Question T1.Q1: For the circuit shown in Figure T1.Q1, the voltmeter
measures125 V , the ammeter measures 5.1 A and the wattmeter
measures 480 W . If the load consists of a resistor and inductor and the
supply frequency is f = 50 Hz , find the following:

a) The power factor. Is it leading or lagging?


b) The real power, reactive power and apparent power.
c) The average stored magnetic energy in the inductor.
d) Draw the phasor diagram for the circuit.

Question T1.Q4: A farm is located 5 km off the main road. The farm
is connected to the distribution system via overhead line. The
= 0.1 Ω /km . The load on the farm
resistance of the line is Rline
consists of pump driven by an electrical motor and five 100 W lights,
represented by the resistor Rlight . The motor can be modelled as an
inductor Lm = 0.128 H in series with a resistor R=

c) Compute the power loss in the transmission line.
d) To improve the efficiency of power consumption, the load
power factor needs to be increased to pf = 0.9 lagging.
Compute the value of an external capacitor that needs to be
connected in series with load to improve the power factor by
the required amount.

Hint: To simplify the problem, you may assume that the voltage drop
across Rline is negligible.

Question T1.Q11: It is required to install three 100 W light bulbs in


three different locations in an outdoor shed. The shed is 20 meters away
from the Vrms = 240 V main power switch. A wire runs from the main
power switch to the power outlet in the shed. The lights in the shed are
placed 2,4 and 6 meters away from the power outlet. The per meter
length resistance of the wire connecting the power supply to the lights
is Rwire = 0.1 Ω /m .

a) Sketch a circuit diagram for this setting.


b) Calculate the total amount of current drawn by the 3 lights.
c) Compute the relative amount of power loss in the wires with
respect to the total power supplied by the source (this is referred to as the
efficiency of the system).
