Introduction
Technology is an integral part of nearly every teenager's life most especially that our era
is called “technology era”. From cell phones and video games to computers and television, the
use of technology affects teens positively and negatively. Depending on the source of
technology, teens can make the most of its effect on their lives through responsible use. This

Almost all teens use technology every day. That raises the question “Is the use of
technology affecting teens in a positive way or a negative way?” As a fellow teen, in my daily
life, I use technology constantly. Either in school or outside of school. I feel teens rely on today’s
In this so called ‘technology era” no matter if you don’t realize it or not there is a monster
that will never be destroyed. That monster is technology. Teens these days are being suffocated
by the internet, cell phones, and texting.
Many teens carry cell phones and find they have become dependent on them to stay
connected to friends and the outside world. Keeping in touch with parents and friends is
important, but it shouldn't consume the majority of a teen's time. Their time to spend outdoors
with friends and family members is hindered by cell phones as the teen get addicted to cell
phone. Texting also has taught teens to abbreviate words that has affected their spelling and
makes teens make careless mistakes in spelling in class or in school. These habits are formed if
teens are not guarded or watched over on what they are using their phone for. Disallowing the
use of cell phone during meals and while making home works are some ways parents should
implement to their teens to control their use of their cell phones to regulate their appetite for
Teens need computers for many academic assignments and research projects. However, some
teens find it difficult to stay on task with the temptation of surfing the web for anything from
games to inappropriate websites. Many teens spend hours online, e-mailing, instant messaging,
downloading music and updating social networking pages. All of this access can be dangerous.
Teens who abuse the Internet can lose sight of priorities such as academic performance and
relationships and they lose the interest in books. Parents must keep the computer in an open area
of the household such as a desk in the living room for them to monitor their children’s internet
activity.
Video games can help teens unwind and release anxiety as long as gaming isn't excessive.
Videos do help teens open up their imagination but also affects the teens negatively if abused. A
regular habit of spending 2 or more hours every day playing video games can lead to attention
issues at school and poor academic performance. Also, violent video games can desensitize teens
to the realities of war and crime. Game ratings for age-appropriate content should be taken
seriously by teens and should be strictly permitted by parents because teens are still developing
cognitive brain-function, which includes the ability to reason and decipher morally sound
behavior.
Many teens prefer to watch television or play on the computer rather than to go outside
for physical recreation activities. This can lead to obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Too much
media at home makes it too easy for teens to default to inactivity. Addiction to watching
television also hinders the teens on developing their social aspects for they mostly spend their
time inside the house watching instead of socializing with other teens. To control the teens, I
computers and video games in children's bedrooms, by turning off the television at designated
times or during dinner, and by spending time with the teens for family bonding.
Some teens addicted to technology and social media are the ones who don’t feel the love
of their parents because it’s either they are busy or their family is broken. If their parents are
nowhere around, they have no one to tell their feelings and these may start their liking to
technology or social media because they are able to express their feelings and emotions. So to
prevent this case, parents must make some time to spend with their children no matter how busy
they are.
Technology will always be in our lives. Technology is good because it connects us with
our family, with our friends, and with other people but we must not let these technologies to
cause us problems.
