when you eat sugary treats. You also help
your body manage your stress levels.
Negative Effects of
Sugar

When you eat excess sugar, the extra insulin in your bloodstream
can affect your arteries all over your body. It causes their walls to get
inflamed, grow thicker than normal and more stiff, this stresses your
heart and damages it over time. This can lead to heart disease, like
heart failure, heart attacks, and strokes.
REMEMBER...
Sugar has yet another harmful effect on the
human body. Overconsumption of sugar causes
hyperinsulinemia, which boosts IGF-1 production in
the liver, which stimulates cancer cell proliferation.
