 What are consonants?

The Word consonant may be used ambiguously for booth speech sounds and the letters of the alphabet used to
write them.

In articulatory phonetics, a consonant is a speech sound that is articulated with complete or partial closure of the
vocal tract. Examples:

/ P /: that is pronounced by touching (or closing) your lips

/ t /: pronounced with the front of the tongue

/ K /: pronounced with the back of the tongue

/ h /: pronounced in the throat

/ f / and / s /: pronounced by forcing air through a narrow channel

/ m / and / n /: pronounced by forcing air to the nose

In English orthography, the letters H, R, W, Y and the diagraph GH are used for both consonants and vowels for
instance, the letter “y” stand for the consonant / J / in young, the vowel / I / in myth, the / I / in funny, the diphthong
/ ai / in sky, and forms several diagraphs for other diphthongs such as, boy and key.

 Consonant are usually classified according to:

*the place of the articulation: the location of the structure in the vocal tract, such as dentals, bilabials or velars.

*the manner of articulation: the way in which the obstructer of the airflow is complished, as in stops, fricatives and
approximants

For example; we can classify the sound / S / as a fricative, and the sound for / m / as a bilabial nasal stop.

Since the number of speech sounds in the world´s language is far greater than the number of letters in any alphabet,
linguists have devised system such as the international phonetic alphabet ( IPA) to assign unique and unambiguous
symbol to each attested consonant. The English alphabet has fewer letters than the English language has sounds, so
diagraphs like / ch /, / sh /, / th /, / ng /, and / nk / are used to extend the alphabet, through some letters and
diagraphs represent more than one consonant.

For example: the sound spelled / th / in “this” is a different consonant from the / th / in “thin” (in the IPA, these are

/ / and / / respectively)

What is voicing?

Voicing refers to the presence or absence of vocal fold vibration during the speech sounds production in a
voiced sound, there is vocal fold vibration and an audible “buzzing” sound. In a unvoiced sound there is no
vocal fold vibration.

For us to be able to identify which of our consonants are voiced or unvoiced, we have to put our index finger
and thumb on the sides of our throat and them make the sound of the consonant, so we can feel it there is

actual vibration or don’t.
