Thursday, June 30, 2011 7:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. Foothills Unitarian Church 1815 Yorktown Avenue
Her voice and insights on the experience of Samburu indigenous culture is a much-sought commodity worldwide and we have the rare opportunity to have her in Fort Collins on June 30, 2011. Honored as 2010 International Woman of the Year, Rebecca has been featured in Time magazine, O magazine, and Newsweeks 2011 edition of the 150 Women Who Rock the World. Following Rebeccas presentation, there will be a short video and a sale of beaded items, crafted by the women of Umoja. Umoja is a refuge for approximately 50 women and children who are fleeing domestic violence, torture, forced marriage and FGM. Under Rebeccas leadership, they work collectively and find strategies for survival. The women have maintained their independence and run a small school completely through the sale of their handcrafted beaded items. The Umoja Uaso Womens Fund, a 501 (c)(3) was created in 2010. All donations go directly to the Umoja Uaso Womens Group. All proceeds from the sale of their beaded items are given directly to the artisans, providing them with a return that exceeds fair trade practices. An introduction to Rebecca can be seen in this short video http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=feTXaGgFvSI RSVPs are not required but appreciated. Contact: Victoria Keller, [email protected] 970.402.3030
