A Written Report prepared by

BSE-English II-1

I. Overview
A love caged by society is one thing, yet a love caged within oneself is another.
The story depicts the struggles of a heterosexual man discovering his identity as he
emotionally bonds with a homosexual man, and vice versa. It showcases the general
stigma the Filipino society has on the LGBTQ community, and how it affects the members’
personal relationships.

II. Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
• Identify and explain the literary elements in the short story
• Describe the LGBTQ community’s landscape in Filipino society
• Develop social awareness in relating the themes of the short story to the
values of Filipino social construct

III. Content
SUMMARY
The story opens with Benjie’s confession of love towards Mike, to which Mike
refuses to show any response -not that he is disgusted, but because he is unsure. The
narrative then shifts to two years since the confession happened as Benjie retells how he
and Mike were acquainted. It was during a Media party where they were both invited, then
the pair were rejoined once again in Zambales for a project that they were both part of.
Since then, the pair started to become good friends as they got to know each other well.
Benjie, being an out-of-the-closet gay, has locked his heart from love as he had
experienced to be taken advantage of and to be cheated on so he promised himself that
he will no longer fall for a person unless it is a genuine connection. Mike on the other
hand is introduced as a heterosexual man who has immersed himself in work to avoid
showing any forms of attachment, not only to his friends but also to his ex-girlfriend, Carmi
whom he admits he misses every time they meet. As Benjie and Mike came to know each
other, their relationship moves from casual to more intimate as they began to break their
walls whenever they are together -they share their free time together, share food, share
the fun, and even in each other’s lowest points in life, Mike was there for Benjie, and so
was Benjie for Mike.
Moving to present time, Benjie once again admits however this time, only to himself
that he has indeed fallen in love with Mike; while Mike is unsure of his sexuality but is
beginning to acknowledge the growing feeling he has for his dear friend Benjie.
The story closes with the two characters’ points of view with both seeming to have
the same plan to ask if they would like to share an apartment and see where the
relationship goes. However, the story does not explicitly state that the pair indeed lived
together.

ANALYSIS
a. Story Structure
The story is narrated in shifting points of view, though not labeled, it is as if a voice
shift can be heard as it is read because of how the author shifts in word choice to build
the identity of the characters in the text. The POVs are shifted by diction, making it easy
for the readers to identify who is talking.
In terms of the use of literary devices, it doesn’t really appeal to sensory causing the
events to not have a specifically described setting (other than the mentioned places such
as Mt. Pinatubo, Zambales, Baguio), but the author brings the readers’ attention into the
train of thought of the main characters, which he carefully writes in detail creating a
dramatic irony. It also makes use of en media res as the story begins at the climax,
then makes use of flashback to how they met until the events resume where the en
media res left off.
The story has an open ending; it does not specifically narrate how the story ends, but
it is implying the possibility of a happy ending. However, the readers would not know for
sure if the pair indeed ended up sharing the apartment, giving room for discussion.
b. Themes
The story breaks Filipino stereotypes on sexuality, specifically on heterosexual
men and homosexual men. It shows that these two are not extremes. To Illustrate, Mike
was portrayed as a muscular guy but appears to be a soft, and very emotional on the
other hand, Benjie is openly gay, but is an emotionally resilient person.
Filipinos have stigma against LGBTQ members that they do not have morals as
they defy what is supposedly natural, but the story portrays Benjie to have a kind heart
despite the strong facade especially in the part when he was deeply annoyed at the lady
politician.
In general, the literary piece brings the readers into the minds of two different
gender orientations: what a heterosexual man thinks of a homosexual man, and what a
homosexual man thinks of heterosexual men and women bringing light to the struggles
that members of the community such as fear of judgment from society, fear of the
unknown as they discover their gender identities, and just like any person in the society,
fear of losing someone dear to them; these are the issues presented in the story that
keeps members of LGBTQ community closeted in the Filipino society.
