Passage A:
Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the
need of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the
world. Today, nearly two thirds of the world’s population live within 80 kms of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive.
Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of
man’s needs. The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology is impressive. Oil
and gas explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. A lot of valuable minerals exist on the
ocean floor ready to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and
shellfish is an ancient skill practised in the past mainly by Oriental people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm
temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and
waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong,
new materials has made this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2050s the
problems that prevent us from fully exploiting the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be
largely solved.

Computerization has changed high school education in many ways. In early 1980s only 20% of
high school teachers in the US used computers. However, since then high schools in the US have
computerized rapidly. In 1987, school acquired about 1.5 million computers with 95% of the schools

Passage C:
The Winterthur Museum is a collection and a house. There are many museums devoted to the
decorative arts and many house museums, but rarely in the United States is a great collection displayed
in a great country house. Passing through successive generations of a single family, Winterthur has been
a private estate for more than a century. Even after the extensive renovations made to it between 1929
and 1931, the house remained a family residence. This fact is of importance to the atmosphere and effect
of the museum. The impression of a lived-in house is apparent to the visitor: the rooms look as if
they were vacated only a short while ago whether by the original owners of the furniture or the most
recent residents of the house can be a matter of personal interpretation. Winterthur remains, then, a
house in which a collection of furniture and architectural elements has been assembled. Like an English
country house, it is an organic structure; the house, as well as the collection and manner of displaying it
to the visitor, has changed over the years. The changes have coincided with developing concepts of the
American arts, increased knowledge on the part of collectors and students, and a progression toward the
achivement of a historical effect in period-room displays. The rooms at Winterthur have followed this
current, yet still retained the charater of a private house.
The concept of a period room as a display technique has developed gradually over the years in an effort
to present works of art in a context that would show them to greater effect and would give them more

objects related by style, date, or place of manufacture.

Marriage
A great majority of adults in the industrial world – in fact, about 90 percent – will be married at some
time in their lives. Of those who do not, some may choose to remain single, but others still have no
choice. An alarm number who marry will divorce, but this is not because marriage itself has lost its

trust, loyalty and intimate, confide in each other, show mutual respect, are willing to listen to their
counterpart’s concerns and agree on their children’s upbringing. However , from time to time the
