Film Analysis 1: Brokeback Mountain
1. Who are the main characters in the film? Give their profile in terms of the
following:
 Full name: Ennis Del Mar
 Age: 19
 Civil Status: Divorce
 Sex: Male
 Gender Identity: Bisexual
 Occupation: Rancher

 Full name: Jack Twist

 Age: 19
 Civil Status: Married
 Sex: Male
 Gender Identity: Bisexual
 Occupation: Rancher, bull rider

2. Describe the relationship of the two (2) main characters. What is their
relationship in the beginning? How did their relationship progress? What are the
factors that contributed to the intricacies of their relationship? What are your
thoughts about this?
At first, they were partners in their occupation as a rancher in Brokeback. After days
near one another, they turned to friends then lovers. Isolation is a key factor within their
love story, isolation brought them together, but it also drew them apart. I have to say it is
a good movie and it portrays very well the complexity of homosexual relationships.
3. Using the lens of Gender Fluidity, explain in your own words the acceptability
and the normality of their relationship assuming that it happened at present. What
is your ethical and moral stand in this situation? Elaborate your stand using
evidence-based sources.
In today’s time, Homosexual relationships or any relationships outside of the custom
norm of men and women are being accepted by society. I would have to say that I stand
by with gay relationships, love is love. Nothing can change that. When Ennis was about
to get married, he was unsure and not happy with his soon-to-be wedded wife. You
could see in the movie when Ennis punches the wall after jack left, you could see his
frustration and sadness having to pretend that nothing happened. You could also see
when both main characters when to have affairs with their wives, they were in peace
and happiness.
4.  What psychological theory/theories best explain the gender identity
development of the two main characters? Cite three (3) scenes in the film that will
support your claim.
The psychological theory that I could interpret as a good understanding is a
Psychoanalytic theory by Freud Sigmund: ID, EGO, and SUPEREGO. ID is more of
unconscious and impulsive behavior, we could see when Jack let Ennis in the tent
because he was cold, then they began indulging in indecent acts. EGO is the
Subconscious standard of living, we could see that both of them get married and have
kids, due to that being the norm and acceptable than having a gay relationship.
SUPEREGO is a Sense of self and mediation between imagination and reality, we could
see this when they were having an affair with each other, their relationship is the fantasy
part of SUPEREGO and their wives’ relationship serves as the real part of SUPEREGO.
5. What are your three (3) learning insights after watching the film?
I learned that we must be with the one we love and we must follow our hearts. I learned
that love is confusing and at times we are lost in the roads of life, but we must stay
strong and it will solve itself in the end. I learned that it’s better, to tell the truth rather
than hide it before you lose the one you love.
