NURSING TRAINING AND STAFF DEVELOPEMTN

Executive Administration of Nursing Affairs

welcomes you to
ULTRASOUND-GUIDED PERIPHERAL
INTRAVENOUS CANNULATION (UGPIVC)
PROGRAM

Sponsored by

WELCOME ADRESS

Dear Candidates, welcome to the Ultrasound-guided Peripheral

Intravenous Cannulation (UGPIVC) Program.

Peripheral venous cannulation is essential to provide care for the

patients in the emergency department or critical care unit. While most
intravenous catheters are placed using the conventional technique, up
to one-third of the patients have difficult intravenous access (DIVA).

Our vision is geared to delivering quality simulation-based training

workshops that is aimed for staff clinical skills enhancement and patient
safety. The Clinical Simulation Administration is pleased to present an
exemplary scientific program to prepare nurses with the essential skills
and knowledge in dealing with difficult intravenous access using the
Ultrasonography.

Again, welcome to you all and may you have an enjoyable learning
experience.

Dr. Sara Al-johani

Program Director, UGPIVC
Executive Director, Clinical Simulation Administration
Collaboratively designed with experts from the medical and
nursing streams, the aim of the UGPIVC is to strengthen KAMC Nurses’
cannulation skills with the theoretical and practical knowledge in
order to safely and effectively manage patients with difficult
intravenous access guided by Ultrasound.

Specifically, upon completion of workshop, nurses will be able

to:

A. Cognitive Aspect
1. Discuss the infection prevention and control practices
when performing UGIVC.
2. Describe the anatomy, physiology, and landmarks of
commonly used veins.
3. Identify the indications and contradictions for UGPIVC.
4. Describe the principles of the ultrasound technology
including ultrasound probe selection.
5. Identify the possible complications related to UGPIVC.
6. Describe the aftercare of the intravenous catheter including
securing/stabilization of the device.
7. Identify the role of the nurse with ultrasound training in
supporting other staff gaining traditional IV placement
experience

B. Psychomotor Aspect
1. Prepare the probe, equipment, environment, and patient.
2. Select the appropriate insertion site and catheter size and
length.
3. Demonstrate appropriate techniques for cannulating a vessel
guided by ultrasound
4. Confirm location of intravenous catheter in the vein.
Essential requirements for the successful completion of the program:

1. Attend the Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous

Cannulation (UGPIVC) Workshop.
 There is a mandatory post-test after the theoretical session. You
are required to obtain a passing mark on this before proceeding to
the group practical session.

2. Complete simulation-based hands-on training on blue phantom

(gel model) with two successful IV cannulation in the presence
of the designated mentor/facilitator.
 The practical session of the workshop will allow you scan and
practice cannulation on phantoms.
 Candidates are required to perform two successful IV cannulation
in the presence of the designated mentor/facilitator.

3. Complete five successful IV cannulation insertion on patients

guided by Ultrasound with the supervision and mentorship of
the designated mentor /facilitator.
 Five (5) live cases requirement must be completed within 1-month
duration from the date of the conduction of the workshop.
 Candidates shall contact the Mentor/Facilitator once they are
ready to perform the IV Cannulation on a patient guided by
Ultrasound.
 Facilitator/Mentor will visit the candidate on their respective area
to supervise and evaluate the performance of the candidate
during the procedure.
 The Competency Checklist will be utilized for an objective
evaluation of the procedural performance.
