REVIEW :Drills in finding the square of a number

Music and Learning is Fun
4.1 Introductory Activity As the music plays the teacher will pass the ball to a student seated at the front row. This student
will then pas it to his classmate beside him who will do the same .When the music stops the student
with the ball will answer the questions.

What are the square root of the following numbers?

4 25 100 r2 121 1

10 minutes 16 64 x2 y2 49 0

4.2 Activity Use geoboard and rubber bands to model a square. Using geoboard to visualize the geometric
meaning of square and square root.Explore the relationships between the area of a square and its
side length. The square root of a number can be represented as theside length of a square whose
area is given. Complete the table at the right.
1. What makes these figures "square".
10 minutes 2.What is the length of each square?
3. What is the perimeter of each square?
4. What is the area of each square?Do you have to count at the little square to find out?How can
you find the area of the square if you know the length of one side?
5. Why 25 and 64 are called "perfect square"?
4.3 Analysis
Quadratic equations that can be written in the form x 2 = k can be solved by applying the following
properties:
1. If k > 0, then x2 = k has two real solutions or roots: x = ± √k .
2. If k = 0, then x2 =k has one real solution or root: x = 0 .
3. If k < 0, then x2 = k has no real solutions or roots.
The method of solving quadratic equation x 2 = k is called extracting square roots.

4.5 Application
The students will answer Activity 4: Learn to Solve Quadratic Equations!!! page 20 of Learners
Material
Directions: Use the quadratic equations below to answer the questions that follow.
x2 = 36 t2 - 64 = 0 2s2 - 98 = 0
.
1. Describe and compare the given equations. What statements can you make?
2. Solve each equation in as many ways as you can. Determine the values of each variable to make
5 minutes each equation true.
3. How did you know that the values of the variable really satisfy the equation?
4. Aside from the procedures that you followed in solving each equation, do you think there are
other ways of solving it? Describe these ways if there are any.

4.7 Assignment
Enhancing / improving the The students will have to submit atleast 2 examples of problems that
5 minutes day’s lesson involved solving quadratic equation by extracting square root.
4.8 Concluding Activity
The quadratic equation has many practical applications in the world beyond school. You may not
think you need to know it now; however the higher paying jobs go to those who can use the
10 minutes
quadratic equation to design safe and useful products for people.
