NARRATIVE REPORT

BRIGADA PAGBASA VOLUNTEERS' ORIENTATION

The Participants on the said Volunteers' Orientation arrived at the venue at around 7:40
am.
The Orientation started at exactly 8:05 am with an Invocation, Singing of the Philippine National
Anthem and City Hymn thru an AVP presentation. It was followed by the Presentation of the
Participants, composed of Graduating Teacher Education students, Teacher Applicants, LPTs,
Brigada Eskwela and Brigada Pagbasa Coordinators. And an Opening Remark was given by Sir
Edwin T. Parado, our School Principal.

At around 8:20 am the facilitator started the discussion overview of the Regional
mandates of the Brigada Pagbasa 2021 to the participants. It was discussed that through Brigada
Pagbasa we are supporting the nationwide reading movement for Filipino children which is an
urgent action of Deped as a Learning Continuity Plan at this time of pandemic. It was also
emphasized that the main concern of this activity is to improve the literacy level of the learners;
increase the number of community volunteers who will join the Brigada Pagbasa Movement and to
increase awareness and understanding of the importance of literacy as foundation to learning. On
the other hand, it will also help us – teachers to gain knowledge and positive mindset which are
necessary in this new teaching and learning way. The Roles of Volunteers, Schedules and the
Venue for the Reading Sessions were also discussed. The Assessment Tool to be used is the
FLAT (Functional Literacy Assessment Tool), which was provided by the World Vision. The
volunteers who attended the Orientation shared their learnings about the used and benefits of the
said tool. List of Struggling Learners were given by the advisers.

The participants listened attentively and took down notes on the important points about
the Brigada Pagbasa Program. We allotted 15 minutes for a quick conversation focusing on the
needs of the struggling and non-readers of Cabacao Elementary School. A question and answer
activity was done for a better grasp of the said Orientation and so that the Volunteers were fully
informed and clearly oriented on how to conduct the Program. With the help and guidance of our
dedicated Reading Coordinators, we were able to know and answer all the questions. The meeting
was adjourned at around 10:15 am. We ended the activity with new learnings which will help us
improve and develop our teaching strategies and methods in this so-called new normal.
