BARNWELL, SOUTH CAROLINA )

FAMILY OF STEPHEN SMITH REACTS

TO THE INDICTMENT OF ALEX MURDAUGH

Sandy Smith, the mother of Stephen Smith, would like to convey her appreciation to the
State Law Enforcement Division [SLED] and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson for
their action today in Colleton County regarding the murder indictments of Maggie Murdaugh and
Paul Murdaugh.
Earlier today, Alex Murdaugh was indicted in Colleton County for two counts of Murder
and two counts of Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a violent crime in the deaths
of his wife and son on June 7, 2021 at their country home, Moselle.
Stephen Smith was found dead on Sandy Run Road in Hampton County, South Carolina
on July 8, 2015 under suspicious circumstances. Stephen’s death was the first in a string of deaths
in Hampton County which have collectively gained worldwide media and public attention. The
tragic deaths of Stephen Smith, Gloria Satterfield, Mallory Beach and most recently, Maggie and
Paul Murdaugh, have been under intense scrutiny and investigation by journalists, lawyers, private
investigators, and law enforcement officers. Despite all of the scrutiny, Stephen Smith’s death
remains shrouded in mystery and unanswered questions.
On June 23, 2021, SLED spokesperson Tommy Crosby released the following statement:
"SLED has opened an investigation into the death of Stephen Smith based upon information
gathered during the course of the double murder investigation of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh."
However, the Smith family has consistently stated they have no knowledge or reason to believe
that any member of the Murdaugh family was involved in Stephen’s death.
Quote from Sandy Smith, mother of Stephen Smith:
We have waited for answers for a long time in Stephen’s death, but I am not the only
grieving loved one who needs help. I know that other loving family members have also
searched for answers in the deaths of their family members. I am happy that SLED and the
Attorney General’s Office have provided some closure and answers in the deaths of Maggie
and Paul. While the many questions about my son’s death remain, this action gives me
hope that we will get justice for my Stephen. We think of him and miss him every day and
we grieve with the members of the Murdaugh and Branstetter families who have been left
behind.
Quote from Mike Hemlepp, Attorney for the Smith Family:
The men and women investigating the unsolved and mysterious crimes which have been
uncovered in Hampton County took a bold step today proving that a new day has dawned
in Hampton County, this was it. To all of those citizens who know what happened to Stephen
but have been afraid or reluctant to come forward, this action today is a sign that the old
ways of doing business in Hampton are gone. You can relieve your burden with courage
and confidence by coming forward and telling what you know.
