“Let me start it. So I have here a (one of the students will answer)
sun, which is one of the symbols
used in the story, particularly in the
title of the story. What do you think
this sun symbolizes for in the story I
have told you a while ago?”

“Great! It’s true that the sun “Yes, Ma’am!”

symbolizes symbol of hope, life, of a
better future and prosperity.Do you
agree class?“

understanding, let me discuss to you
the analysis of the story.

of the story that I have read for you

story)
(students will listen carefully and

The story is of a man condemned to

former girlfriend. The story talks story depicts the final living moments
about the hidden corrupt deals that of a Nigerian prisoner, Bana, and his

“next, can you identify the

symbolisms used in the story
together with its meaning? (one of the students will raise his/her
hand and answer)

“Yes, you! The student at the back.”

“One of the symbolisms that I

title of the story which is Africa Kills
Her Sun, because the Africa through
corruption kills any light that might
spread across the continent.“

“Perfect! Thanks for that very deep

and comprehensive idea! What else?”
“ Ma’am, can I answer?”

“Yes you, student over there!”

“Another symbolism is the fact where

bana being in prison and confined
within small space, Ma’am. It suggest
that he never had the opportunity to
grow due to the widespread
corruption that existed. He is to be
punished for going against the grain
after refusing to accept a bribe.

sharing your thoughts! I feel flattered
because all of you are really paying
attention to the lesson.”

“Now, to feed up your mind, i’ll give

you another symbolism, which I think
you all need to know. Bana as used
by the author to express his views
and feelings on society, is one of the
significant symbolisms used in the
poem.

“Bana symbolizes as an eye for

enlightenment. He illustrate the
gravity of corruption in society, as
well as the death of Ken Saro Wiwa,
sex years later at the cruel, brutal,
and unscrupulous hands of Nigeria‘s
military regime.”

characters in the story were Bana,
Sazan, Jimba and Zole and the other
characters were the High court
judge, the prison guard and the
german prostitute.”

the characters in the story, can you (students will raise their hands“
now identify the four themes of the
story?”

row.” and bravery, and most especially
love.”
