Course Description
Technological innovation drives how people work and interact in
organisations. BUS104 Organisational Behaviour in the Technology Era is the
study of individual and group behaviour within organisations in the modern
technological environment. Organisational behaviour is an exciting and
dynamic field of study that has great importance for achieving organisational
success. The study of organisational behaviour provides students with the
opportunity to develop and refine people management skills in an
organisational context. This course introduces students to the concepts,
theories and practices of organisational behaviour which can be applied in the
contemporary workplace. Some of the topics include personality, motivation,
group behaviour and organisational change. Students will also examine how
technology impacts organisational behaviour in different ways.
20
Learning Outcomes (Theory)
1. Recognise the importance of organisational behaviour in developing
interpersonal skills and improving organisational performance
2. Present technology and trends that drive transformation of work
3. Relate individual differences to work-related behaviour
4. Discuss how motivation in the workplace helps to achieve
organisational goals

21
Learning Outcomes (Theory)
5. Illustrate how groups work and how teams can be effective
6. Recall the communication process and ways to increase
communication effectiveness
7. Analyse nature and management of conflict at work
8. Review processes for managing organisational change and stress at
work

22
Learning Outcomes (Practical)
1. Apply organisational behaviour principles and practices in real and
hypothetical situations
2. Demonstrate the essential knowledge and interpersonal skills to work
effectively in a team

23
Study Unit 1 Overview
Introduction to Organisational Behaviour
Unit 1 Learning Outcomes
1. Explain the concept of an organisation
2. Illustrate the organisation as an open system
3. Recognise the significance of the people-organisational relationship
4. Explain the meaning, nature and scope of organisational behaviour
5. Demonstrate the importance of studying organisational behaviour and
how it relates to interpersonal skills in the workplace

25
Unit 1 Learning Outcomes
6. Recall the disciplines that contribute to organisational behaviour
7. Describe the three levels of analysis in the study of organisational
behaviour
8. Recognise the changing nature of work and how it affects
organisational behaviour
9. Present technology developments and applications which may impact
the workplace

26
What is an Organisation?
• Features of organisations
• Organisations as open systems
• Contingency approach of organisation
– There is no one best form of organisation as situational factors affect
organisational performance

Discussion 1
1. Think of an organisation that you are familiar with. Can you describe
the organisation as an open system? For example, what are the
inputs, outputs and transformation activities?
2. What are the sub-systems in your organisation?

30
What is Organisational Behaviour?

Study and understanding of

individual and group
behaviour and patterns of
structure and management
in order to help improve
organisational performance
and effectiveness

31
Multidisciplinary Approach to OB

(Source: Mullins 2019, Fig 1.2)

32
Levels of Analysis in OB
• Individual level
– Factors that affect individual employees (e.g., personality and perception)
• Group level
– Factors that affect groups (e.g., teams, communication, conflict)
• Organisational level
– Factors that affect the organisation (e.g., organisation structure, change
management)

33
OB Factors
• OB inputs – Variables like personality, group structure and
organisational culture that lead to processes
• OB processes – Actions that individuals, groups, and organisations
engage in as a result of inputs and that lead to certain outcomes.
Examples of OB processes:
– Individual level – motivation, perception, decision making
– Group level – communication, power, leadership, conflict
– Organisational level – human resource management and change
processes
• OB outcomes – Key variables that you want to explain or predict and
that are affected by other variables

34
OB Outcomes
• Key OB outcomes are:
– Attitudes and stress, task performance, organisational citizenship
behaviour, counterproductive work behaviour, group cohesion, group
functioning, productivity, and survival

• While studying OB you must try to establish linkages/relationships

between different OB variables. By doing so, you will better understand
how OB functions

• Example linking variables of OB model:

– How personality (input) leads to motivation (process) and which leads to
performance (outcome)
